September 1899

Friday, September 1 – A little cloudy this morning, hope we shall have some rain.  Juba at home in shop.  Some one brot the mail. I had a letter from Minnie, She is enjoying the last of her vacation in Saratoga, says the city is yet full.

 

Saturday, September 2 – We had a fine shower last night & things are looking fresh again.  I sent Minnie a letter that came last night from Aunt Ruby in Canada.  I wrote her also.  At night I was taken sick with summer complaint, had a hard chill.

 

Sunday, September 3 – I am sick in bed.

 

Monday, September 4 – I am no better, the Dr. called tonight.  Rollin commenced going to school today.

 

Tuesday, September 5 – Juba at work in the cemetery.  I am about the same.

 

Wednesday, September 6 – Juba at work on the bridge.  Still sick in bed.  Dr. called again.

 

Thursday, September 7 – Juba digging out the town well.  I am about the same.

 

Friday, September 8 – Juba finished the town well. I am not any better.  Dr. called again.

 

Saturday, September 9 – The Dr. called & I am better tonight.  Louisa & Rollin to Basin Harbor.  Juba to Vergennes this evening.

 

Sunday, September 10 – All at home.  Very pleasant day.  Rollin rode his wheel up to the Corner & attended Sunday school. Dr. Called.  I was better.

 

Monday, September 11 – Very pleasant weather.  Rollin commenced school today.  Mr. Long called to see me.

 

Tuesday, September 12 – Pleasant weather.  I don’t see as I feel any better.  Juba at home. Clara does all the work.

 

Wednesday, September 13 – Very pleasant weather while I have to be here in bed.  Dr. called, said I was gaining.

 

Thursday, September 14 – Very pleasant day.  Juba to Fred Grandey’s this forenoon.  P. M. at home.  Heard that Dr. Sam H. Rogers died this morning of typhoid fever at Botton, N. Y.  His body was brought tonight from the cars in Ver. to his father on the lake.  Dr. did not call today.

 

Friday, September 15 – Very pleasant weather. Juba gone with L. Rogers to the cemetery at the lake.  Dr. called, thought I was gaining.  Dr. is gone to stay a week or so at North Hudson.  I made a mistake on the other page.  The body was brought tonight to his father.

 

Saturday, September 16 – Very nice pleasant day, quite a frost this morning.  Juba to the funeral this forenoon.  P.M. He & Rollin have gone to Ver.  Elder James TenBrocke preached the sermon.  At night Hariet came & very kindly helped me, as she has done the past week.

 

Sunday, September 17 – Another pleasant day. Juba & Clara to the Corners to see her mother.  Hariet came as usual.  I am feeling much better than any day since taken sick.  Louisa came over a few minutes.  Mr. & Mrs. Varney have joined the Baptist church today by baptism. 

 

Monday, September 18 – Another beautiful day.  Juba in shop.  Mary Dayfoot came to see me, staid all day.  Juba carried her home at night. I am having a hard headache tonight, hope I can sleep it off.

 

Tuesday, September 19 – Very pleasant morning, afternoon some cloudy & bids fair to rain, wind came out of the north about three oclock, quite cool with just a sprinkle of rain.  Louisa & Alice Matthews of Rutland called to see me.  Juba to Ver. this morning.  After dinner he went & repaired Mrs. Trasks fence.

 

Wednesday, September 20 – A light rain in the night, very still pleasant day, clouds all passed off. Juba in shop.  Clara is having so much to do I fear she will be sick again.  Louisa is 69 years old today.

 

Thursday, September 21 – A very welcome rain today, wells in t own were nearly all dry & also cisterns.  Juba in shop.  Rollin in school.  Clara doing the work alone.  Heard Mrs. Sam Rogers was quite sick.

 

Friday, September 22 -  Very pleasant morning after such a nice rain.  Juba making wire fence down west, on the road side.  Mr. Long called to see us.  When Juba came in from his work he found Clara real sick & he went over to get Louisa to come & stay awhile.  She came.

 

Saturday, September 23 – A few clouds, but no rain today.  Juba has been at home all day to take care of Clara as she is real sick.  Dr. Ken called on his way home from North Hudson & found me much better & Clara very sick.

 

Sunday, September 24 -  A lite rain last night but today is cloudy & no rain.  Dr. Kent came this morning, says Clara is not better.  Rollin has gone home with Dr.  Is going there to school while his mother is so sick.  Mrs. Kent came down to see Clara.

 

Monday, September 25 – Light showers today.  Clara is no better.  Dr. says she will never be any better, it seems awful sad.  Dr. called again at night.

 

Tuesday, September 26 – Raining this morning.  Dr. came early, said Clara was some easier but thought she could never be any better.  She says she is ready to die & don’t wish to live.

 

Wednesday, September 27 – Clara died in the night about one oclock.  Juba has gone to Vergennes to telegraph to her brother Eric that the funeral will be at the house tomorrow.  Mary Dayfoot came down & staid with us over night.  Oh what a sad thing to thus pass out of existence.

 

Thursday, September 28 -  Eric & his wife came this morning. Juba brot down Mrs. Trask.  The services commenced at 1 oclock.  Elder Dayfoot & Mr. Long officiated.  At night Juba took Eric to the train.

 

Friday, September 29 – A very pleasant day.  Juba has gone to carry Mary home & bring back Eric’s wife.  She staid till night & Juba & Rollin went to the Corners with her.  She intends to stay a week or so & take Mrs. Trask home with her.

 

Saturday, September 30 – A good shower last night & it look likely to be more showery today.  35 years & two months today since our dear son John Rollin was slain in battle in Petersburg, VA.  Juba to Ver. to buy a trunk to pack goods in for Eric’s wife.
