      Simon De Ruine was born in 1615. Simon married Magdalena Vander Straaten, daughter of Ladowycks Van Der Stratten. Simon De Ruine died in 1678.
      Simon De Ruine, father of Marie, wife of Samuel Demarest, and of
Jacomina, wife of Jean Demarest, styled himself a Walloon, although he is
reported to have come from Valenciennes near Landrecy. In order to escape
religious persecution he went to Holland, where he remained for 15 years. Here he married twice,
his second wife being Magdelena Van der Straaten. Nothing is known
concerning his first wife, other than that she was the mother of his two
older daughters, born in Holland, about 1645 and 1647. These children
accompanied their father and step-mother when they came to America. They sailed on the ship De Trouw, a
private trader which left Harlingen, Holland, Feb. 13, 1659. Simon's name
appeared on the passenger list as "Symon Drune from Henegouw". Fellow passengers wre Epke
Banta and Jllis Jansen Mandeville. Simon was one of thirty-two men who
settled in Harlem to the north of New Amsterdam. The original allotments of
land were soon taken up by an influx of settlers who gave their attention to farming. Simon
first owned two lots on Jochem Pieters Flat, and in 1662, acquired Lot #3
of the same grant, which lay between the Harlem River and old Kingsbridge
Road. He resided at at Henegouw, Holland, Netherlands, before 12-Feb-1659. He and Magdalena Vander Straaten immigrated on 12-Feb-1659 to New Netherlands; aboard the ship "De Trouw."

On 29-Aug-1641 He was elected a member of the "Twelve Men," tjhe first representative body within the limits of New York and New Jersey. "This board was advisory to Gov. Kieft, and represented the inhabitants of Manhattan, Brooklyn and Pavonia (in the consideration of the general treatment of the Indiams>, and were elected to suggest means to9 punish the Indians for a murder they had committed."
He resided at at Manhattan, New York County, New York, on 1-Oct-1650. On 23-Oct-1654 He secured a grant at Pavonia now Jersey City. described as follows: located between New York Bay and Newark Bay, and comprised about ninety acres more or less. He settled on this land but in September, 1655 he was driven from his home with the other settlers by the Indians. One hundred Dutch were killed, one hundred and fifty were carried into captivity, and more than three hundred lost their homes, grain and cattle.
On 17-Apr-1657 He was admitted to the rights of a "Small Burgher" which entitled him to the freedom of trade and the privilege of being received into the guilds of Manhattan.
