February 1891


Feb. 1, 1891 – A very pleasant day with warm south wind. I have been up to Loyal Rents – he is quite sick.  Mr. Edric Adams  youngest son is very sick.  Juba & Clara to the post office this afternoon.

 

Feb. 2, 1891 – Very pleasant day, not a cloud to be seen, which betides a happy year.

 

Feb. 3, 1891 – Warm with some rain.  Juba to Vergennes with logs.  Brother George is 78 years old today. Baby Rollin is 14 months old today.  Walked alone, nearly across the room.  Is so full of play he cannot wait to walk.

 

Feb. 4, 1891 – A very bright day, the clouds towards night grew cold fast.  Juba & Charlie drew home the lumber, they carried to Vergennes.  Juba had a letter from Mr. Whitney of Reeseville, asking him to come up there.

 

Feb. 5, 1891 – It has been an extremely cold day, coldest this winter, I think.  Juba has gone to Reeseville to see Mr. Whitney.  Rode to Port Henry with Joseph to take the train.

 

Feb. 6, 1891 – More mild and comfortable being out today. Juba & Clara to the Corners.  Baby slept while they were gone.  2 years today since they were married.  Clara called to see her Uncle Loyal.  He is no better.

 

Feb. 7, 1891 – A mild cloudy day, so much ice on the ground makes it hard to walk about. A. 

M. Juba drove over to Mrs. Spalding after the saw, Clara went with him. P. M. Juba went to Mrs. Wards, wood chopping cord wood.  George Maeville(?) is chopping for him.  Snowing tonight.

 

Feb. 8, 1891 – A light snow has fallen all day, so it is five or six inches deep with a good icy bottom.  All at home.  About 4 oclock Juba & Clara went to the Office for the mail.  Baby Rollin & I are alone.  He perfectly happy so I will spend all my time with him.

 

Feb. 9, 1891 – A very nice day.  Towards night a gale of wind passed over & a little hail with it. Juba gone down to the ice house with Silas Noyt (?). Evening, went to the Office with Fred Grandey and sent a letter to Levi.

 

Feb. 10, 1891 – Very nice and pleasant, much warmer than yesterday, is thawing some. Juba has sold the __ cow to Mr. Laban Allen.

 

Feb. 11, 1891 – A beautiful clear bright day.  The people are ____the splendid sleighing.  Juba has had Charlie drawing wood to S. Grandey, 3 loads.

 

Feb. 12, 1891 – Another beautiful winter day, some colder than yesterday.  Juba has gone to Reeseville to see Mr. Whitney again.  Eddie Rogers carried him to Westport.

 

Feb. 13, 1891 – A nice winter day, north wind.  Juba returned this afternoon from Reeseville. I have written to Fannie this morning.

 

Feb. 14, 1891 – Very cold & pleasant sleighing splendid. Juba & Clara gone to Ver.  I forgot to send my letter to Fannie.  Sister Jane would have been 70 years old today had she lived.  Juba been to Port Part (?) & back tonight.  Sent my letter to the Port Henry Office.

 

Feb. 15, 1891 – Very cold this morning, wind south. Before night moderately strong south wind.

Juba has been to New Haven, returned about 5 oclock.  Louisa came in a few minutes.

 

Feb. 16, 1891 – A nice comfortable day to be out, the snow has melted fast.  Juba, with Charlie have drawn Mr. Whitney’s ice tools here.  Had a letter from Sadie, all well as usual.

 

Feb. 17, 1891 – Morning quite pleasant, soon it commenced to snow, continued to night then it began to rain. Juba part of the day to ice house with Mr. Hoyt, drew two loads of wood on Charlie did for him.  Mr. Carter came to see him.

 

Feb. 18, 1891 – A very pleasant day.  Juba put uptown notice.  Juba & Charlie finished drawing Lyman Grandey’s wood – 11 cords. Juba to the ice house part of the day.  Mr. Hoyt and Mr. Marshall (?) have bought the ice house & Mr. White is taking it down for them.

 

Feb. 19, 1891 – Cold this morning but bright and pleasant.  Juba worked on the ice house for Mr. White.  I visited at Wm Staggs with Miss Thingman (?).

 

Feb. 20, 1891 – Cloudy and storming.  Juba & Clara to the Corners.  Did not snow until after they left here, has snowed all afternoon. Is warmer than in the morning. Heard of General Sherman’s death.  Died the 14th.

 

Feb. 21, 1891 – A little rain this morning, has cleared up and very pleasant, thawing quite fast.

Juba went to Ver. with Mr. Staggs.  Henry & Charlotte came about noon, was so glad to see them.

 

Feb. 22, 1891 – Some cooler & very pleasant.  Juba brought Mrs. Frank down to see the baby. I have been over to Wm Curlens with Henry & Charlotte. Heard a man killed himself in Ver. yesterday.

 

Feb. 23, 1891 – Very pleasant day.  Henry & Charlotte left for home this morning. We had a visit with them.

 

Feb. 24, 1891 – Warm & pleasant, thawing fast.  Juba to Vergennes with Fred Grandey in the afternoon.  Forenoon me & Clara went to the Office, said Loyal Rent was failing, could not live many days. Weather growing warmer and raining.

 

Feb. 25, 1891 – Raining fast, snow disappearing.  Juba at home.  A sociable to Mr. Staggs this evening.  I have written to Minnie & Sadie.

 

Feb. 26, 1891 – A nice and pleasant morning. Juba gone to Mr. Hills to get his horse shod. Snow nearly all gone. Mr. Loyal Rent died last evening at 11 oclock.  Funeral Friday at one oclock at the house, have no sermon, praying or singing.

 

Feb. 27, 1891 – About two inches of snow fell last night with make the going better.  Very nice and pleasant this morning.  Juba gone to Chimney Point returned in time to attend the funeral of Mr. Rents.  Afternoon bought a load of straw of Fred Grandey.  Evening went after the mail with C. Stagg.

 

Feb. 28, 1891 – Pleasant morning, though cold with south wind.  Juba & Fred have gone to Port Henry with a load of straw, returned at noon. Afternoon went to Vergennes. About two inches of snow fell this p.m.
