S.L. Crownover, senior member of the firm S.L. Crownover & Co.,was born in Rover in 1847, his parents, Henry T. Crownover andJanes (Briggs) Crownover, of South Carolina, came to Yell Countywith their parents prior to 1840, where they were married about1845, and located on a farm near Danville, where the father was accidentally Killed by a horse in 1859, the mother still living and residing in Texas. S.L. was raised on a farm and educatedin the common schools, and at the age of twenty began farmingfor himself, and in 1870 started merchandising at Bluffton,which he conducted for fourteen years: then was two years atBriggsville, where he was appointed postmaster, when he movedthe business to Rover , and carries a stock of $6,000., whichbrings in a trade of $12,000 annually, drawing customers fromall along the valley of the Fourche. His personal propertyconsists of a storehouse, 24 x 50, two dwellings in town, and1,200 acres of fine river bottom land with 350 cultivated andimproved, and it is all due to haard work and good management.he was married in1872 to Miss Nannie T. Burt, daughter of W.T.Burt, of South Carolina, and who has borne him eight children:Mary Ida, Sudney B. (deceased), John Wyatt (deceased), Ada Bell,Penelope May, Pearl Ladonia, Effie and William Leander. MrsCrownover is a member of the Methodist Episcapal Church andsocially he belongs to the A.F. & A.M., having joined RoverLodge No. 467 and politically is a stanch Democrat, doing all inhis power for its success, and has represented his State inconvention twice.
