Albert Samuel Moody and Nancy Jane Mathews appeared on the census of 13. Jun. 1900 at Erie Twp., Neosho County, Kansas,
; 7 children, 6 living. Everyone thinks they were buried at Bethel Cemetery in Neosho County. (I am sure I found their stones there in 1945 but have been unable to find them lately. It is possible that their stones were shattered by the tornado which hit the cemetery in 1947 that they could not put together again.) I believe all their children were born in Hancock County, Illinois. In Rebecca Jane (Moody) Sherrill’s obituary I found what Albert and Nancy came to Kansas in 1859 but were so disappointed in the prospect that they returned again to Illinois. Eight years later, after other members of the family migrated to Neosho County, they, too, came to Osage Mission (St. Paul). Their claim, near where the little village of Brent used to be, was in Section 23 of the Walnut Grove Township. This is about 4 miles north of St. Paul. Albert Moody was lame. He suffered a bad siege of Erysipelas (this is a severe streptococci infection) which settled in one leg. This may be one reason why he did not serve in the Civil War. It also hampered his farm work. Albert and Nancy reared two grandchildren, Stella and Albert Shoemaker, whose mother died.

Amey Ellen Moody was also known as Amy Ellen Moody. Amey Ellen Moody was born on 25. Jan. 1866 at Plymouth, Hancock County, Illinois. She was the daughter of Zadock Moody and Sophia Cain. Amey Ellen Moody married John Kerr, son of Kanes Kerr and Katherine Root, on 24. Jan. 1886 at Science Hill School House northwest of, Walnut, Crawford County, Kansas; by Rev. J. M. Lanson of the Baptist Church. Amey Ellen Moody died on 6. Jan. 1930 at Kinsley, Edwards County, Kansas, at age 63. AMY ELLEN MOODY KERR

Amy Ellen Moody was born near Plymouth, Hancock County, Illinois on January 25, 1866 and passed quietly from this life as day was breaking, January 6th, 1930.

She was the second child of a family of eight children.

Two sisters, Mrs. Ronnie (Tabitha) Wade of Kinsley and Mrs. Dollie Hamilton of Pamona, California, and three brothers, C. M. Moody of Copeland, Kansas, George of Dodge City, Kansas, and Dick Moody of Kinsley, Kansas, survivors, Mrs. Josephine Greenwell, a sister, and R. E. Moody, a brother, preceded her in death.

Her girlhood was spent in Crawford County, Kansas and on January 24, 1886 she was married to John Kerr. To this union four children were born: a daughter, Hessie Sophia Kerr, who died at the age of ten years, and three sons, Robert Z. and J. Fell of Dodge City and J. Harold of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Mrs. Kerr also mothered a niece, Ruby Kerr. Ruby came into Mr. and Mrs. Kerr’s home at the age of five years and years of the love and devotion made her one of the family. After growing to womanhood Ruby’s health began failing and again she was brought home to be cared for by Mrs. Kerr in her illness.

In 1893, Mr. and Mrs. Kerr came to Edward County, Kansas and made their home on the Edwards ranch until 1913, when they moved to Kinsley. Soon afterward her companion was taken from her.

Her life was lived for the service of humanity and in sickness or trouble she was always there to lend a helping hand. She loved the out-of-doors and could always see God’s face in flowers. She was a member of the Baptist Church until coming to Kinsley when she affiliated with the Methodist Church where she remained a faithful member until her death. She was a charter member of the Royal Neighbors and her life was a beautiful teaching of Fraternity. Seldom do we find a life so filled with service and so nobly lived for others.

The devoted mother will be sadly missed by the children and eight grandchildren, together with a host of friends.

Noble friends are a pledge to the Noble God, and the future. True friends, nor death nor speaking fate can divide.

The funeral services for Mrs. Kerr were held at the Methodist Church, Tuesday at 2:30 o’clock in the presence of many friends who paid their last tribute of respect to the departed.

The music was given by a quartet composed of Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Rankin, Mrs. Edith Gere, and George Ott, with Mrs. Joe Vang at the piano. The pall bearers were Messers, A. E. Buxom, Joe Vang, Charles Anderson, Hugh Oliphant, Leo Croft, and Charles Hatfield, and interment took place in the Kinsley Cemetery where Mr. Kerr and the daughter, Hessie and Mrs. Ruby Kerr Jones are buried.

She was buried at Kinsley, Edwards County, Kansas.

     D. L. Craig Moody was born on 12. Mar. 1915 at Kinsley, Edwards County, Kansas. He was the son of Robert E. Lee Moody and Ida Kreg. D. L. Craig Moody died on 21. Nov. 1942 at Cabanatuan Japanese prisoner of war camp at age 27. The following article concerning him was contributed by his sister, Marjorie Wunsc.

“Staff Sergeant D. L. Craig Moody was born March 12, 1915 in Kinsley, Kansas. At the age of four, his family moved to their farm three miles north of New Albany, Kansas.

After the death of his father, Robert E. Lee Moody, in 1924, the family moved to Fredonia where D. L. attended the city school. He united with the First Methodist Church when a small boy. In 1926, the family moved to Wichita, Kansas. D. L. attended East High and later was employed with the Central Wallpaper and Paint Company.

D. L. joined the First Nazarene Church in Wichita where he was very active in the work with the young people, and was already to help his sister, Marjorie, in the Primary Department when needed. He was assistant Scout Master of Troop 51.

In 1937, D. L. enlisted with the U. S. Army, and was stationed at Fort Riley for three years. InDecember of 1940, he re-enlisted in the service of his country. June 29, 1941, he bid farewell to the members of his family, for the last time, as in July, 1941, Staff Sergeant D. L. Moody was transferred to Westover Field, Chicopee Falls, Mass., as a member of Company B, 803rd Engineers. On October 4, 1941, he sailed from San Francisco, for the Philippine Islands and was stationed at Fort Stotsenburg, Clark Field, Luzon, where on April 7, 1942, they were bombed by the Japs at the same time that Pearl Harbor was attacked.

Staff Sergeant Moody was married to Elaine Nelson of Wichita, Kansas on December 21, 1940, and to this union an infant son, Larry Douglas McArthur, was born February 2, 1942, who lived only a few days. Because of the serious invasion of the Japs in the Philippines, Sergeant Moody never lived to know that he was the father of a son, as interchange of mail was impossible.

In December of 1942, the U. S. Government received word that Staff Sergeant Moody was a prisoner of the Japs, and July 16, 1943, the Government reported he had died in a Japanese Interment Camp, but the truth was that Staff Sergeant Moody had departed this life on November 21, 1942 at the age of 27 years, 8 months and 9 days, in the Jap Prison Camp of Cabanatuan, where 2800 other Americans paid the supreme price.

Sergeant Toby, one of the 511 who were rescued by the Rangers, January 30, 1945, from this prison camp, while recovering from his dreadful experiences, in the Fitzsimmons General Hospital, Denver, told his wife and sister, Marjorie, that he cared for Sergeant Craig, as they called him, in the so called prison hospital and made special effort to secure food for him from the Japs, but he refused to eat knowing that he couldn’t live and the words of Sergeant Toby, ‘He died like a man for his country.’

Staff Sergeant Moody is survived by his mother, Ida L. Moody Jury, 721 Volutsia, two sisters, Marjorie Gilchrist, 1131 South Market, Felcie Hill, 1046 South Saint Francis, and one brother, R. Lee, all of Wichita and many other relatives and friends.”.
