Monday, May 1 – A. M. Very pleasant & warm. Eric started for Worcester. Clara has taken him to the
depot. Juba
in shop. Clara returned about 2
oclock. P. M. Had quite a shower with thunder &
lightning. Rollin took off his shoes
& left them at the school house. Came home barefooted which was great fun
for him. I have been washing. Mr. Benedict came with groceries - $1.47.
Tuesday, May 2 – Bright & beautiful this morning. All nature is greatly refreshed by the shower
yesterday, buds are starting out nicely & grass is a bright green. Juba is
plowing the garden. I have finished
ironing. Clara cleaned the pantry in the
wood part. Mrs. Trask is all well of her
cough. Rollin is riding his bicycle
since he came from school. I sent a
letter to Sadie.
Wednesday, May 3 – Cool north wind this morning, people are
passing with fur coats on. Juba has planted some potatoes, but nothing can grow much
in such a cold wind. P. M. Juba went to
Ver. with George Dudley and returned in about 3 hours. I rec’d a letter from Sadie tonight.
Thursday, May 4 – Cold and bright this morning, a light
frost in some places. Juba in shop, sold his
hay in Louisa’s barn to Mr. Booth.
Towards night he went to Ver. with Joe Rogers to get spokes & hub
for Ed’s wagon.
Friday, May 5 – Cool & pleasant, cold enough to need a
fire. Juba
in shop.
Saturday, May 6 – Very pleasant cool morning. We need warm rains very much. Juba working
in garden. Rollin almost sick, is
disappointed because he has ____so much all the week on going to the creek
fishing, as there is no school today.
Finally Juba & Clara have taken the horse & g one to the creek
with him.
Sunday, May 7 – Very clear & pleasant, cool &
dry. All at home. At night Juba,
Clara & Rollin went to the Corner Baptist meeting. P. M. Methodist meeting. I would like much to go could I hear plainer
& it as not so much trouble to get there & back. Mrs. Trask is anxious to get up home.
Monday, May 8 - Still very pleasant today. Juba fixed
the mail wagon & has bone to Sam Rogers A. M. He & Clara went up home with Mrs.
Trask. Clara will stay all night with
her. Mr. Benedict brot some groceries,

Tuesday, May 9 – Cool north wind, no signs of rain yet. Juba
trimming apple trees A. M... P. M. in
shop. I cleaned my bed room, churned
& ironed. Clara came home with the
mail. I rec’d a letter from Minnie. My dear Mother died the 9th of May
1847.
Wednesday, May 10 – Juba in
shop & trimming trees. Warmer some, clear & pleasant. Mrs. Driscoll (?) here cleaning house, took
up parlor carpet, cleaned the room & carpet & put it down. At night Juba & Clara went to the
Corners.
Thursday, May 11 – Cloudy & looks likely to rain. Juba killing
the worms in the orchard. A good show of rain this afternoon. At night Juba & Rollin had a big
bonfire. Heard the mail carrier at Basin Harbor
(Charles Newton) horse took fright & ran, throwing him out, breaking his
arm.
Friday, May 12 – Very pleasant all day, the shower makes
grass start up. The worms are destroying
trees fearfully. Juba
is working hard to save the apple trees.
Clara went up with the mail carrier to see her mother. Mr. Booth’s men pressing the hay Juba sold him in Louisa’s barn.
Saturday, May 13 – A. M. Very pleasant. P. M. A shower. Juba to
Vergennes & came home in the mud.
Rollin went to the bridge with him & caught six bullpouts (?). Clara went to her mother’s, all returned
about ½ past 5. It is now at dark
raining.
Sunday, May 14 - Very clear & pleasant morning, wind
south & cool. P. M. Wind north &
cool. Clara & Rollin have gone to
church. I have written three letters to
send tomorrow.
Monday, May 15 – A beautiful day, cold last night. Juba in shop
till 11 oclock then went down to Louisa where the hay pressers are. Sent a tub of butter to the Express office by
Mr. Fisk to be forwarded to Evie in Worcester,
Mass. Have to the date sold 8 tubs. Groceries today
– 25 cents.
Tuesday, May 16 – Very pleasant morning, cool north wind A.
M. Juba in shop. P. M. To Vergennes to get rims for Charles Goff’s wagon. Clara has gone up to her mothers.
Wednesday, May 17 - A very bright beautiful day. Juba in shop.
Clara at home. Rollin in
school. I have been down to Mrs.
Lyman’s, she looks very feeble. A man
from Bridport drew a load of lumber here.
Thursday, May 18 – A light shower this morning. It has
continued at intervals all day, a cold rain.
Juba in shop A. M. P. M. Met as commissioner on Charles Stagg
estate.
Friday, May 19 – Very light showers during the day &
very cool. A. M. Juba & Clara to the Corners. Rollin rode to school with them. They returned at noon. Juba
in shop. Another load of lumber
came. I rec’d a letter from South Park, Minn. Mr. Fleming little boy was bitten severely by
Mr. Wm. Curlens dog. Minnie is 48 years
old today.
Saturday, May 20 – Cloudy but very little rain yet, too cold
for vegetable to grow. Juba
gone to meet the Selectmen over to Mr. Nelson Richards. I rec’d a letter from Jesse this morning, he
is well.
Sunday, May 21 - Very bright & clear, cold north
wind. Juba,
Clara & Rollin have gone to the Corners, they brot the mail. I rec’d a
letter from Minnie & from Emily in California
saying her brother William passed away the 5th of this month. May

Monday, May 22 – Very fair & pleasant, cool north wind.
Warms are killing trees very fast. Juba is fighting them. Clara has been washing. I have been churning. Nettie & Stella called.
Tuesday, May 23 – Very clear & pleasant, cool north
wind. Juba
in shop part of the time & the rest fighting worms. Selectmen met here this afternoon (Mr.
Hanchet? & Mr. Richards) to finish their taxes. At night Juba,
Clara &Rollin to the Corners. Hariet came over & staid till 9 oclock.
Wednesday, May 24 – Very pleasant all day. A. M. Juba in shop. P. M. Mr. Hanchet here spraying the
trees. The worms are destroying all the
maple & apple trees. Juba does the
cores for Hariet, while Mr. Kingman is gone to Bristol on a visit.
Thursday, May 25 – Some cloudy, rain is very much
needed. Clouds all disappeared without
rain. Juba in s hop. Clara rode with the mail carrier to her
mothers.
Friday, May 26 – Very fair & dry. Juba in
shop. Clara is not very well today. After supper Juba
went to Vergennes, bought a bag of salt & of meal. Hariet came over in the evening.
Saturday, May 27 – Very cloudy but no rain yet, it is very
much needed. Juba in shop. Rollin helping him
paint a wagon. Clara is sick, not able
to set up. Mr. Adams took up a tub of
butter for us, 11 pounds, 15 cents per pound, $1.55.
Sunday, May 28 – Had a nice shower last night. All things look much refreshed by it, bids
fair to have more through the day. All
at home. Clara is no better.
Monday, May 29 – A little more rain last night. It is a beautiful morning. Clara is some better today. Juba
painting wagons. Mr. Benedict brot groceries, 50 cents worth. I sent three letters today to Jesse, Sadie
& Mrs. A. Pritchard, St. Paul,
Minn.
Tuesday, May 30 – A beautiful spring day. It is 34 years & 10 months since our dear
Rollin was killed at Petersburg,
VA. Yes he is among the unknown graves I that rebel
land, but his spirit is with the God who gave it. He feared not death, as he trusted in God.
Wednesday, May 31 – A very pleasant day. The Elder & Mary made us a visit. Was very glad to see them. Juba is
painting wagons. At night he rode to
Vergennes with John Sprague, bought some tomato plants.
