Was your ancestor Quaker? I could not find a William LEWIS in my Berks Co Church records for pre-1800, which are predominately Reformed or Lutheran. There were other LEWIS at Exeter MM, but no William. In the Will abstract book I have, these are the William LEWIS's mentioned. They may not be the same William either! I am assuming this first one is your ancestor: William LEWIS, Reading 3/4/1786 Adm of Sarah LEWIS, the widow. David LEWIS, Cumru will dated 3/28/1754; proved 4/30/1754 Provides for wife Elenor To son, William, the plantation where I now live. To son Nathan, 1/2 of my land next to the river Schuylkill, stock, when 21. To dau Hannah LEWIS, 50 pounds at 21. Excs: wife Elenor and son WIlliam Wits: Thomas NICHOLAS, Evan THOMAS, John DAVIS William LEWIS witnessed will of David JONES, Cumru on 8/6/1784. In Morton Montgomery's 'History of Berks Co', pub 1909, there is this: 'Cumru, from the name of a district in Wales, whence the first settlers had emigrated.' It was first settled in 1732 and became a town in 1737. In a book called 'The Passing Scene' vol2, by George Meiser IX, there is the following about LEWIS: 'The first settlers to occupy portions of land now included with the borders of present day West Reading borough were Welshmen Hugh Jones, David LEWIS, and Evan Price - in the 1730's.' In my 1734 Landholders tax book for Philadelphia Co: David LEWIS had 100 acres in Upper Merion. That area was in the Welsh tract! First taxables for Cumru include these (1752 county was created, but it is thought this list is from 1754 )- James, George, Richard and Eleanor LEWIS (Widow of David).

Relationship=4th great-grandfather of David Kipp Conover Jr.
Relationship=3rd great-grandfather of Virginia Ailene Swift.
James Iddings was born in 1759 at Robeson, Berks County, Pennsylvania. He was born in 1759 at Exeter Twp., Berks County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of William Iddings and Hannah Lewis. James married Mary Peirce, daughter of Caleb Peirce Jr. and Ann Mendenhall, on 17-Jun-1780 at Quaker Monthly Meeting, Concord, Chester County, Pennsylvania; "James Iddings, son of William of East Cain, and Mary Peiree. daughter of Caleb of Thombuiyf fifth month 17, 1780, at Concord Monthly Meeting. Witness: William Iddings, Hannah Iddings, William Iddings Jr., Hannah Iddings, Caleb, Ann and Tom Peiree, John and John Jr. Peiree, Caleb Jr., Joe and Rebecca Peiree, Mary and Bob and Phebe Peiree."
James Iddings died on 3-Aug-1811 at Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.
On 1798 James, wife Mary and Children came to Duck Creel 1798 from Wilmington.
James taught at a Friends girl acadamy. The acadamy was known for its needlework such as samplers. James wrote a Geography book now in the rare book section of the Library of Congress.
James Iddings (1755-1811) was the fourth son of William (g3) and Hannah (Lewis) Iddings. He was bom August 3, 1755, in Robeson, Berks County, Pennsylvania. He followed the Quaker faith throughout his life. After the death of his mother in 1765, his father moved the family to Reading. James was a studious young man and must have spent what pocket money he could earn on books. He was sent to Philadelphia where he attended college. He listed his profession as mason, the trade he must have learned from his father. He also followed in his father and older brother's foot steps, for he became a Quaker minister. He met and married Mary Peiree, daughter of Caleb and Ann (Mendenhall) Peiree. The Concord Monthly Meeting records their marriage on June 17, 1780. The marriage certificate reads: "James Iddings, son of William of East Cain, and Mary Peiree. daughter of Caleb of Thombuiyf fifth month 17, 1780, at Concord Monthly Meeting. Witness: William Iddings, Hannah Iddings, William Iddings Jr., Hannah Iddings, Caleb, Ann and Tom Peiree, John and John Jr. Peiree, Caleb Jr., Joe and Rebecca Peiree, Mary and Bob and Phebe Peiree."

In 1783 James was residing in Darby, Chester County (now in Delaware County), Pennsylvania. On April 25, 1787, taking his wife and three children, he moved from Darby to the Exeter Monthly Meeting. He did not stay there long, for they moved to the Concord Monthly Meeting on September 24, 1788. On June 14, 1791, the family is recorded in Hennco County, Virginia, on their way south. William (g3) died in 1800, so James returned to Pennsylvania for the funeral. He was appointed as executor of father's will. Since he could not remain in the area long enough to settle the estate, he relinquished his share in the proceeds. The court appointed his brother John to execute the will. There are records stating that he departed on November 1791 for religious visits to meetings in western Pennsylvania and south to Virginia and North Carolina, returning to Concord in August 1792. Sometime shortly after 1794, we find James in Smyrna, Delaware, in an area known as Duck Creek. He remained there for about eleven years as pnncipal of a Quaker girl's school. While there, he wrote a geography text book. Some of the text is written in rhyme to aid in memorization. It is now housed is the Library of Congress's rare book collection. Of particular interest is the description of the rivers of the west coast. It is surprisingly accurate. The chapter titles are: "Globes and Problems;" "Rivers;" "States;" "Canada:" "South America;" "West Indies;" "Great Britain;" "Capitols of Nations;" and "Boundaries and Holy Land."There is also a poem on the seasons of the years in this same book, copied below. It affords us a little insight into his character, intelligence, and his quality as a teacher. Regretfully, we don't have its title.

then begins the springtime of the year.
And whilst the Equinoctial he pause
Form pole to pole shall equal light defuse
Thus equal days and nights be found
In Europe, Africa, and all the world around
But when the sun in Cancer shall begin
"Tis here our golden summer ushers in
And now rage sun our longest day brings forth
When he was greatest declination north
Next Libra: when the unwearied sun in here
Autumn begins, which crowns the laboring year
The sun again in equinox shall bring
And equal days and nights as in the spring
When Capricorn' last the sun shall gain
Bleak winter now brings his gloomy reign
Now are the longest nights and shortest days
The sun obliquely shines feeble rays
His longest declination south is here
Of any penod throughout the year.

Joseph (g5) Iddings (1785-1845).2 Joseph was a veteran of the War of 1812. The Pennsylvania Archives, Sixth Series, Vol. II, pages 660 and 661, also Sixth Series, Vol. VIII, page 797, lists him as mustered into the army June 16, 1812. On September 5, 1812, he was assigned as Private Joseph Iddings, to Captain Taylor's Company, 2nd Regiment, Pennsylvania Light Infantry. He was discharged on December 5, 1814. His enlisting into the army was enough to cause the Quaker Church to disown him. He married on December 5, 1813, Hannah Hoopes, a year before his discharge from the army. Hannah, a daughter of Ezra and Ann (Hickman) Hoopes, was born near West Chester. Since Hannah and Joseph were married by a magistrate, William Everhardt, in West Chester, and not in a Quaker
ceremony, as recorded at the Goshen Monthly Meeting, she also was disowned. They lived in West Chester until 1823, then moved to New Castle, in Beaver County (now Lawrence County), Pennsylvania, where their last three children were born.
