December 1891

Dec. 1, 1891 – A pleasant day.  Juba to Mr. Curlen’s funeral at J. Curlens house.  P. M.  Juba to Mr. Hills fixing a cutter for Mr. Hills.

 

Dec. 2, 1891 – Warm & pleasant, ground thawing out.  Juba to Mr. Hills all day.

 

Dec. 3, 1891 – Still warm & pleasant.  Juba & Clara to the Corners.  Juba doing some work there.  Rollin is two years old today, fleshy, hearty and well. Full of talk, says some words very plain.

 

Dec. 4, 1891 – A very little snow fell last night. Juba went very early this morning to Ver. to work for Sam Gaines, repairing his barns.  I sent a letter to the National Tribune & money for the paper for Mr. Hill.

 

Dec. 5, 1891 – A very high wind all day yesterday & last night.  Juba had a severe cold in his head and I fear that he will more working in this strong wind.  Expect him home tonight.  It will be very dark and muddy.  Louisa staid her last night, she has gone to Ver. today.

 

Dec. 6, 1891 – Warm & pleasant for the time of year and very muddy.  Juba came home last night, said it was very hard wheeling.  Cold no better.

 

Dec. 7, 1891 – Very cold and looks likely to storm.  Juba working for Joseph repairing his shed.  His cold is no better, seems to be all in his head.  I sent Sadie & Johnnie some newspapers today.

 

Dec. 8, 1891 – Strong south winds yet, not very cold.  Joseph moving his shed and Juba is helping him.

 

Dec. 9, 1891 – Wind strong in the south, yet warm & pleasant.  Juba at home.

 

Dec. 10, 1891 – Weather very nice, wind south yet.   Juba working for Mr. Hill & Mrs. Trask. Clara & Rollin went with him.

 

Dec. 11, 1891 – Weather still very nice, wind south.  Juba to Mrs. Trask & Mr. Hills, came home before night.

 

Dec. 12, 1891 – Weather very nice, wind south yet.  Juba got some wood for Mr. John Davis.  He is failing fast, not able to walk at all without help.

 

Dec. 13, 1891 – Beautiful day, not a cloud to be seen, wind south & warm as September. Juba carried Clara & Rollin to the Corners.  Came back & went over to Mr. Dudleys, came back before two.  After supper went after Clara & Rollin.  I have been writing to Mrs. Gregory.

 

Dec. 14, 1891 – Some cloudy and a little colder, some wind north. Juba working for Wm. Curlen hewing timber for barn.  Eve.  Juba & Clara to the Post Office.  After their return Juba was called to go up to John Davis’.  He died about 6 oclock.

 

Dec. 15, 1891 – Snowing briskly this morning.  Juba gone to carry Jesse Curlen over to dig the grave for Mr. Davis.  P. M. Went over to Ver. with Charlie Spalding to get a coffin for Mr. Davis.

 

Dec. 16, 1891 – Pleasant but quite cold.  Juba attended the funeral of John Davis. Evening circulated a subscription for benefit of Mr. Francis, the Methodist minister.

 

Dec. 17, 1891 – Real winter today freezing hard, not snow enough for sleighing.  Juba at home till 3 oclock then started again with the subscription, went as far as Ephram Allen’s.

 

Dec. 18, 1891 – More mild, south wind.  Juba helped Wm. Curlen kill and dress his pig & then dressed ours, after which he went down to Mr. Carpenter’s to repair a pump (?).  Evening he, Clara & Rollin to Mr. C. Tulls visitng.

 

Dec. 19, 1891 – Warm & pleasant.  Morning Juba had his horse shod & cut up his  pig, salted it.   P. M. He & Clara to Ver. Rollin staid with me.  I had a letter from Mary Dayfoot.

 

Dec. 20, 1891 – Cloudy but not very cold.  Juba, Clara & Rollin to the Corners.

 

Dec. 21, 1891 – Warm & nice.  Juba working for Mr. Curlen. Evening he & Charlie Spalding went to Addison to collecting money for the Ministers Christmas present.

 

Dec. 22, 1891 – Warm & pleasant.  Juba working for Wm. Curlen, making a shed. Evening he & Charlie Spalding go to Addison again, have collected over 30 dollars.

 

Dec. 23, 1891 – Very cloudy and it looks like rain.  Think it rained some last night, no snow to be seen.  Juba at home making a sleigh for Mr. Dudley. Heard Mr. Noble Grosvenor died Tuesday.  It rained all afternoon.

 

Dec. 24, 1891 -  Evening he & Charlie Spalding go to Addison again, have collected over 30 dollars.

 

Dec. 23, 1891 – Very cloudy and it looks like rain.  Think it rained some last night, no snow to be seen.  Juba at home making a sleigh for Mr. Dudley. Heard Mr. Noble Grosvenor died Tuesday.  It rained all afternoon.

 

Dec. 24, 1891 – Warm & pleasant over head, the ground is all thawed out & the going is very hard.  Juba at work in shop.  He & Clara have gone to attend at the Methodist gathering & see them distribute present from a Christmas tree.

 

Dec. 25, 1891 – Still warm & cloudy.  Juba in shop.  No frost in the ground, not a particle of snow to be seen.  Rec’d a letter last night from Minnie & Fannie with a nice present from Minnie.

 

Dec. 26, 1891 – Warm & pleasant.  Juba in the shop.  Before noon began to rain & continued to night.  Road very muddy.  Juba sent a letter to Sadie.

 

Dec. 27, 1891 – A very pleasant day.  Juba after Clara & Rollin.

 

Dec. 28, 1891 – Very clear & pleasant. Ground a little frozen this morning, sun thawed it out very soon.  I don’t think there has been so many warm nice days in December since my remembrance.  Juba in shop making sleigh for Mr. Dudley.

 

Dec. 29, 1891 – Very warm & pleasant, wind in south.  Juba in shop.  Zenos (?) & Mary are here on a visit. She 62 years old today.  They live in Grosslake, Michigan.  A. M. commenced raining. 

 

Dec. 30, 1891 – A powerful rain fell last night, the road were never any worse for mud.  Juba in shop.  27 years 5 months since our dear son John Rollin was slain in battle of Petersburg, Va.  July 30, 1864. 

 

Dec. 31, 1891 – A beautiful clear cool day not a particle of snow to be seen.  The mud is frozen and roads are very rough. Juba has gone to Ver. with Wm. Curlen.  Bought a dollars worth of sugar and a dollars worth of cloth for Mrs. Harris (on the town.
