Abraham Buckles Died on Sunday

Abraham C. Buckles, a lifelong resident of Mount Pulaski township, Logan County, Illinois, and a well-known farmer, died at his home over four miles southwest of Mount Pulaski at 3:35 a.m. Sunday, September 5, 1937, aged 69 years, 6 months, and 29 days. Mr. Buckles had been in failing health for many months, but his last serious illness was only of a few days duration.

Decedent was born on February 6, 1868, in the vicinity southwest of Mount Pulaski, where he always resided, being the youngest child of Jeremiah and Mary Copeland Buckles, pioneer residents of this community. While always interested in the activities of farm life, Mr. Buckles found much enjoyment in trap-shooting, and was well known for his great success in this sport for a number of years.
On January 30, 1895, he was united in marriage with Miss Laura Drobisch of Mount Pulaski. To this union two sons were born; Vernon, who preceded his father in death a number of years ago, and Russell Buckles of Mount Buckles.

Besides his wife and son, Mr. Buckles is survived by three grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Martha Scroggin of Chicago; two brothers, John A. Buckles and Assessor P. W. Buckles, of Mount Pulaski. The following sisters and brothers preceded him in death: Mrs. W. B. Mitchell, Mrs. Sarah Ellen Turley, Mrs. William Mann, Robert, William R., and Jeremiah S. Buckles, and an infant brother.

Mr. Buckles was a member of the Mount Pulaski Christian Church, where funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 7, conducted by the pastor, Rev. J. Wayne Staley. Two songs, "In the Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross", were sung by Mrs. Everett Beidler and Frank E. Turley, with accompaniment by Mrs. Turley. The interment was in Steenbergen Cemetery, four miles southwest of the city. The pallbearers were John and Harvey Davis, George and Claude Bowers, and James and William Follis.

The remains were removed to the Hershey Funeral Home in Mount Pulaski, and Monday evening were returned to the family home.

He was buried at Steenbergen Cemetery, Mount Pulaski, Logan County, Illinois.

In the will of Robert Buckles I, he wills land to the "three" sons of Abraham who is deceased, so we know that Abraham was dead before 1789 and that he had three sons - (1) John (2) Robert (3) Abraham & (4) Ann

Following the close of the Revolutionary War many of the people of Virginia left that state and settled in Indiana, Illinois, Tennessee, and Ohio. Abraham and his family however, remained in the South and a large number of his descendants now live in Virginia, Tennessee and other southern states. . . . There are a number of the name in east Tennessee, south-western Virginia, Kentucky, and central Illinois who are descendants of either Abraham, Robert, or William.

CRAIN FUNERAL HELD SUNDAY

Rev. Carroll Fairbanks Conducts Service in Ripley Christian Church

Last rites for Mrs. Addie L. Crain, 91-year-old pioneer resident of Payne county were held Sunday afternoon in the Christian church at Ripley.
Rev. Carroll Fairbanks, pastor of the First Christian church of Cushing, conducted the service and was assisted by Rev. Wilber Johnson, pastor of the Ripley Christian church.
Mrs. Dale J. Anderson sang "Ivory Palaces" and "Beautiful Isle" and Miss Kay Robertson played the piano accompaniment.

Pallbearers were Fred Ballard, S. Williamson, Faye Fogleman, John A. Thompson, Herbert Stoupe and Allen W. Williamson.

Mrs. Crain was born at Mt. Pulaski, Illinois, on July 18, 1861. She married Charles Crain in February 1880 and the couple came to Oklahoma in 1894, settling near Perkins. One year later they moved to a farm seven miles west of Cushing on highway 33 where she lived until 1948 when she sold the farm. She has since been living in a rest home.

She died in a Stillwater rest home early Saturday morning following an illness since last November. She was a member of the Christian church at Ripley and was a life member of the Ripley Eastern Star. She served as chaplain of the Eastern Star at Ripley for 15 years.

Relatives who survive are three granddaughters, Miss Caralee Crain of Cushing, Miss Corinne Crain of Oklahoma City, Mrs. Marcella Grant living in Kentucky; four grandchildren and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her husband November 16, 1938 and was also preceded in death by two sons and one daughter. The burial, under direction of the Davis Funeral Home, was made in the Ripley cemetery on the family lot.

She was buried at Ripley Oak Park Cemetry, Payne County, Oklahoma.

FUNERAL SERVICES SUNDAY FOR PIONEER RESIDENT OF
SEDAN AND CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY
August 20, 1932

Alfred Yates Buckles, well known pioneer citizen of Sedan and CHAUTAUQUA county, Kansas, died at St. Mary's hospital in Winfield, Kansas, Saturday morning, August 20th, aged 71 years. His death resulted from pneumonia following a surgical operation performed a week previous.

Funeral services were held at the Christian church in Sedan, Kansas, at 2:30 P. M., Sunday, August 21, conducted by Rev. Edwin G. Michael. Interment was made in Greenwood cemetery with burial service of the Masons order conducted at the grave. Music for the funeral service was furnished by a male quartet composed of Norman Frye, H. W. Loomis, Fred Loyd and R. L. Harmon, with W. H. Dennis at the piano. Pallbearers were W. H. Sproul, Carl Ackerman, John Dalton, R. O. Robbins, Edgar J. Fisher and C. W. Spencer.
He was buried at Greenwood Cemetery, Chautauqua County, Kansas.

Andrew Buckles

Andrew Buckles died at his home, three miles southeast of Mt. Pulaski 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 19, 1907, aged 79 years. He had been hopelessly ill for eight months, having had a stroke of paralysis last November. He had been in the care of a trained nurse for twenty-five weeks. In Health, Mr. Buckles weighed 240 pounds, and at the time of his death he weighed about 120 pounds. His wife preceded him in death March 3, 1894. Two of his seven children survive him - Robert E. and Henry S. Andrew Buckles was born in Mt. Pulaski and spent his life there. In his early life he was an enthusiastic hunter, keeping a pack of greyhounds and often capturing three and four deer a day as well as many wolves and wild turkeys. After 1856, deer hunting was a thing of the past and he became a successful and devoted bee hunter, finding an average of six to eight trees per year. In politics Mr. Buckles was a staunch Republican.

Funeral services were at the Christian church in Mt. Pulaski at 2 o'clock Wednesday, Aug. 21, conducted by Rev. D. A. Lindsay. Interment was in Steenbergen Cemetery.

He was buried at Steenbergen Cemetery, Mount Pulaski, Logan County, Illinois.
