Susan Elizabeth Vandivier was born in 1844 at Kentucky. She was the daughter of
Aaron Vandivier and
Elizabeth Vanfleet. Susan Elizabeth Vandivier married
Samuel B Huff on 29. Nov. 1870 at Mercer County, Kentucky. Susan Elizabeth Vandivier died in 1894. The parents for Susan have been puzzling. Here are the arguments for them being Aaron Vandivier and Elizabeth Vanfleet, md 19 Apr 1827 in Mercer Co, KY.
First, the marriage record to Sam Huff lists her as Elizabeth so that we need to be looking for someone that is either called Susan or Elizabeth. Second, the marriage record shows the bondsman as Aaron Vandivier, so that he must be a close relative, maybe her father. When we go to the 1880 census for the Sam Huff household we find Susan as age 30 and her mother Elizabeth as age 81 and born KY. I've looked hard at the 1860 census for Mercer for a Susan or Elizabeth that would be born 1850 but found none. However, the 1860 census for the household of Aaron Vandivire shows him with his wife Elizabeth, age 60, born NJ and dau Elizabeth age 16. The 1850 and 1870 censuses are consistent with this for Aaron. The things that support this child Elizabeth as being the Susan that we are after is that (1) Her father is Aaron, the bondsman. (2) Her name Elizabeth is the one used in the marriage. (3) Her mother is named Elizabeth and is the right age for the wife of Aaron. (4) They were in Mercer where the Huffs were all the time. The things that are against this Elizabeth being our Susan are that she was apparently 6 years older than that given in the 1880 census and in that census her mother is given as born KY rather than the NJ for the wife of Aaron. Seing the number of things that can be wrong with censuses, and especially ages, I think that the evidence strongly supports Aaron as the father of Susan/Elizabeth. Aaron md Elizabeth Vanfleet in 1827 just one year before the birth of the oldest child in the household of Aaron as shown in the 1850 census, indicating that Aaron's wife Elizabeth in the census really is Elizabeth Vanfleet.
