1.     John Everett COPE was born 1846 in Pike County, Al. He died 1 Nov 1919 in Fort Stockton, Tx and was buried 1919 in East Hill Cemetery Fort Stockton, Tx.

BIOGRAPHY: John Everett Cope was eldest son of George Washington Cope and was the beginning of my Cope line. John was born in Pikes Co. Alabama 1846 and died 1919 in Fort Stockton, Texas. He was a rancher and a businessman in Pecos County. At one time J.E. COPE owned a section of land in east Fort Stockton known as the Cope Estate. He had an interest in two ranches and a gold mine in Mexico. He Married Lucretia J. Ray of Fannin County, Texas about 1868 and had 9 children.

 

BURIAL: John's burial place is unknown but I assume that he was buried in Fort Stockton's East Hill Cemetery and probably in the old Valentine Plot however unmarked.

John married Lucretia J. RAY, daughter of James Wilson RAY and Mary GIBSON, on 1868 in Fannin County, Texas. Lucretia was born 1850 in Fannin Co., Tx. She died about 1926 in Austin, Tx and was buried 1926 in East Hill Cemetery Fort Stockton, Tx.

BIOGRAPHY: Lucretia J. Ray was the daughter of a wealthy lay preacher James Wilson Ray from Fannin County, Tx where he is buried in Coonrod Cemetery. Family records indicate that Lucretia owned a section of land in Sterling County.

BIOGRAPHY: William Edgar Cope was born in Sterling City, Tx 1886. He married Mary Isabelle Backus of Corpus Christi, Texas in 1912. They had one son John Edgar Cope.

William (Willie) was a Pecos County Deputy for about 30 years in Fort Stockton, Texas and died 1971. He is buried at East Hill Cemetery in Fort Stockton, Tx. There is also evidence that he was, at one time, a Texas Ranger

 

Willie married Mary Isabelle BACKUS "Murry", daughter of Author BACKUS and HENRIETTA SOMEBODY "Hattie", on 5 May 1912 in Pecos County, Texas. Murry was born Dec 1895 in Gainesville, Tx. She died 3 Oct 1964 in Fort Stockton, Tx and was buried in San Angelo, Tx.

They had the following children:

              11    M         i.    John Edgar Cope was born 1914 in Corpus Christi. He died 1994 in Fort Stockton, Tx and was buried in East Hill Cemetery Fort Stockton, Tx.

BIOGRAPHY: John Edgar Cope was born 1914 in Corpus Christi, Tx. He is listed in the 1920 Census of Pecos County. John married Emma Elizabeth Yockey in 1939. Born to this union were three children, two girls and one boy. John lived most of his life if Fort Stockton, Texas where he died in 1994.

3.     Madison Earl COPE "Matt" (John Everett) was born 7 Aug 1869 in Fannin Co., Tx. He died 1 Oct 1901 in Fort Stockton, Tx and was buried in Old Fort Cemetery.

DEATH: Matt, also known as M.E. Cope is buried in the Old Fort Cemetery in Fort Stockton. He was drug to death by his horse in Oct 1, 1901. His tombstone reads 1902, however death records indicate 1901.

BIOGRAPHY: Madison was married Oct 1896 to Matilda Brown (per Sterling early marriage records). His Mother bought a ranch in Fort Stockton, Tx as  a wedding gift.

Matt was killed on his anniversary 1901 on this ranch and ranch was traded to Bud Price for a ranch in Sterling County and willed to Madison's heirs being Thomas Everette, Matterson Earl, and Ernestine.

              13    M        ii.    Thomas Everett COPE "Peb" was born 16 Nov 1899 in Fort Stockton, Tx. He died 3 Mar 1984 in Sterling City, Tx and was buried in Foster Cemetery Sterling City.

BIOGRAPHY: Thomas Everett Cope (Peb) was born about 1899 in Fort Stockton, Texas. He was the son of Madison Earl Cope and Matilda Brown. After the death of his Father, Peb moved to Sterling County and lived the remainder of his life there as a rancher. He died in 1986 in Water Valley, Texas near Sterling City.

Peb's Mother married a man named Lantham in Sterling Co. This man raised Ernestine, Peb and Earl and had three other sons of his own.

Matterson married Lucy Gracey SANDERS on 16 Jun 1925 in San Angelo, Tx. Lucy was born 27 Jan 1907 in Hereford, Tx. She died 1 Apr 1989 in Georgetown, Tx.

4.     Thomas J. COPE (John Everett) was born 1871. He died 22 Nov 1932 in Rankin, Tx and was buried in Fort Stockton (Unmarked Grave).

DEATH: Tom died in McCamey Texas in 1932 and is buried in the "Old Valentine Plot" which is in Fort Stockton's East Hill Cemetery. His grave is unmarked as of this date.

BIOGRAPHY: Tom Cope was born 1871 probably in Fannin County, Texas. He married Maggie Valentine of Fort Stockton. Maggie died in 1918 and Tom married a Mary Landers. Tom and Maggie had four children, 1 girl and three boys.

Tom Cope was a rancher, large land owner and Commissioner of Pecos County, Texas for about 15 years and died at age 62 in McCamey, Texas in 1932.

 

Thomas married (1) Maggie Valentine daughter of John Sr. VALENTINE and Margaret WILCOX, on 29 Nov 1905 in Pecos County, Texas. Maggie was born Jun 1883. She died 20 Feb 1918 in Fort Stockton, Tx and was buried in East Hill Cemetery Fort Stockton, Tx.

Willard Cope was killed in WWII and death is recorded in McCamey, Tx Not sure where he is buried.

 

BIOGRAPHY: Willard Filmare Cope was the Son of Tom and Maggie Cope, born about 1916 and was killed in WWII in 1944.

BIRTH: Jessie O. Cope was born same year his Mother Maggie died could have bee cause of death.

Sallie married Robert L. GRAY on 1 Oct 1896 in Sterling City, Tx. Robert was born Aug 1876 in Ark.
