He was a farmer and a bus driver from 1956-1986 for Liberty Twp. and the Duneland School System. He was a WWII Army Veteran of the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of Charles Pratt Post 94 of the American Legion and a former Liberty Twp. Fire Department Volunteer.
Funeral services, American Legion Chaplain Darlene Strauch officiating, are scheduled at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bartholomew Funeral Home, Valparaiso. Interment will be at Chesterton Cemetery.
Visitation is scheduled from 4-8 p.m. Monday with a 7 p.m. memorial service of the Indiana Volunteer Fire Fighters Assoc. at Bartholomew Funeral Home.
Memorial donations may be made to Whispering Pines Nursing Home, Liberty Twp. Volunteer Fire Department or American Legion Charles Pratt Post #94 in Valparaiso.

Trustee, Harold Arthur Esserman, of Chesterton, died Wednesday, September 5, 2001, at the Water of Duneland Health Care Center. He was 87. Harold, a life long resident, retired in 1977 as Health Inspector of the Porter County Health Department. He was a former member of the Liberty Twp. Fire Dept; Liberty Twp. Trustee from 1958 to 1966. He also served on the Duneland School Board from 1969 to 1978. He served on the Porter County Plan Commission. He farmed all his life and was an avid snowmobiler. He served in the U.S. Army and was an Airplane Mechanic in Africa during WWII. He was born August 21, 1914 in Valparaiso, the son of Edward and Olive (Bull) Esserman, who preceded him in death. On February 6, 1949 in Chesterton, he married Lucielle Bleidung, who survives in Chesterton. He is also survived by a son Brian (Valerie) Esserman, of Liberty Twp; four brothers, Fred Esserman and Edward (Marjorie) Esserman, Jr., both of Valparaiso, Les Esserman and Robert Esserman, both of Chesterton; two sisters, Elma Bloomberg, of Fla., Louise (Tom) Speer, of N.Y; two grandchildren, Jamie Spencer-Esserman and Kristy Esserman, both of Liberty Twp. He was preceded also in death by a son, Terry Edward Esserman in 1969; a brother, Walter Esserman and a sister, Ruth Silk. Funeral services, Rev. Jerry W. Castelman officiating, are scheduled at 10a.m., Monday at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home. Internment will be at Greenwood Cemetery, Michigan City. Demmond, of Liberty Twp; seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild; two brothers, Robert Esserman of Fla; Edward Esserman of Valparaiso; two sisters, Louise Speer of Calif. and Alma Blomberg of Fla. and many nieces and nephews. The family then moved to the farm across from Liberty School. They farmed, raised animals and worked hard. Leslie graduated from Liberty Twp. High School in 1934. He continued to farm with the family and also started working at U.S. Steel in Gary, where he worked for over 33 years. He also worked at First National Bank in Valparaiso for 10 years as vault custodian. Leslie was a member of Porter County Farm Bureau and the Winamac Old Auto Club. Les and Anna were very involved in antique auto functions and tours throughout the United States. He was a Charter Member of Liberty Twp. Volunteer Fire Department, and just received his 50 Year Certificate and Gold Card. He helped save many lives during his time as a fireman. This work was very important to him, and when he was home from work and a call came, he always responded. It didn’t matter whether he had gotten any sleep the night before. He felt it was his responsibility to do whatever he had to do to help those in need. He was also a member of IVDA (Indiana Volunteer Firefighters Association). Leslie was a very humble man who was always willing to help anyone who needed help. He taught his children many skills they will never forget. He was a loving husband, caring father and grandfather. Funeral services, Pastor Al Marquez officiating, will be Tuesday, Aug. 30 at noon from White-Love Funeral Home, 525 S. 2nd St., Chesterton. Interment will be at Chesterton Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 10 a.m. until time of service at noon. Memorials may be given to Liberty Twp. Volunteer Fire Department. He was buried on 30. Aug. 2005 at Chesterton Cemetery, Chesterton, Porter County, Indiana.
