Burial service for Lieutenant Colonel Ralph J. Canine, Jr., U. S. Army (Ret.), 76, will be held at Arlington Cemetery on Tuesday, April 2, 2002 at 9 a.m. He was the oldest son of the late Lieutenant General Ralph Julian Canine, U.S. Army (Ret.) and Ruth Wiscomb Canine.
Colonel Canine was born in Manila, Philippines, where his father was stationed, on November 9, 1925 which was his father's birthday. Colonel Canine died in Columbia, South Carolina on March 8, 2002 also the same day as his father.
He was a 1949 graduate of the University of South Carolina. A veteran of World War II, he had a long and distinguished career in the U.S. Army, retiring in 1969. He began an equally successful career in Development and Fund Raising first at the University of Richmond, followed by 15 years at USC, retiring in 1987. He was a member of Forest Lake Presbyterian Church and a long time supporter of USC.
Surviving are his wife of 49 years Elizabeth W. Canine; sons, William R. Canine of Alpharetta, Georgia, and David W. Canine of Pawleys Island, South Carolina, four grandchildren, and a brother, Edwin A. Canine of Crofton, Maryland.
