A story that Aaron and John were playing in the woods one day about 1803 when Indians came along. Aaron was up a tree and was captured by the Indians and taken away to the area around Lake Michigan. Several years later a traveler stopped by the parents cabin and told them of a Caucasian boy living with the Indians. The father, Aaron Lane, went up north and bartered for the boy, who didn't want to leave with his father but eventually did. The boy retained many of his Indian habits and was called "Indian Pete." He was said to have married and lived back in the woods. Another source says that Aaron was never found. This story is from Frank P. Lane, who heard it from his grandfather, Abraham Crum Lane in 1894. Have letter from Frank.

According to manuscript notes, Aaron was tried and expelled from his church for his anti-slavery stand, after which most other Lanes also withdrew. (possible this refers to this Aaron's father, but dates given are for this Aaron) The Lanes worked under Levi Coffin, a Quaker from Cincinnati, in helping with the underground railroad. Their house, at Hamilton and Mill, was a stop on the RR.
One source says Jan. 6 as birth date, but gravestone and most sources give June 6.

     Aaron Lane was also known as Arie Lane. Aaron Lane was born c 1719. He was the son of Mathias Lane Sr. and Antje Schenck. Aaron Lane married Sarah Covenhoven, daughter of Joris Covenhoven and Altje Cornelisz Luyster, on 17. May. 1743 at Middletown, Monmouth County, New Jersey.
Aaron Lane left a will on 3. May. 1802 at Readington, Hunterdon County, New Jersey.

mentioned his two sons Mathias and George (Joris) and eight daughters.

He died in 1805 at White House, Hunterdon County, New Jersey. His estate was proved on 7. May. 1805.

     Aaron Lane was born on 17. Apr. 1753 at Bedminster, Somerset County, New Jersey. He was the son of Matthias Lane and Elizabeth Sutphen. Aaron Lane died on 12. Nov. 1823 at Troy, Rensselaer County, New York, at age 70. Aaron did not marry. He went about 1789 or a little later, from Bedminster to Lansingburg, then above Troy, but now a part of the latter city, and engaged in mercantile business with his young brother, Col. Derick, the firm being A. & D. Lane. The business being successful, they removed to Troy about 1798, and later erected several mercantile buildings. Aaron was treasure of Rensselaer Co. 1791-1800, village assessor in 1800, and village trustee in 1802; was a man greatly respected.

Aaron Lane married Sarah Van Dorn, daughter of Aaron Van Doren and Gessje Schenck, on 17. Dec. 1787. Aaron Lane married Elizabeth Carnahan, daughter of William Carnahan and Mary Schmidt, on 28. Aug. 1800.
Aaron Lane left a will on 14. May. 1842 at Hamilton County, Ohio. He died on 1. Dec. 1845 at Springdale, Hamilton County, Ohio, at age 82. He was buried a 1. Dec. 1845 at New Burlington Cemetery, Hamilton County, Ohio. His estate was proved on 10. Jan. 1846 at Hamilton County, Ohio. "Aaron Lane, Sen. Sarah his wife, with their children Catherine, Elenor, Aaron, John, Elizabeth and Nancy left Somerset County, N.J. at a point on Lamerton Creek near the site of the Church bearing the same name [Lamerton Church] in the fall of 1797, with an oxteam, two horses and two milch cows, household goods, tools, etc., crossed the mountain country to a point on the Ohio River (called Buffalo, I think), where the family wintered in a cabin. During winter father built his own boat, sold his oxen and early in the spring took aboard several other families and started for La Sontaville, now Cincinnati, where we landed sometime in March 1798.

Stopped at old man Avery's at the foot of Main Street Hill, and from thence made our way up the Mill Creek valley through the then unbroken forest to near the present site of Springdale thence west three miles, thence south two miles to the northwest corner of section 28 Springfield Township Hamilton County, Ohio. Grandfather Aaron Van Doren up to about that date having been the owner of said section and also Sec. 27 directly South [East], having purchased the same of Judge Symmes or his agents about 1790.

During the winter of 1798 and 1799 the family purchased timber for a house, raised the same and in early summer moved into what was said to be the best hewed log cabin in Springfield Township. And here we have had our plain but pleasant and comfortable house for 82 years. Ending June 4th 1880."

"His earnest determinations were to conquer, and the mighty oaks soon yielded to his strong arm, and waving fields of grain told that his intensions had been fully executed." (Hist. of Hamilton Co., p.367) The Lane's along with the Carnahans, founded the New Burlington Church, built in 1816 (see photo). It never had a resident pastor, but was served by circuit riders.

Aaron's will is located in the rare book dept. at the Univ. of Cincinnati. Left his farm to his youngest son Garret, who continued to live there. Gave other lands to his other sons John and William and his wife Elizabeth. Mentions seven daughters and four sons.

Aaron Lane family kept a bible which is supposed to be in the Cincinnati Historical Society, but could not be found in March 2002. Records from this are taken from web page that transcribes the records from this bible, based on record made by researcher Marie Dickore.

A newspaper clipping in the Aaron Lane bible says he died at Ludlow Station (just south of Mt. Healthy), where Mrs. Josephine C. Ludlow died the same day.

According to Barbara Johnson: "A.C. left home at 17 and entered a three-year apprenticeship as a wagonmaker. He went into business for himself for seven years at Mt. Pleasant, OH, then five years at Darrtown, OH. In April 1852 he bought a farm in Tippecanoe Co., IN and remained there until August 1864, when he sold the farm and moved to Big Creek Tp in White Co., IN."
