The birthdate given for Jan Pietersen Haring in the Haring Family Notebook is December 26, 1633. However we have come to believe that he was the Jan baptized in Hoorn, Holland on December 18, 1633, the child of Pieter Jansz and Maritie Pieters, and that the birthdate should have been read as December 16 rather than 26. The date was undoubtedly copied into the Notebook from a family Bible, and the way a "1" was written could easily have been read as a
"2" according to experts in early handwriting. on 17-Dec-1633.

He immigrated on 15-Apr-1660 to New Amsterdam, New York County, New York. He joined at Dutch Reformed Church, New York City, New York County, New York, 28-Oct-1668. In 1681 he was the moving spirit behind the purchase from the Tappen Indians of the Tappan Patent, which comprised 16,000 acres of fertile wilderness in the valley between the Hudson River on the East and the Hackensack River on the West. Was one of the chief promothers of the purchase of the Tappan Patent in what is now Rockland County, NY, and owned the largest share (3/16ths) in that engerprise. Jan Pieterse Haring did not live to settle on the Tappan Land, but his wife and foru sons took up his shares and founded the family to follow.
