DeMone Elburn GuyBorn in First South, Lunenburg Co., N.S., in 1900, he was one of six sons of Gabriel and Nettie DeMone.
He worked as a moulder at the Foundry until the age of 16, when he went to sea with his father aboard the J.B. Young. The skipper was Albert Himmelman. Later he went with Captain Freeman Corkum as mate on the Uda R. Corkum.
In 1928 he married Beatrice Beck and they had two children, Merilyn and Loran. After his marriage he sailed with his father-in-law, Abbot Beck, aboard the Beatrice Beck; and later became her master. This boathad no engine, all sails (these were called dummy vessels). All saltfishing was carried out with dories.
His next boat was built in 1930 and named after the prime minister ofCanada, R.B. Bennett. This boat had engines and did fresh fishing. The master was Captain Albert Selig and after his death, Elburn became her skipper. He had four years of good fishing aboard this boat.
In the fall of 1940 at the Smith and Rhuland shipyard the Merilyn Claire, christened for his only daughter, was launched. He claimed shares in this boat and sailed her until 1945. During the war, the fish food supply had to be maintained, and the vessels often ran into allied convoys. My dad was aboard the Cape LaHave at th is time. The Cape LaHave was skippered by Capt. DeMone until 1951.
The Cape North, a sister ship to the Cape LaHave is now part of the Lunenburg Fisheries Museum. These two sister ships were highliners. Themost successful fish draggers out of Lunenburg at that time.
National Sea Products now wanted to try out steamboats, so Capt. DeMone took out the Cape Sambro from Lunenburg, then later from Halifax. He was not very happy with this venture.
In 1953, National Sea brought several smaller draggers from the States. One of these was the Cape Alert. In the operation of this boat there were more difficulties encountered. Capt. DeMone did not like the boat because it was small. Even with this drawback he still made a success of this venture.
It was on April 9, 1956 aboard this boat that Capt. DeMone suffered afatal heart attack.
Capt. DeMone was very proud of his accomplishments and never complained of the hardship. He was extremely well liked by everyone. He had away with the men and enjoyed jokes and was always ready to play jokesand had a great sense of humor. There were many who fished with him for years. He was firm, but not harsh or unkind. One particular fisherman, Everett Crouse, sailed with him for years on five or more different boats.
While ashore, his chief pleasure was driving his car and taking his family on trips. He was a devoted member of Zion's Lutheran Church, the pastor, Rev. L.G. Bald, was a very close friend, and on two trips he sailed to sea with Elburn.
At the time of his death, the whole town mourned and people filled the church to pay tribute at his funeral. The pastor was moved to tearsas he spoke of him. In 1946 an artist by the name of Turner made a courtesy trip on the Cape LaHave and while there made a charcoal sketch of Capt. DeMone in his oilskins. The original sketch along with photos of all the boats he was skipper of can be seen on the Cape North atthe Lunenburg Fisheries Museum.
SKIPPY.
At one time a huge Labrador retriever became quite attached to Capt. DeMone and went to sea with him. While in port Skippy paid calls to various parts of the town but was usually on hand in time to sail. On one occasion he failed to appear so Capt. DeMone blew the horn to signal their departure. The boat had already left the dock when Skippy came full tilt over the wharf, knocking down a man and plunged into the harbour. He was quickly rescued by Capt. DeMone and the voyage continued.
Story by his daughter, Merilyn.
