March 1899


Wednesday, March 1 – March has come in mild & beautiful, not a cloud to be seen.  No sleighing, no snow only in banks.  Juba has gone with Fred Grandey to Port Henry in a wagon on the ice.  Rollin has gone over to George Allen’s to see him tap some trees.  Silas Hoyt has moved to Shelbourne, taken a farm of La Grand B. Cannon.

 

Thursday, March 2 – Cloudy this morning but mild, began snowing before noon & continued till night, is too damp to drift.  Juba in shop.  Has an awful cold. Grant Allen brot our mail after we were all in bed.  I had a letter from Jesse.  He was feeling much better.

 

Friday, March 3 – Warm & thawing, snow will be all gone before night. Juba in shop.

 

Saturday, March 4 – Warm, a little snow fell in the night & has been falling all the forenoon & melted as soon as down.  It seems like last of April weather.  Juba in shop.  Hiram Sprague expects his daughter Ann tonight from Fall River, Mass.

 

Sunday, March 5 – Rained some last night, warm & very cloudy.  At night southwest wind blew the clouds all away.  All at home.  No one from here to church.  The Minister (Mr. Long) is quite sick yet.  Mr. Harris from Monkton went to Addison to preach & I suppose preached here in the afternoon.

 

Monday, March 6 – This morning not a cloud to be seen.  Froze a little last night & now the bright sun is thawing it all out.  Juba in shop.  Made Rollin a wagon.  Anna Burgess, Hiram Sprague’s daughter, came on the train Saturday from Fall River.  Was delayed by snow banks in New Hampshire.

 

Tuesday, March 7 – We have had a week of very pleasant weather, one light snow that melted soon.  This morning a great change, wind northeast & cold, ground frozen hard.  Bids for a storm.  Juba gone with George Allen to Town Meeting in East Panton. Just after they started a strong wind came up & the air was filled with snow all day.  They will have a hard time to get home.  It is the most severe blizzard this season.

 

Wednesday, March 8 - All clear & pleasant this morning. Juba at home in shop.  Rollin chopping wood.  Clara over to Hariet’s helping quilt.

 

Thursday, March 9 – Some colder, ground frozen quite hard. No sleighing.  Cloudy & looks stormy. Juba in shop.  Fertilizer man came to dinner.  I went over to help quilt. They had quite a party.

 

Friday, March 10 – Pleasant, a little snow fell last night.  George Allen has gone to Vergennes on a sleight, to mill & Juba has gone with him.  They returned at 1 oclock.  Said Mr. N. G. Norton died last night.  Clara has gone over to the quilting.  Louisa came over here this afternoon.

 

Saturday, March 11 – Cloudy, no rain or snow yet, thawing fast, plenty of mud.  A. M. Juba in shop.  P. M. to the Corners.  Louisa staid all night.

 

Sunday, March 12 – Very cloudy, think it will rain soon.  All at home & well.  Began to rain about noon, warm spring weather.  Charles Newton came & made us quite along call.  Rained just when he left for home on foot.  Just at dark saw it looked much like a thunder shower.  Heard it thunder two or three times.

 

Monday, March 13 – Morning cloudy, soon the wind came out of the north & the clouds disappeared.  It grew colder so the clothes on the line were frozen. Juba in shop.  Also Rollin, Louisa & I have sat here reading most of the day.  Clara finished her washing about 10 oclock.

 

Tuesday, March 14 – Cloudy but warm & pleasant all day.  No snow only in the banks. No sleighing, only one week this winter & that was poor.  Juba at home.  Louisa went back to Edrics.  Lou Bostwick canvassing for a Chicago Co.  I gave her an order to 75 cts worth of extract.

 

Wednesday, March 15 – Very cloudy, not quite as warm as yesterday, looks likely to snow.  I have been washing.  Clara is ironing.  Juba & Rollin are over to Mr. Staggs where they are having an auction sale.  A real blizzard before night.  A party to Mr. David Brydia (?) tonight.

 

Thursday, March 16 – Bright this morning, quite a little snow on the ground this morning.  The sun will melt it before night.  Towards night the wind came out of the north & it grew cold fast.  Juba in shop making something for Mr. French.  P. M. he helped Mr. Wood ___ a piece of land for Louisa.  I sent a letter to Sadie.

 

Friday, March 17 – Cold this morning but bright sunshine, no sleighing yet.  Juba at home, all well.  Gelty Allen brot the mail.  I had a letter from Minnie.

 

Saturday, March 18 – Snowing lightly, continued till night.  Rollin is some sick this morning, hard cold, acts like the grip. Juba rode to Vergennes with Edric Adams, returned at 5 oclock.  I sent a letter to Minnie.  Juba had a letter from Johnnie, he in the Indian Territory.

 

Sunday, March 19 – Raining this morning.  Rollin sick all night, is having the grip, I think.  All the rest are well as usual. The Minister (Mr. Long) is better, but has not been out yet.  Saturday it snowed all day & today it has rained all day.  Some colder at night & is now snowing fast.

 

Monday, March 20 – Morning still & a good lot of snow on the ground. Before noon the wind came out of the north & the snow is flying all ways, but only the top can fly.  Sleighs are going lively for fear the snow will be gone before night.  Rollin is better though pretty slim yet.  Juba is after h is wood he bought of Mr. Dudley.  Edric drew one load for him.  Vitro (?) got hurt.  Horses & sleigh ran over him.  He is quite lame.  Mr. Fleming two loads, Juba two.

 

Tuesday, March 21 – Very clear & cold, sun is shining so bright the snow will melt some.  Juba has gone to the saw mill with a large log, returned at noon without the lumber.  Hariet sent for me to come over there & stay over night to celebrate my 81 anniversary.  Hariet had on a quilt.  Louisa Converse came over & we all quilted till dark.  Juba brot home a barrel of flour.

 

Wednesday, March 22 – Another light snow fell last night & helps the sleighing a little. Juba at home in shop.  Rollin is out with him.  I have quilted all day.  Juba went to the Office & came after me.  I rec’d a letter from Sadie & a book for present.  Also a letter from Minnie.  Mr. Fleming drew a load of wood here for Juba to day.

 

Thursday, March 23 - Raining this morning. Juba working in shop. I have written a letter to Jesse.  Rollin is about well & out on the shop.  They both went to the blacksmith shop this morning to get some work done.  It has rained & snowed alternately all day.  Should it freeze tonight it will be good sleighing tomorrow.

 

Friday, March 24 – Very clear & pleasant this morning.  Juba is going to Burlington with Elbert Stagg.  Clara & Rollin have gone to the Corners with him to stay till he returns at night.  He returned on the six oclock train, therefore, they did not get home till late.  I rec’d a letter from Sadie.  I sent a letter to Jesse.

 

Saturday, March 25 – Cold north wind this morning.  Froze hard last night sit it will be quite good sleighing till the sun comes out. Juba, Clara & Rollin have gone to Vergennes, returned at two oclock. Said the road was nearly bare of snow.

 

Sunday, March 26 – Clouds, looks stormy, cold north wind, before night clouds disappeared & proved a bright day.  All at home.  Heard a Minister from Westport was to preach in the Baptist Church today, who is perfectly blind.  I would have been glad to hear him.  He expects to hold services here through the week, evening.

 

Monday, March 27 – A very bright cool day, thawing some where the sun touches.  Juba is working at his wood pile.  Walter Merrill is helping him.  Clara & finished washing at 10 oclock.  Mrs. Bert Allen has been very sick, learned tonight she was some better.  Gelty Allen brot our mail down.  I rec’d a book from Minnie as a birthday present. Have just commenced on our new barrel of Pillsbury flower.

 

Tuesday, March 28 – Cloudy & looks likely to storm before night.  Juba has gone to Frank Warner’s to see about some lumber.  Rollin has gone with him.  Walter Merrill is here sawing wood.  Juba & Rollin came back at noon.  Mr. Newell & the blind Minister called this afternoon.  He seems to be very anxious & hopeful of doing much good here in the cause of Christ.  I hope he may be successful.

 

Wednesday, March 29 – Some more snow falling this morning, very damp & will soon melt.  Hard sleighing & wheeling either.  Unpleasant going for evening meetings. Juba has George & Walter both this afternoon.  This A. M. it stormed so they did not come.  P. M. It is very pleasant.

 

Thursday, March 30 - A very pleasant morning, froze quite hard last night, most too cold for sugar making.  Heard last night Mrs. Bert Allen was not as well. 34 years & 8 months since our dear son John Rollin was slain in battle before Petersburg, Va. July 30, 1864.  What became of his body no one knows. Oh what a cruel war.  Juba, Clara & Rollin have gone to West Addison to attend an entertainment to get money for Mr. Long, the Minister.  Mr. Adams took d own a large load.

 

Friday, March 31 – Very bright & clear, just the same as the first day of March.  Juba & Walter M. finished sawing & splitting the wood pile.  Rollin has quite a pile he has sawed & cut.  Heard Mrs. Bert Allen was gaining slowly.
