     MARY CARSON:

CARSON. The first member of the family, of which Isaac and Cornelius Carson are honored representatives, emigrated from his native land,
Ireland, to America, and made a settlement in this county, taking out a patent for land in Fallowfield township over one hundred years ago.
Subsequently he traded a part of the original farm for a shot-gun, in order to induce a traveler who had the gun to settle near him in the
wilderness. He died on this property, which has been in the possession of the family ever since.

John Carson, his son, was born, reared and educated on the home place in Fallowfield township, and when a young man married Elizabeth Springer,
of the same locality. After marriage they settled on the homestead, where Mr. Carson carried on general farming and stock raising. Their
children were Mary (Mrs. Abraham Van Voorhis), Margaret (Mrs. Parker Carson), Elizabeth (Mrs. Noah Fry), John S. (father of subject), Sarah
A. (Mrs. H. Allman) and Caroline (Mrs. M. Hazen). The parents of this family both died on the home place, and lie side by side in the Speers
burying ground. They were members of the Speers Baptist Church; in politics Mr. Carson was a Democrat, and he held various township
offices.

Mary Carson was born on 17. Mar. 1816. She was the daughter of John Carson and Elizabeth Springer. Mary Carson married Abraham Frye Van Voorhis, son of Daniel Van Voorhis and Mary Frye, on 24. Mar. 1835. Mary Carson and Abraham Frye Van Voorhis appeared on the census of 22. Aug. 1850 at Carroll Twp., Washington County, Pennsylvania,

Death of Mrs. S.H. Burghardt

At 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon the spirit of Mrs. S.H. Burghardt passed over the dark river and into the realm of "Him who doeth all things well."
Just a week ago today she became ill of pneumonia and gradually became weaker as the dread disease continued and developed into what is termed "double pneumonia," which was combined with pleurisy. The constant attention of physicians, friends and reðVìŒ7latives served to relieve, but naught could succor.
Always kindhearted and tender, her sympathy for those in trouble was as unbounded as her love for friends, husband, children and home. Her life was one well worthy of imitation, and was syðVìŒ7nonymous with all that can be derived from those two cherished words "wife and mother."
Fannie Cart-Burghardt was born at Covington, Ky., December 22, 1849, and came to Colorado with her parents, who now reside near Golden, in 1863. She camðVìŒ7e to Rico in 1879, and has resided here continuously since that time. She was a consistent member of the Episcopal church and was a member of the "Seventy Niners" association of this city and the order of the Macabees. She was married in this cðVìŒ7ity in 1881 to S.H. Burghardt, and as a result of that marriage, one daughter and two sons survive her. By a former marriage, she is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Geo. M. Law, of Greely, and Mrs. R.P. Heyer, of this city.
To her aged pareðVìŒ7nts, her brother, R.N. Cart, and those who were recipients of her affections as wife, mother and sister the sympathy of a grieved community goes out.
The funeral will be held from the family residence and church at 2:30 o'clock Monday afterðVìŒ7noon and will be under the direction of the Macabees.

Article from the Apache County Critic newspaper, February 24, 1887

A TERRIBLE FATE

Mrs. James Cart and Her Two Children Get LostðVìŒ71 on Their Way Home from Carrizo Station, and are Found Dead Near the Petrified Forest.

One of the most appalling calamities that we have ever been called upon to record has fallen upon our neighbor, Mr. James Cart, whose home was situated someðVìŒ71 six miles east from Carrizo station, on the Atlantic and Pacific railroad, and from which he was absent, being engaged in looking after his stock to the western part of the county. Messengers reached him and he departed Holbrook on Sunday lasðVìŒ71t.

It appears that Mrs. Cart, with her two infant children, respectively a boy about 2 years and a girl 5 years of age had left her home on Friday last with a wagon and team to visit some friends at Carrizo station, at which place she made herðVìŒ71 visit, tarrying till between 4 and 5 ouclock, p.m., when she started with her two little ones, by the same conveyance, for her own residence - for a place, alas, it must be written, that mother nor her little ones were ever to again to behold.ðVìŒ71

On Saturday afternoon, couriers from Carrizo station reached Holbrook with the startling information that Mrs. Cart and the children, when nigh their home, had missed or left the road leading to the home and had taken one leading to the petriðVìŒ71fied forest; that a search that morning had shown that when about four miles from the place of divergence, the lost woman had taken from the wagon one of the horses and made the remaining one fast to the wagon wheel. It appears that with her cðVìŒ71hildren she then mounted and rode on until the trail was lost by the searchers.

The citizens of Holbrook were at once aroused to a degree of the most intense feeling. The relation of this dire disaster spread with the rapidity of an electric ðVìŒ71current, and volunteers from among all classes of citizens - merchants, (unreadable), and rangemen everywhere presented themselves to search the country for the recovery of the lost ones. Men, determined and energetic started without delay, soðVìŒ71me mounted and other in vehicles. The towns of Woodruff and Navajo contributed from her people men who knew the country and all that forethought, energy and duty could devise was done to rescue the wanderer and the little ones.

On Sunday the ðVìŒ71field was covered by the anxious party; every acre of plain to valley and mesa, were explored; every canon and rocky cave within reach was searched, and the day passed with only the discovery that the object had passed over the ground. Little ðVìŒ71articles of wearing apparel was found; a little shoe in one place, a childus stocking hung upon a bush in another; a garment of her own thrown out as if to guide the searchers and direct their course.

The party scattered in all directions and ðVìŒ71were encouraged by the evidence continually opening up that they must soon fall in with the sufferers or discover the place where an eternal sleep had given them rest from their wonderings. At nightfall on Sunday the horse upon which the motheðVìŒ71r had taken her little ones was found at the edge of a rocky cliff overlooking the valley of the Puerea, and from which place the section house at Carrizo station was plainly visible.

This point must have been reached by Mrs. Cart on Saturday ðVìŒ71afternoon and the sight of a human habitation determined her to made the descent, even among those rocks, with the hope of finding succor. Worn, weary, hungry and cold, she abandoned the animal that had brought her to this the first sight of pðVìŒ71rospective relief during the forty-eight hours she had wandered. Down this terrible steppe she made her way, guiding or carrying the children, until the plain below was nearly reached. Arriving, terribly bruised in body, at a large flat rock,ðVìŒ71 she sat down to rest and to rest her infants. The little boy was placed to her breast, while the little girl sat down close to the side of her mother. Here tired nature gave way and death came to their relief.

Robert Cart Caught Between CAge and Shaft Timbers is Killed Instantly. Inquest Will be Held This Evening

Robert N. CArt met a terrible death yesterday morning about 10:30 in the shaft of the Golden Cycle Minig Company. Cart was being raised to the surface from the 12th level of the mine and had two rails on the cage with him which he was going to have cut off before being placed in the drift where he had been working. In some manner the rails became lðVìŒ7Yoose from their fastening on the cage and the ends of them came in contact with the shaft timbers, the jar thus caused knocked Cart off his feet and before he could recover himself he fell between the cage and the shaft timbers and his life wasðVìŒ7Y crushed from his body in a twinkling. Cart is 42 years of age and has been in the district for the past five years and has followed mining all of hte time. He is survived by a wife and one child, a girl 5 years of age, the family lived on DeðVìŒ7Ywey Avenue between First and Second streets. The dead man was a member of the local lodge A.O.U.W. which order will have charge of the funeral. The Coroner was notified soon after the accident and after some investigation he decidede to hold ðVìŒ7Yan inquest which will be held in the undertaking rooms of the Hall Undertaking Company thiss evening at seven o'clock. The accident of yesterday was the third serious accident that has befallen Mr. Cart in the past two years. One year ago lasðVìŒ7Yt Jan. a large piece of machine steel struck him on the head after falling a distance of 20 feet in the same shaft in which he was killed. The result of that accident was a fractured skull and for awhile it was thought he would die. Last JuneðVìŒ7Y a premature explosion blew out one of Mr. Carts eyes. This accident also happend while he was working in the Golden Cycle.

Mr. Cart was an old time Rican, having lived here 15 years prior to his going to Victor. He was an expert miner and hðVìŒ7Yis service were always in demand. His many friends here most sincerely mourn his loss for he was universally liked and respected for his manly dignity and sterling integrity. the news gbut wxpresses the sentiment heartfelt sympaty to his sorrðVìŒ7Yowing friends.
