The Wiley family is an old English one. The Wiley family of the United States to be considered here is descended from William Wiley (born about 1765 in England), who married Ann Potts 1796 in Stockton-on-Lees, Durham County, England, daughter of John Potts and Lillie ? It is their son, James Wiley who came to America in 1831.
James Wiley, who married Elizabeth "Bessie" Barker, came with their children, from Stockton-on-Lees, England, to America in 1831. James and Bessie were the parents of eight children, four sons and four daughters. It is the second son, Thomas Wiley, whose line we are descended from.
Thomas Wiley, born August 8, 1824 in Stockton-On-Lees, Durham Co., England, married on May 10, 1849, Emily Taylor, daughter of Richard Taylor and Martha Blackburn, in Elizabeth, Allegany County, Pennsylvania. Emily was born June 23, 1822 in Pennsylvania. Thomas died June 10, 1888 in Elizabeth, Allegany Co., Pennsylvania and Emily died September 21, 1907 also in Elizabeth. Both are buried in the Elizabeth Cemetery, Elizabeth, Pennsylvania.
Thomas and Emily became the parents of six children: Martha Elizabeth, Emma Devinney, Anne Clare, Richard Taylor, Charles Shaffer, and James Thomas Wiley. The last child named died in infancy, but the others all grew to maturity, and all of these married and became parents, with the exception of Emma Devinney Wiley, who died single. It is Anne Clare Wiley that continues our files.
Anne Clare Wiley was born February 16, 1854 in Elizabeth, Allegany County, Pennsylvania. She died about 1935 in Hollywood, Los Angeles County, California. She married (1) Thomas Espy Stevenson Griffin , son of Edward Burns Griffin and Narcissa Stevenson. in 1879, Kittanning, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania and (2) Louis Walker sometime after 1900.
Ann and Thomas had two sons:
Frank Wiley Griffin, born November 13, 1878 in Johnstown, Cambria County, Pennsylvania, married Nellie Mae Gardner, in Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., California in 1903. This couple had two daughters, Emily and Dorothy.
Edward Burns "Eddie" Griffin, born about 1880 in Johnstown, Cambria County, Pennsylvania, married Bonita "Bonnie" Darr. This couple had no children.
