April 1899


Saturday, April – Some warm, bright & nice most of the day.  Juba has taken Mr. Cutter over to Hariets to put up in the loft of the granany (?) for the summer. He & Rollin have taken the large water trough down west to the well.  P. M. Juba is painting a wagon for Arthur Tappen.  I sent a letter to Minnie.  I rec’d a letter from Jesse tonight, also from Sadie.

 

Sunday, April 2 – Cold north wind, soon grew warmer & is thawing, sun is shining & looks very pleasant out.  But it must be muddy roads.  All at home.  The blind preacher has services in the church today.  I would like much to have hard him, but I could not undertake the task to ride up there.  I rec’d a letter from Annie King in Milbank, Dakota, telling the sad news of the death of Mary Conant, William’s wife.  Bert Allen’s wife is much better.

 

Monday, April 3 – Bright pleasant morning, soon the clouds obscured the sun & little flurrys of snow came during the day. Juba has gone to help Elbert.  Asked the Dr. to come & see Clara.  He came.  I sent a letter to Sadie & one to Jesse.

 

Tuesday, April 4 – A beautiful sunshiny day, snow is melting fast, roads are very muddy.  Juba is working for Fred Grandey.  Clara says she don’t feel any better.  Juba sold a heifer tonight to Charles Grandey. $25.  Mr. White made out my pension papers.  I have been writing to William Conant of Panama, Mich.

 

Wednesday, April 5 – Very pleasant, some colder, north wind than yesterday.  Juba working in shop.  Mr. Snow that puts up windmills here to dinner.  Louisa came over to see how Clara was.  She is some better, I think.

 

Thursday, April 6 – Another very pleasant day.  A good sap day.  Listers called here. Juba is working for Fred Grandey.  Louisa went back to Edrics.  Rollin gathered quite a pail of sap tonight.

 

Friday, April 7 – Some cloudy this morning, wind south & chilly.  Rec’d a paper from William M. Conant in Panama, Mich., with the notice of the death of his wife.  Juba working for Fred Grandey.  Evening it began to rain.  A calf in the barn.

 

Saturday, April 8 – This morning snow & rain together.  Mrs. Mary Sprague is 45 today so her daughters have gotten up a surprise for her.  We all were invited.  Clara has gone.  The going is so bad I don’t think I care to go. Juba went this afternoon to Vergennes with Mr. Adams.

 

Sunday, April 9 – Cloudy & south wind.  All at home.  Clara did not feel well enough to ride up to the church today.  Mr. Long is expected to preach his last sermon here today. The road are very muddy.

 

Monday, April 10 – A beautiful spring day.  Juba in shop.  Clara feels better.  We finished washing at 10 oclock.  The ice in the lake must be very poor.  I hope no one will venture to cross on it.  Mrs. Trask has a very hard cold.  I sent a letter to Anna King & one to Sadie.  Harvey Beach called.

 

Tuesday, April 11 - Very clear & pleasant, just a few snow banks left.  Juba has gone to Vergennes with Mr. Adams, returned about 4 oclock   Said the going was very hard, mud so deep.  Bought 5 gallon kerosene oil & some groceries for Hariet.

 

Wednesday, April 12 – Cloudy & a light rain. Juba in shop.  Mrs. Trask is having a severe cold & hard cough.  Mrs. Conant & little girl made us a call.  Juba went to the Corners, brot the mail.  I rec’d a letter from Minnie.

 

Thursday, April 13 – Cloudy & south wind, snow nearly gone. Before night, south wind.  Juba in shop.  Mrs. Trasks cold makes her feel quite sick.  Clara is not very well, is better than last week. Juba sold the calf to Mr. Conant for 4 dollars, one week old.  Hariet came over to see Mrs. Trask as she heard she was sick.

 

Friday, April 14 – Very pleasant morning.  The first day I have felt any warm air this spring.  Mrs. Trask is better today.  Clara has been cleaning the pantry. Juba in shop.

 

Saturday, April 15 – A beautiful spring morning. Mrs. Trask says she is better.  Juba is full of work in shop.  Rollin has gone over to George Allen’s.  Juba sold a wagon to Sam Rogers hired man.  Juba & Clara up to Mrs. Trasks house at the Corners.  Clara is 33 years old today. I sent a letter to Jesse.

 

Sunday, April l6 – Very pleasant day, not any snow to be seen out on the mountain.  Juba & Clara & Rollin gone to hear the blind Minister preach.  Mrs. Trasks cough is severe yet, nothing she has taken has much effect.

 

Monday, April 17 - Rather cold north wind.  Bright sunshine makes it look like spring, frost in the ground yet & ice in the lake.  Juba in shop.  Rollin to school, first day.  Mrs. Trasks cough is but a little better.

 

Tuesday, April 18 – A bright beautiful morning, warmer than any day yet, too cold for anything to start growing.  Juba in shop. Mrs. Trask cough is severe yet.

 

Wednesday, April 19 – Very pleasant all day.  Juba up to the Corners working for Elbert Stagg.  Elder Dayfoot & Mary came after they left.  The blind Minister & his wife called.  Juba came home just as the Elder was starting for home.  Mrs. Trasks cough is a little better.

 

Thursday, April 20 – Cloudy this morning, preparing for rain.  Juba, Clara & Rollin to Vergennes to see about the dentist filling Rollins teeth.  They returned at night.  Rollin has 10 teeth filled & three extracted of his first teeth.

 

Friday, April 21 – A very light shower this morning, with a cool north wind.  Juba in shop.  Rollin did not go to school in the forenoon, afternoon went up.  Mrs. Trasks cough hard yet.  I sent a letter to Minnie.

 

Saturday, April 22 – A very pleasant day, some warmer, no rain, too cold for buds to start.  Juba in shop.  Rollin & Henry have gone to the creek fishing.  Have let the coal fire in the parlor go out.  Rollin returned without a fish, much disappointed.

 

Sunday, April 23 – Very pleasant clear day, wind north & cool.  Juba to take Clara & Rollin to church.  40 years today since Sister Jane died – 1854 – Minnie & Eddie’s mother.

 

Monday, April 24 – Very pleasant day.  A. M. Juba painting Arthur Tappens wagon.  P. M. Juba to Vergennes, took a ten pound tub of butter, 14 cents per lb.  Mr. Benedict came this afternoon taking orders for groceries next week.

 

Tuesday, April 25 – Cloudy, but warmer than yesterday, hope it may rain as it is much needed to soften the ground.  Juba in shop.  Clara cleaning house, took out parlor stove.  Mrs. Trasks cough is nearly passed off.

 

Wednesday, April 26 – Very pleasant day. Juba in shop.  Clara went to the Corners this afternoon. 

 

Thursday, April 27 – Very pleasant day, no rain yet.  Juba in shop.

 

Friday, April 28 – Very pleasant day, wind south.  A. M. Juba in shop.  P. M. he has gone to Ver. to bring Eric Trask down.  Mrs. Trask in nearly well of her cough.  Eric came about 5 oclock.  Read in the paper of a terrible cyclone in Missouri & Iowa yesterday.

 

Saturday, April 29 – A beautiful summer day, rain is very much needed. Juba has gone over to Mr. Richards in East Panton.  Eric & Rollin have gone to the north bridge with him to try their luck in catching fish from the bridge.  They had good luck, brot home about 5 ___. I had a letter from Minnie & Jesse tonight.

 

Sunday, April 30 – Another pleasant day, warmest day this spring, no rain yet.  We had a great feast of fish for breakfast.  Eric has gone up street to see his old friends.  34 years & 9 month since dear John Rollin was killed  in battle at Petersburg, Va.
