ADDA A. BUCKLES BELOVED CITIZEN TAKEN IN DEATH
TEACHER 12 YEARS S.H.S PRINCIPAL AT TIME OF 1ST GRADUATING CLASS
Adda A. Buckles, beloved citizen, teacher and friend died July 2, 1948, at the age of 83 years, at the home of her daughter Mrs. Ernest Brunger at Mt. Pleasant, Utah, where she had gone for a visit.
Adda A., daughter of Mr. and Mrs Francis Christopher Fouts was born March 15, 1865, in Fulton County, Illinois. At an early age she came with her parents to Kansas, settling near Ottawa and later coming to Chautauqua County where she has lived ever since.
Mrs. Buckles' life was one of unselfishness. She was recognized as on of the best early day teachers, having taught for twelve years. She was principal of the Sedan High School at the time of the first graduating class (18 unreadable).
On May 1, 1889 she was united in marriage to Alfred Yates Buckles. To this union four children were born, one daughter and three sons, who were all reared in Sedan, Kansas. The husband and two sons J. Buckles and Doyle Buckles preceded her in death.
At the time of her passing, Mrs. Buckles was a member of the Eastern Star and the First Christian Church where she was a teacher of the Loyal Women s Class. She was president for years of the Missionary Society of the Church, resigning about a year ago at the death of her son Doyle, who was an outstanding newspaper man and at the time of his death was at the head of the Journalism department of the University of Alabama, which position he had held for nine years.
She is survived by her daughter Mrs. Earnest Brunger, Mt. Pleasant, Utah, one son, Fred C. Buckles of Abilene, Texas, six grandchildren, one brother, Dr. Ed Fouts of Rygate, Montana, other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 5th at 4 P. M. at the First Christian Church with Rev. Joe Samuels officiating. The youth choir, assisted by Mrs. N. A. Banks sang several favorite hymns. Rev. Edwin O. Michael, Joplin, Mo., former pastor of the Sedan Christian Church paid a beautiful tribute to Mrs. Buckles.
Pall bearers were Messer's Floyd Casement, R. L. Harmon, Frank Harmon, C. L. Coker, E. A. Potter and A. E. Coover.\
Interment was in Greenwood cemetery under the direction of Buckles Funeral Home.
Out of town relatives attending the services were Mr. and Mrs. Earnest Brunger, Mt. Pleasant, Utah; Mr. and Mrs. Fred C. Buckles, Abilene, Texas; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Pile and daughter Dora Caroline of Scott City; Mr. and Mrs. Ed Pile of Winfield; Mr. and Mrs Gault and daughter Myrna of Oxford and close friends Rev. and Mrs. Edwin Michael and two children of Joplin, Mo.
She was buried at Greenwood Cemetery, Chautauqua County, Kansas.
