Joseph Workman

Christian Advocate, Thursday October 2, 1879

Joseph Workman was born January 9th,1791 and died Aug. 17th, 1879. Father Workman was one of the first settlers on the Guyandotte River and of Boone County, W.Va. Served two terms in the U.S. Army in the war of 1812. Was married to Elizabeth Elkins in 1821, and commenced housekeeping on Pond Fork, Logan (now Boone) Co., where he died. He raised a family of ten children, all living. Two of his sons are Methodist preachers. His son, Rev. Andrew Workman, is known to this country in all the churches for his fidelity to the M.E. Church, and his unfliching loyalty to the United States Government during the late civil war. His son. Hon. William Workman, is a pillar in our church, and maintained his allegiance to it and the Government in the midst of great danger and at a great personal sacrifice. Father Workman united with the M.E. Church in the year 1804, and soon afterward made a profession of religion. His house was among the first in the country opened to our ministry. His wife also united with our Church at the early age of nine years. His life was a well-written comment on the practice of our holy religion and in the faith of its devine reality, he passed away to the spirit land.
