August 1891


Aug. 1, 1891 – Very cloudy and I fear it will rain.  A surprise is in contemplation for Fannie this afternoon.  I hope it won’t rain.  Juba to Mr. Tenbrocks this forenoon.  Johnnie fishing with the David boys all day.

 

Aug. 2, 1891 – Very pleasant again today.  Not withstanding the unpleasant weather yesterday 23 or 4 ladies assembled here and enjoyed a nice surprise to Fannie.  Mrs. Spalding came over this afternoon to see Fannie.

 

Aug. 3, 1891 – A beautiful day.  Fannie & Johnnie have given up on going home on the G. A. R. excursion and will stay until Sept.  Juba, Loyal and Johnnie have gone over to Port Henry in a small boat.

 

Aug. 4, 1891 – Cloudy and a very little rain just before noon.  Juba at home. Louisa, Johnnie, Minnie & Fannie went onto grand view mountain with Mr. Staggs people.  Had a very nice and pleasant time.  Dear Jesse is 45 years old today.  Has been gone almost 6 years.

 

Aug. 5, 1891 – A very pleasant day. Juba at home.  Minnie has taken some photos of the house.  David and Jennie here.  Johnnie fishing caught a ___ that we weighed 5 lbs.

 

Aug. 6, 1891 – A very nice day.  Juba at home.  David & Jennie came over to eat fish with us. 

 

Aug. 7, 1891 – Some rain in the forenoon.  Juba at home.  A. M.  Fannie, Clara, Minnie & I went to Lyman Grandeys with Hariet, Jennie & Mrs. Gregory.  Johnnie to the lake with the Adams boys.

 

Aug. 8, 1891 – A beautiful day.  Juba at Mr. Hoyts making partition in chi___.  Jennie came over to let me see Emily’s letter and went from here up to Lyman’s to stay overnight.  Fannie gone to Ver. with Louisa.  Johnnie camped out over to the lake last night with friend Adams & Ben, came home at 4 today.

 

Aug. 9, 1891 – Cloudy and looks likely to rain.  Juba carried Clara & Rollin to her mothers.  All the rest at home.

 

Aug. 10, 1891 – Very hot day.  Juba to Mr. Hoyts.  Johnnie to see the Davis boys. Fannie & Minnie on the sick list.  Clara & I have been washing.

 

Aug. 11, 1891 – Very hot today.  Juba & Johnnie down to Louisa’s shingling her barn.  An excursion to Plattsburg.  A severe thunder shower just before night.

 

Aug. 12, 1891 – A very pleasant day.  Juba & Johnnie to Louisa’s. All of us over to Hariet’s. Some cousins from Akron, Ohio called to see us.

 

Aug. 13, 1891 – A pleasant day.  Juba to Mr. Hoyts in forenoon, afternoon at home.  All of us to Cornelia’s.

 

Aug. 14, 1891 – A pleasant day.  Juba gone to Port Henry with Loyal.  He returned at 3 oclock.  Johnnie carried Clara to her mothers.

 

Aug. 15, 1891 – A severe thunder shower in the night, rained this morning.  Juba at home, Johnnie fishing with Charles.  P.M.  I went down to Mrs. Sumers with Hariet, Jennie & Margaret.  More thunder and some rain.

 

Aug. 16, 1891 – A pleasant day.  Roads muddy. Juba to Ver. to see about having his teeth filled. Dentist busy, did not get them done.  Clara & Fannie washing.  Minnie & I playing (lady?).  Had dinner when Juba got home.  Brought some beef.

 

Aug. 17, 1891 – On the page for Sunday (16th) is a mistake, all are for today.  It is two years today since Jefferson died.

 

Aug. 18, 1891 – A pleasant day. Juba to Ver., had 9 teeth filled.

 

Aug. 19, 1891 – A beautiful day.  Had a neighborhood picnic at Mr. White’s boy at the suggestion of William Gardner.  All seemed to enjoy every moment.  Johnnie with the Davis boys, started after dinner in a small boat for a camping trip of a few days.  To Ti.

 

Aug. 20, 1891 – A very pleasant day.  Juba working on house.  There is a picnic at Adams Ferry today, everybody invited.  We could not go I am sorry to say.  Juba & Clara to the Corners.  Fannie & Minnie over to the other house (Hariets).

 

Aug. 21, 1891 – Somewhat rainy, Juba working on the house.  He carried me to Louisa Rents in the afternoon.  Hariet & Jennie went up.  Minnie felt too sick to go & Fannie had so many boys to wait upon.  I staid overnight.

 

Aug. 22, 1891 – Foggy & warm.  Juba came after me and let the baby ride.  He was so happy.  Fannie to Ver. with George Davis, to stay till Tuesday.  Johnnie fishing with Ed Davis.

 

Aug. 23, 1891 – Pleasant.  Juba at home. Johnnie carried Clara & baby to the Corners.  Minnie & I at home.

 

Aug. 24, 1891 – Showers all day.  Juba at home.  Mr. Hudson came and put up the bin cane troughs.  Johnnie with the Davis boys.

 

Aug. 25, 1891 – A very pleasant day.  Juba to Mr. Conants shingling barn.  We have been ironing.  P. M. Minnie to Mr. Staggs, evening they all came over here.  Johnnie went after his mother, she did not come, is going to Rutland tomorrow, don’t know when she will return.

 

Aug. 26, 1891 – Very pleasant day.  Juba at home.  Johnnie has gone with his Aunt Louisa to Shoreham.  All of us to William White’s.

 

Aug. 27, 1891 – Raining a little, Minnie, I & Jennie ____ City Park.  ___ & Mrs. Gregory also.  Josiah took his big team and carried us all to the depot.  Arrived at William Grandey about 11 oclock, met a welcome reception.

 

Aug. 28, 1891 – Still raining, marched about the park some. A. M. heard a lecture.  P. M. went to the observatory on the mountain.  Evening went to the Hall to see them dance.

 

Aug. 29, 1891 – Pleasant & cool.  Started for home on the 3 train. Minnie & Jennie went to Monkton. Sarah L. was there to take them.  Josiah brought me home.

 

Aug. 30, 1891 – A very pleasant day.  Juba went to Ver. after Minnie and Cora went after Jennie, arrived home soon after dark.  27 years & 1 month today since dear Rollin was killed in battle before Petersburg, Va.

 

Aug. 31, 1891 – Some rainy.  Have had a large washing.  P. M. Juba worked for Loyal.
