Mrs. M.K.V. Kouwenhoven, Ancestors Settled Here in 1660
Mrs. Mary Kate Voorhees Kouwenhoven, formerly of Gravesend, whose ancestors settled here in 1660, died yesterday in a Long Island nursing home at 84. She was the widow of Charles W. Kouwenhoven, descendant of another of Brooklyn’s oldest families.
Born in the old Town of Flatlands, Mrs. Voorhees joined the Flatlands Dutch Reformed Church early in life. She and Mr. Kouwenhoven moved to Gravesend after their marriage.
Her husband, manager of Voorhees Grain and Feed Company, died in 1936. Their only child, Ella Kouwenhoven, died in 1917 at the age of 21, the day before she was to receive a diploma as a kindergarten teacher.
Mrs. Kouwenhoven is survived by a niece, Cornelia Lott, and a nephew, John Voorhees Lott.
Private funeral services are to be held Tuesday afternoon at the home of Miss Lott, 4021 Quentin Road, with the Rev. Stanley S. Slingerland, pastor of Flatlands Church officiating. Burial will be in Green-Wood Cemetery.
