It also been written that John was a Brigidier General, the son of Dr. John Neilson and Johanna Coejemans. A biography of W. Averell Harriman says John was on the staff of General George Washington and later served in the Continental Congress for New Jersey. He may also have been known asa merchant in New York City.

He was a 75 year old Physician, worth $50,000 and born in New Jersey. Along with he and Abigail were children Mary, Charles and Henry, along with six Irish servants, including a 12 year old girl. John died at 726 Broadway. John owned Vault #40 at the Marble Cemetery in New York City where many of the family are buried. Yet, his body was moved to New Brunswick, NJ in 1905. Was John born in Somserset County?
