August 1899

Tuesday, August 1 – A bright lovely morning.  Juba at work forenoon for George Allen. Afternoon all worked here, finish haying there & here.  Clara came down to dinner.  Louisa has done the ironing.  Mr. Long called to see Clara.  Rollin up to see them play ball.

 

Wednesday, August 2 – Very nice day.  Juba at home.  At noon Joe sent for him to fix the reaper, returned shortly.  Rollin over to Charlie Torrey’s to go fishing with him.  Louisa was invited out to dinner, so Juba & I ate alone.  Clara did not come down.

 

Thursday, August 3 – Very pleasant, needs rain again.  Juba at home.  Clara did not come down.

 

Friday, August 4 – Very clear & very hot. Juba helping Grant Allen put up his oats in the field.  Jesse is 53 years old today.  How I would like to see him, but never will as he is in the soldiers home in Maine.  I rec’d a letter from Sadie & Minnie.

 

Saturday, August 5 - Very clear & hot as ever. Juba at home.  Rollin went over to Mr. Torrey’s t go fishing with him, but he could not go till Monday.  P. M. Juba getting his horse shod & Rollin up to see them play ball. Clara came down before dinner, is now outdoors, then went up to see her mother.  Just at night.  Eric walked in surprising us.  I rec’d a letter from Sadie tonight saying she should start tonight for Vt.

 

Sunday, August 6 – Very clear & pleasant though very dry.  Eric, Clara & Rollin have gone to the Corners.

 

Monday, August 7 – Still very pleasant & dry, no signs of rain.  Eric has tried hard to have Clara go home with him. Thought it would benefit her best of anything, but she thought not.  Juba took him to Vergennes this forenoon.  Rollin went with them.  They returned at l oclock.  This afternoon Juba has gone after Sadie.  They came about 9 oclock.  She makes a short stay, only two weeks.  I was so glad to see her.  Louisa here helping me.

 

Tuesday, August 8 – Very pleasant & dry.  Juba at home.  Clara seems better.  She rode up to see her mother this afternoon.  Sadie & Rollin over to the lake fishing, came home without any fish, wind was too strong to go out in a boat.  I sent a letter to Minnie.  Mr. Long called.

 

Wednesday, August 9 – Another very dry day.  Juba helping George Allen thresh grain.  Came home at nine & got Norman Warren to work in his place.  Mr. Abell fixed Juba’s wagon. Clara came down & staid all day, is not very strong yet.  Hariet came over & took Sadie to Vergennes with her.

 

Thursday, August 10 – Cloudy and bids fair to rain, very cool for the time of year.  A very little rain fell, just enough to lay the dust.  Juba at home.  Clara gaining slowly.

 

Friday, August 11 - Very pleasant nice day.  Juba to Ver. Depot to get some goods he sent for.  Sadie & Rollin to the lake fishing, caught five pickerel (?) & 4 perch.  Clara some better.

 

Saturday, August 12 – Very nice pleasant day.  Juba at home.  P. M. Sadie & Rollin went to Vergennes.  I had a letter from Minnie saying she was coming next Monday.  Clara is better.

 

Sunday, August 13 – Very pleasant day, toward night wind came from the north, cool as fall of the year.  Sadie & I went down to see Mrs. Lyman. She is quite feeble.  Clara has not been down today.

 

Monday, August 14 – Clear & cool, very dry, needs rain very much.  Juba at home.  Stella & Net called to see Sadie.  Juba, Rollin & Sadie have gone to Vergennes to meet Minnie & bring her trunk down.  She & Sadie will stay with Susie & Helen Smith tonight.  Louisa helping me.

 

Tuesday, August 15 -  Very nice day.  Minnie did not come last night.  Telegram said she would come today. Sadie staid & Juba is going after her tonight.  Minnie came on the six oclock train & will stay with the Miss Smiths tonight.  Sadie came home with Juba.  Elder & Mary came to see Sadie.  They will stay over night.  Juba & Sadie returned at 10 oclock.

 

Wednesday, August 16 – Another very nice day.  The neighbors made a picnic on the lake shore that Sadie might meet them all together.  All enjoyed the bountiful dinner & some the boat ride.  Hariet went to Ver. to bring Minnie down & they arrived just in time for dinner.  All seemed pleased to see her.  Juba doing George Allen’s chores.  He & Grant over the lake after blackberries.

 

Thursday, August 17 -  Very pleasant day, wind south, very hot middle of the day.  Sadie & I went to Vergennes, called on Mrs. Parker, Sister Mary & Mrs. Barnes.  Bought me a bonnet.  Juba at home.  Clara is so as to be about the house.  Minnie stays over with Hariet & calls here occasionally.  Hariet very kindly asked her to stay with her.  10 years since Jefferson died.

 

Friday, August 18 – Very clear & pleasant all day.  Juba at home in shop.  Minnie & Edith called in the forenoon.  Afternoon Sadie & I called there, staid till after tea.  Rollin has gone to get the mail, rode his bicyle.

 

Saturday, August 19 – Still very hot & dry.  Juba & Rollin gone with Sadie to the Depot. She has started for St. Lois.  She is a noble brave girl. I wish I was able to live with her the rest of my day.

 

Sunday, August 20 – No rain yet, very dry, therm. 95.  Minnie came over.  She is staying with Hariet for a few weeks.  I suppose Sadie is near Detroit & perhaps passed there.

 

Monday, August 21 – Just as hot & dry as ever.  Juba in shop.  Louisa & I washing.  Clara is better.  Hope Sadie reached St. Louis this morning, all safe.

 

Tuesday, August 22 – A little rain last night, some thunder.  Juba to Vergennes with Mr. Adams. Louisa has done the ironing.  Minnie came & I went over to Hariet’s & staid to supper.  Minnie came home with me.

 

Wednesday, August 23 -  Very pleasant day. Juba in shop.  Minnie came over & staid till Hariet came to take a ride with her.  Juba & Clara to the Corners.  I had a letter from Sadie.  She had a good & short journey home, felt perfectly well and went right to the Office.

 

Thursday, August 24 – Very pleasant morning, had a nice shower in the night. Juba gone to meet Selectman at the south bridge.  Came back & went to Vergennes with Will Curlen, returned before dark.  Hariet & Minnie came over.  Mr. Long called.  I sent a letter to Sadie.

 

Friday, August 25 – Very pleasant day.  Minnie came over & staid till almost noon & went back.  She & Hariet came over & took tea.  Mrs. Allen came to the ball play & staid her to tea.  Juba to the shop painting Mr. Fisk’s wagon.

 

Saturday, August 26 – Very nice pleasant day.  Minnie came over & I went over there with her.  Juba, Clara & Rollin up to the Corners.

 

Sunday, August 27 – Very nice & pleasant.  All at home.  Minnie came over & staid to dinner.

 

Monday, August 28 – Very pleasant day, no rain for many days.  I finished washing at eleven.  Juba over helping cut & take out the weeds from the Cemetery at the lake.  Afternoon in the shop.  Hariet & Minnie gone to ride on the lake street & to the Corners & will bring the mail.

 

Tuesday, August 29 – Still very pleasant, only very hot & dry.  Juba at work on school house on Sand Road.  Minnie came over, says she starts for Saratoga tomorrow. Hariet has gone to Fort Cassan on business concerning the church.

 

Wednesday, August 30 – Still very hot & dry, not a cloud to be seen.  Minnie has gone to Saratoga.  Hariet carries her to Port Henry.  Juba, Clara & Rollin have gone with them.  35 years & one month today since our son John Rollin was slain in battle at Petersburg, Va.

 

Thursday, August 31 – Still very hot & dry.  Rec’d letters from Fannie & Sadie, all well, very hot & dry there.  Juba at home in shop finished boat for Mr. Wisesll (?).  I have been sick for two days.  At night Juba went to Vergennes with Herbert Norton.  Clara rode up to her mothers.  Rollin staid with me, busied himself killing millers.  They came in swarms.
