At the time of Joseph Cunningham’s death in 1850, he is said to be the richest man in South Carolina, his estate at his death being valued at over one million dollars-all made from the ground, because he was a farmer. He left his South Carolina home to William Curry Cunningham, son of his brother Robert. The house was sold after the death of John C. Cunningham in 1892 to Governor Richards.
