A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL!

Although this may prove a testing time for all of use, let's keep positive. Our ancestors faced greater challenges in the past. Let's make them proud of use!!

Hi Folks

I wish all users of the site, wherever you are in the world, a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

I know the future appears a little bleak with a deteriorating economic situation but I’m an old enough “bunny” to remember previous down turns. It was often the simple pleasures that satisfied; the less expensive joys of family and friends. When things get tough it’s amazing how unimportant that new car or larger house seem.

Christmas is a time to enjoy your family and friends. Delight in that warm feeling of companionship and conversation. Treasure it!!

Every best wish

Alan

I have had an increasing number of requests from site visitors for a "copy of the site." I have considered producing a Word Document but this would amount to several thousand pages and would be virtually impossible to add updates. I have therefore decided to take a couple of months off to feed the data into Legacy 5 and so produce a GEDCOM. This can be burnt onto a CD and would be available for anyone who wishes for a copy. There would, off course, be a small fee to cover costs and postage. In the mean time I will upload it on to Rootsweb so you can see its progress. You can find it on the following link:-

Dear American Site Users

I must admit, eight years ago I thought the American people had collectively gone mad, only to reinforce that state of mind four years later. I realise that as a British citizen I can not hope to be as knowledgeable of US politics as yourselves but I do pride myself on keeping abreast of world and US events, particularly in the economic field.

Let me congratulate you on the election of Barack Obama as the next President of the United States. Over here we don't see him as a black politician, merely a man who just might have judged it right. He may be young, untried, inexperienced. One of our greatest Prime Ministers was William Pitt and he was only 24 years old when he took office. Obama has certainly restored our faith in America. Perhaps you did not realise how much we detested Bush and his policies. In the latter years of his administration he had become a figure of ridicule. That is not what you want in the most powerful man in the world.

Whether you like it or not, as citizens of the leader of the free world, you have a massive responsibility. The other democracies of the globe look to you for the common sense to pick the right man - thank goodness you have done just that!

What you need to do now is to support him. He has a monumental job to do and nothing can be achieved without your united backing and patience. Democrat or Republican, black or white, American or European, all must work together. I am sure, for what worth, as a citizen of your oldest ally, he has mine!

And can we succeed?

"Yes we can!"

For some months now I have been receiving emails from those who have found ancestors on my old "Royal and Noble Families of Britain" database on Rootsweb. Unfortunately this can't be changed or added to. Many of these families feature in the line down from Anne Plantagenet, Duchess of Exeter, sister of Edward IV and Richard III. I have therefore gone in to the Tardis that is my cupboard of "stuff" and come up with a new line! There is something exciting about a new line - it's bit like setting off on a new journey - I must get out more!! So, here it is - RUTLAND. Why Rutland? The first prominent family is the Manners family who became the earls and then, dukes, of Rutland.

An email from a gentleman in California, U.S.A. prompted me to go rummaging in the dark corners of the cupboard in which I keep my small mountain of notes and “stuff.” I dusted off an ancient lever-arch binder, which contained a mass of scribbled notes and diagrams gleaned from numerous sources found at the S.O.G. in London many years ago.

This covered the early generations of descent from William Longespee, Earl of Salisbury, my correspondent’s ancestor. He was the bastard son of one of England’s greatest kings and founder of the Plantagenet dynasty, Henry II (William Longespee, not my correspondent!). Because this features people who lived many centuries ago and are not of the well-documented direct royal line, many dates are logical estimations and whole tranches of the tree are missing – there are simply no records of those involved.

So here is the first section of a new line, the first new line for 18 months.

Sections Tudor 38, 39 and 40 are almost exclusively descendants who have lived or live in the United States. John Parke Custis, at the top of Tudor 40, was the stepson of President George Washington. Being at least three thousand miles away from any primary American source, these two sections are not as complete as I would like. It is therefore up to the good people of the US to assist in any way they can. If you recognise anyone, perhaps one is your grandfather or mother, and you can add to the project, please email me. My email address is on the Home Page. Any help would be most gratefully received!

I have started to compile a database featuring the Landed Gentry of Britain. If you are interested it can be found on Rootsweb.com under the database code "landed." This is at a very early stage but will grow when I fancy a change from William the Conqueror and his descendants! Once it has reached a reasonable size, I will create a direct link from the Genealogy Page.

Lots to tell you today!!

The Lake Maggiore page has been expanded to SIX pages full of photographs of this beautiful area of Italy. There are still a couple of pages to come. This year it seems the Americans have discovered it! There was a whole Art Group there all, no doubt, taking back their own image of the Lake.

I have also started yet another line entitled HANOVER. It stems from Elizabeth, daughter of King James I, and wonders through the nobility and royals of most of the countries of Europe. Eventually it will reach Queen Elizabeth II ("God Bless 'er!!" as we say in England).

Hi Folks

I have just received a substantial new source. New sources are two-edged swords - It's great to have a whole load of new lines but, with a text database, it can mean a massive rearrangement of existing pages.  I have therefore decided to bring in an ancillary layer of pages to carry the information. For example the ancillary pages for Conqueror will be Conqueror A1, Conqueror A2 and so on. Where there are only a few names to be added, they will be included in the existing pages. The ancillary pages will be for large tranches of data.   The first will appear shortly when I've had a chance to get my head round all the information!
