Maryland  -  Pennsylvania

Richard Taylor, son of William Taylor, was born October 15, 1792 in Denton, Caroline County, the Eastern Shore district of Maryland.  He married four times, his third wife was, Ann Marie Purcell, and his fourth was, Martha Blackburn, daughter of Zachariah Blackburn and Mary Bracken, she was born March 10, 1795 in Pine Township, Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania.

"Richard Taylor fought in the War of 1812 in General Zebulon Pike's command and participated in the Battle in which General Pike lost his life.  Richard was taken prisoner soon after this battle and was held for twenty-two months successively in Montreal, Quebec and Halifax, suffering from lack of food, water, and decent living quarters.  He used to tell of having to shut his eyes so that he would not see worms in the bread that he had to eat.  He had made a number of attempts to escape, and on one occasion was within a short distance of the American lines when recaptured and taken back.  He was released by exchange of prisoners at Boston at the end of the war and sent back to his Maryland home.  Richard Taylor's two sons fought in the Civil War."  {Note: Charles Elliot Taylor, son from Richard's second marriage and Joseph Stephens Taylor, son from Richard's third marriage were the sons who fought in the Civil War}  * from Autobiography of R. T. Wiley by Richard Taylor Wiley--1941.

Also written by Mr. Wiley in 1941:  "Not much as been learned of Richard Taylor's ancestors, but he came of a well known family, many members of which have attained prominence. The most notable member of the family from which he sprang was General Zachary Taylor, here of the Mexican War, who became President of the United States. Richard talked with him on one occasion when he was in Pittsburgh and they reached the conclusion that they were second cousins." {Note from Richard Taylor Wiley Report 1946: It seems as though Richard Taylor's grandfather and Zachary Taylor's father were brothers. This made Richard and Zachary Taylor 2nd cousins. Zachary Taylor's daughter married Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederacy.}

Richard and his fourth wife, Martha Blackburn, had one son and four daughters.  Emily Taylor, born 1822 in Pennsylvania married Thomas Wiley on May 10, 1849, in Elizabeth, Allegany, Pennsylvania. Thomas born in England came to the US with his parents in 1831.
