May 1891


May 1, 1891 – Another very pleasant day.  Juba did various kinds of work, mended Elberts wagon, at night went to Office.  I had a letter from Fannie.

 

May 2, 1891 – A very nice morning. Juba at home. Plowed the garden, did many other things.  George and Johnnie Sprague piled in the wood in our woodhouse.

 

May 3, 1891 – Pleasant part of the day, some rain in the forenoon. Juba has gone after Clara & the baby.  Rollin is 17 months old today.

 

May 4, 1891 – A very strong north wind and rather cold.  Juba preparing to build a porch. Millard Norton draging the garden.  Clara commenced weaning Rollin from the bottle.

 

May 5, 1891 – Cold north wind.  Juba working on the road.  Andrew & Charlie Stagg using the road machine.  Juba & Clara & Rolli been up to the Corners.  I had a letter from Minnie.

 

May 6, 1891 – Some cold but no wind.  Have had some April showers but so cold grass cannot grow.  Rollin has not been asleep today, misses his bottle. Juba at work on the road.  A Mr. Gibson staid here tonight.  Selling monuments.

 

May 7, 1891 – Pleasant day.  Juba at work on the road.  __ bought a monument of Mr. Gibson today, is to be put up next October.

 

May 8, 1891 – Pleasant day, not very warm.  Juba working for Mr. Hill, putting up a wired fence.  Rec’d a letter from Johnnie saying he & his mother were to start for Vt next Monday, arrive here Wednesday.

 

May 9, 1891 – Pleasant day, warmer than yesterday, very smoky.  Juba at home working on the porch.

 

May 10, 1891 – Very pleasant day, weather fine.  Juba carried Clara & Rollin up to her mothers.  I went to church with Mr. Staggs people.

 

May 11, 1891 – Nice day.  Juba on the road.

 

May 12, 1891 – Very pleasant weather.

 

May 13, 1891 – Weather very nice. Juba planted potato & corn, a. m.  Juba has gone with Charlie & their big team to Ver. after Fannie & Johnnie.  He returned without them, telegram said they would come tomorrow.

 

May 14, 1891 – A very pleasant day.  Juba carried me to the church & he & Charlie went after Fannie & Johnnie.  Stillman Grandey wife was buried today.  Fannie & Johnnie came. All night.  All were delighted to see them.

 

May 15, 1891 – Very pleasant in the forenoon.  P. M. clouded over for rain, wind strong in the south.  Loyal Spalding came this morning.  He & Juba have gone to Vergennes.

 

May 16, 1891 – It has rained all day, a nice growing time.  Juba in the shop, Johnnie has gone a fishing in the rain, came back with but two fish.  I have been writing to Minnie & Jennie.

 

May 17, 1891 – North wind had taken the clouds away and it is cold enough to chill the fruit I fear.  All at home.  Juba had a letter from Sadie.

 

May 18, 1891 – Clear and pleasant but cool north wind, think there will be a frost tonight.  Juba gone over the lake with Loyal Spalding.  We heard today Stillman was very sick.

 

May 19, 1891 – Very pleasant day.  Juba at Mr. Hoyt’s with other selectmen.  Mrs. Lyman came to see Fannie. Clara & baby up to her mothers.  Fannie had a letter from Sadie, all well.

 

May 20, 1891 – Very nice weather.  Juba gone with Loyal to buy a horse. Louisa & Fannie have gone to Shoreham to Mr. Lawrences’.  Bought some lemon & vanilla extract from Mr. Hindes.  60 cents.

 

May 21, 1891 - Cloudy with very light showers.  Juba to Mr. Hoyts with other selectmen.  Fannie & Louisa returned at night, had a pleasant visit.

 

May 22, 1891 – Weather very pleasant.  Stillman Grandey died this morning at 9 oclock. Juba at  home in a.m.  He went to Bridport with Loyal in p.m.

 

May 23, 1891 – Cloudy and cool north wind. Juba at home.  Willard Grandey and Mr. Sears were here to dinner.  Came to make arrangements for Stillmans funeral.

 

May 24, 1891 – Very nice pleasant day.  Brother George & Jesse were here to dinner.  Came to mind the funeral of Stillman Grandey.  All attended the funeral.  P.M. Juba went to Bridport with Louisa.  Fannie lived (?) with headache.

 

May 25, 1891 -  A beautiful summer day.  Juba at home working on the porch.  Johnnie  helping him.

 

May 26, 1891 – Rainy day.  Juba in shop.

 

May 27, 1891 – Pleasant & cool, almost a frost last night.  Juba to Rutland this morning, returned at 4 oclock.  Mr. Curlen & Louisa went also.  Found Kate very nervous.  Juba bought churn, wash tub and cream pail.

 

May 28, 1891 – Very pleasant.  Juba in shop and working on porch.

 

May 29, 1891 – Pleasant day, some cloudy.  Juba working on porch.  Fannie down at Mrs. Lyman’s to see Mrs. Adams.  Fannie had a long letter from Sadie.

 

May 30, 1891 -  A. M. rainy.  26 years & 10 months since our dear sons death. Juba started at 2 oclock to meet Eric Trask at the depot in Ver.  He is here on a visit for the first time in three years. P.M.  Juba & Johnnie over at the lake fishing, caught 1 dozen and 1 eel.

 

May 31, 1891 – A very pleasant day.  26 years yesterday & 10 months since Rollin was slain at the battle of Petersburg, Va.  July 30, 1864.  Eric Trask made us a short call.
