James Garland was born circa 1827 at Manchester, Lancashire, England. He was the son of Stella Walmsley. James married Amanda Conover, daughter of Stephen Conover and Margaret Ann Reid. James Garland died on 6-Aug-1884; suicide.
Professor James Garland, a musician, music store owner, and music teacher. Garland and his family lived in the large Italianate house on the corner of South First Avenue and Benner Street.

On September 20, 1875, Professor Garland committed the Highland Park crime of the nineteenth century. The attempted murder of his wife Amanda was detailed without reserve for several days in the New Brunswick Daily Times. As his legally separated wife and two daughters were packing their things in preparation to move to an apartment in New Brunswick, Garland unexpectedly returned home from the music store and fired three shots at his wife. Two of the three bullets hit her. She ran outside and collapsed on the front lawn while Garland proceeded to an upstairs bedroom where he shot himself three times, partially slit his throat, and took a hammer to his own skull. Despite his violent attempt at suicide, unconsciousness ultimately saved his life. Neighbors who heard the shots quickly sent for two local doctors. As Dr. English attended to Amanda Garland, the other, Dr. Mulford, attended to the professor. Both Garland, who ultimately spent five years in state prison, and his ex-wife, survived. After her recovery she, along with her children, moved to New Brunswick and continual to run the music store. Garland returned to the New Brunswick area after his prison term. His next attempt at suicide in 1884 was successful.
