July 1899

Saturday, July 1 – A beautiful bright day.  Clara seems a little better.  Juba & Rollin to Ver. with George Allen.  Mr. Long, the Ministry called to see Clara, thinks she is improving.  Dr. did not come today.  Mrs. Levi Beach here.  Juba took up a tub of butter which makes 7 tubs to this date.

 

Sunday, July 2 – A clear bright day, all things dry as before the rain.  Clara the same as for several days.  I have written to Minnie.  Dr. did not come today, has not been here since Thursday.  Mary (his wife) came toward night, thought Clara was improving.  Elder Dayfoot preached in the Baptist Church to day.

 

Monday, July 3 – An extremely hot day.  Clara is gaining some.  Juba at home.  Louisa here helping me.  I sent a letter to Minnie.  Dr. did not come today.

 

Tuesday, July 4 – A. M.  95 in the porch. P. M.  A refreshing shower, which all were thankful to receive.  Rollin went home with Mr. Fish to go fishing with Mr. Dudley.  A shower came up & they came back.  At night Juba went down after him.  Clara about the same as usual.  Dr. did not come today.

 

Wednesday, July 5 – A beautiful day though very warm.  Clara about the same. Juba at home.  Dr. did not come today.  His wife, Mary, came just at night.  Mr. Long came, thinks Clara has improved.

 

Thursday, July 6 – A very pleasant morning, soon clouds appeared & looked likely to rain, but the shower all seemed at a distance.  Dr. Kent came about noon. Juba at home.  Aunt Louisa & Rollin picked about two quarts of raspberries out here in the woods.

 

Friday, July 7 – Had a nice rain in the night, all nature is dressed in green again, for which we all feel thankful. Clara is gaining some.  Juba at home. Dr. Kent did not come today.

 

Saturday, July 8 – Several light showers during the day.  Clara is gaining.  Juba at home a.m.  P. M. He went to the lake to please Rollin, they caught six or seven fish.  Dr. Kent came this afternoon, which makes 10 calls.  I rec’d a letter from Sadie.

 

Sunday, July 9 – Had a powerful shower last night & have had another today.  Clara is improving slowly.  Dr. did not come today.

 

Monday, July 10 – A beautiful clear day, morning cool, warmer soon.  Louisa here helping me.  Clara better.  Juba to Ver. with George Allen.  I rec’d a letter from Minnie. Juba brot two mowing machines from the Depot.

 

Tuesday, July 11  - A beautiful bright day.  Clara is improving.  Juba is working for George Allen in the hay field. Dr. Kent & his wife came this afternoon.  Juba rode up to the Office with Gelt (?), brot my pension papers.  Louisa has been ironing.

 

Wednesday, July 12 – A bright hay day, people are improving it.  Juba this afternoon over helping George Allen.  Rollin has gone over to go with Gelt to pick raspberries.  Clara is better.  Minnie says she is improving.

 

Thursday, July 13 – A beautiful day, very nice to gather hay.  Juba working for George Allen.  Clara some better. 4 weeks today since Clara went upstairs to bed sick.

 

Friday, July 14 – Another bright beautiful day.  I fear Clara is not very much better.  Juba is cutting the hay on Louisa’s lot.  Rollin is down there with him. Louisa & Rollin picked two quarts of raspberries this forenoon down west in our lot.

 

Saturday, July 15 – This has been a week of splendid weather for haying.  Juba only began his yesterday.  He finished one lot on Louisa’s place.  Clara just the same.  Rollin rode up to the Corners with Mr. Fish to see his Grandma & rode home with the mail carrier.  Helen Adams arrived tonight.  She spent with winter in North Carolina with Dr. Dais (Davis/) family.

 

Sunday, July 16 – A nice rain today which makes things grow splendidly.  Clara just the same. Hariet came & invited me to ride over to the Cemetery with her.  It is a sadly negative place.

 

Monday, July 17 – Some rainy this morning but cleared away, very pleasant.  It was so wet we did not wash.  Clara about the same.  Juba mowing in Louisa’s lot.  Helen is home from North Carolina.  She has been stopping in Worcester a month.  I sent a letter to Minnie.  Louisa helping me.

 

Tuesday, July 18 – A very pleasant day. Juba working in Louisa’s lot.  Clara just the same.  Louisa & I have been out on the platform washing. 

 

Wednesday, July 19 – Very pleasant day.  Juba working down to Louisa’s lot, George Allen helping him.  Clara is better.  Louisa is doing the ironing.  Mr. Long called to see Clara.

 

Thursday, July 20 – A very pleasant day.  Juba has finished haying down at Louisa’s & he & George have mowed all his & drawn in three or four loads.  Clara is better.  Mr. Long called.

 

Friday, July 21 – Raining & thunder shower in the night. Juba’s hay in the north lot is all out in the rain.  He is working in the shop.  Clara came down this noon.  Dr. Kent came down with her, said she must walk around. Mr. Long calls often.

 

Saturday, July 22 – Cloudy a.m.  P. M. very bright & pleasant.  Juba will finish his haying  here at home today. George & Grant are helping this afternoon. Clara did not feel as well this afternoon.  I rec’d a letter from Sadie.

 

Sunday, July 23 – Very pleasant day.  All at home.  Clara did not feel well enough to go see her mother.

 

Monday, July 24 – Morning cloudy, but no rain.  Juba to Ver. with Joe after a reaper.  P. M. worked with his  horses mowing in Hariet’s lot.  Neighbors are having a bee putting up her hay.  Evening Rollin went to the church with Edith & Hariet to an entertainment.  Clara better, came down stairs first time since June 15th.  Louisa here helping me.

 

Tuesday, July 25 – A very nice day for haying.  The people at the bee will finish up the haying today.  Juba came home about 4 oclock & said it was all done.  Clara is better so she rode up to see her mother towards night.  Mr. Long here to see Clara.

 

Wednesday, July 26 – Very warm day, then 90 in the shade.  The agent with the reaper here putting it together.  He went back to Vergennes at night, expects to come again in the morning to start it running.  Clara is better, came down to dinner.  Mr. Long called to see her.

 

Thursday, July 27 – Very pleasant morning, think it will be a warm day.  Juba to Ver. at 4 oclock to bring down the Agent to start the reaper, reached home just before 9  oclock.  He brot his little girl.  They staid till after dinner. Clara down to dinner.

 

Friday, July 28 – Very pleasant & dry.  Juba working for George Allen with team up in Andrew’s lot.  Clara is better.

 

Saturday, July 29 – Very pleasant day.  Joe had the misfortune to break his reaper this morning.  He & Juba to Vergennes to telegraph to Albany for a new piece.

 

Sunday, July 30 – Very bright & clean morning.  35 years, long years ago today our dear son John Rollin was slain in battle before Petersburg, Virginia. Why is it the all wise power has suffered me to live so long since.  I ca ask him as David did, cast me not away from the presence & take not thy Holy Spirit from me Oh Lord; my prayer is to be merciful to my remaining children.

 

Monday, July 31 – Very pleasant day. Juba mowed the last of his grass this forenoon.  Afternoon raked it.  Clara getting better.  MR. Long called to see her.  Louisa finished washing before ten oclock, had mended Juba’s coat.
