October 1891


1 Oct. 1891 – A beautiful day, first frost this fall.  Hariet came in for a few minutes, said she and Mrs. Gregory had been to Mrs. Beaches funeral, brought last nights mail.  Clara sent me her letter from Juba.  He is well & away out in Butte City, Mon. Louisa comes after dark and staid till morning.

 

2 Oct. 1891 – A beautiful day. Louisa came back and churned. Have dinner went to Vergenne with Mrs. Sprague. A letter from Minnie, Sadie and Charlotte came tonight. Jennie arrived safely and staid overnight with Minnie.

 

3 Oct. 1891 – A very pleasant day.  Louisa to Ver. with friend Adams (?), home at noon.  Said it was very warm, warmest this summer.  I was happily surprised to see Juba back tonight at 11 oclock.

 

4 Oct.1891 – A beautiful day, rather warm. Juba at home, towards night took Louisa’s horse and went up after Clara & Rollin.  He is having double teeth and is not very well.  Am so thankful to have Juba home.

 

5 Oct. 1891 – A. M. very warm.  P. M. wind came out of the north and was cool & nice.  Louisa has been washing for me.  Juba is picking up the apples and doing several kinds of work.

 

6 Oct. 1891 – Very pleasant and a cool north wind.  Juba shingling for Fred Grandey.  Josiah & family to Bridport to see her brother Wm. M. married to Miss Moore. I went over to see Mrs. Gregory a few moments.

 

7 Oct 1891 – Cloudy this morning.  Juba to Fred’s till morning.  It commenced raining about noon.

 

8 Oct. 1891 – We have had a splendid rain, the roads must be very muddy.

 

9 Oct. 1891 – A beautiful day. Juba in shop.  P. M. Got Tim’s wagon and carried Clara & Rollin up home.  After dark Henry Lawrence & wife came.

 

10 Oct. 1891 – A beautiful day.  A. M. Juba at home. P. M. To Ver. with Clayton Curlen. Henry & wife went to Ver., go home tomorrow.  Louisa came up to see them a few minutes.

 

11 Oct. 1891 – A pleasant day, frost last night.  Juba to Vergennes for George Merrill.  I rec’d a letter from Minnie & Jennie.

 

12 Oct. 1891 – Pleasant day, frost last night.  Juba to Ver. twice today, for E. Adams & George Merrill.  Louisa to Ver. with Mary Sprague.

 

13 Oct. 1891 – A nice day.  A. M. Juba at home.  P. M. worked for Mr. Tull.  Clara & I visited to Mrs. Lyman’s.

 

14 Oct. 1891 – Cloudy this morning, rained a little, soon cleared off & was fine.  Juba & Clara to Ver., baby staid with me, was very happy all the time.  Juba bought his coal. 2 ton $11.

 

15 Oct. 1891 – A very pleasant day.  Juba to Edric’s (?) awhile.

 

16 Oct. 1891 – Pleasant day, Juba working at his wagon.  Juba & Clara to the Office, Rollin staid with me.

 

17 Oct. 1891 – A beautiful day.  Juba at Edric’s part of the day.  Wm. Curlen ___ our coal.  $1. hundred.

 

18 Oct. 1891 – A pleasant day, only a strong south wind.  Louisa & I went to Henry Lawrence’s in Shoreham. Called at Mr. Husted in Bridport.

 

19 Oct. 1891 – A very nice day.  Louisa & I came home, had a very nice ride. Juba went to Bridport to prepare the ground for Louisa’s monument.

 

20 Oct. 1891 – This morning it is raining, finally rained all day.  Juba cannot finish his work today.

 

21 Oct. 1891 – Has been a pleasant day since 8 oclock.  I presume Juba will stay until he gets the work all done.  Mrs. Harris came this afternoon.  She is living with Sarah P. in Monkton.

 

22 Oct. 1891 – A very pleasant day.  Juba came home this morning, said he finished the work.  The ground is all ready for the monument.

 

23 Oct. 1891 – Cold north wind though clear & pleasant.  Juba in shop, part of the time picked apples.  At night Juba & Clara up to the Corners.  I had a letter from Jennie Pope.

 

24 Oct. 1891 – Cold north wind yet.  Juba finished mending Mr. Johnson’s double wagon.  Finished picking his apples. Clara has cleaned the chambers.

 

25 Oct. 1891 – A very pleasant day, not quite as cold as yesterday.  Juba carried Clara & Rollin to the Corners, went after them at night.  Clara said Mrs. Barto died yesterday, funeral tomorrow.

 

26 Oct. 1891 – Pleasant but some cloudy.  Juba working for Fred Grandey.  Clara & I have done the washing.  It is 50 years today since Jefferson & I were married.  Years in a great measure of happiness mingled at times with deep sorrow.

 

27 Oct. 1891 – Pleasant & cold.  Juba working for Fred Grandey.  Clara ironing. Rollin teasing for something to go outdoors.  I have been baking and preparing apples today.  Purchased some matches and clothes pins from a peddler.

 

28 Oct 1891 – Cloudy but pleasant.  Juba & Clara gone to Ver., Rollin stays with me.  Is happy and contented if I spend most of my time with him.  They returned before 4 oclock.

 

29 Oct. 1891 – Froze hard last night, cold this morning but at noon much warmer.  Juba working for Silas Hoyt.  Clara cleaning house while I take charge of Rollin.

 

30 Oct. 1891 – Pleasant day.  Juba to Mr. Hoyts.  Clara & Rollin went to the Corners with Juba this morning, to stay till Sunday.  I have been cleaning house some.  27 years and 3 months since our dear son was slain.

 

31 Oct. 1891 – Pleasant day.  Juba to Mr. Hoyt’s yet.  Louisa gone to Ver. with Mary Sprague.
