James Kipp was born on 15. Oct. 1844 at Tappan, Rockland County, New York. He was the son of
William D. Kipp and
Elizabeth Banta.

He was left home to work in his brother Davids grocery store at Sparkill, NY in 1859. Was called home to take the place of his brothers John B. and Isaac, who had joined the Union army in Virginia. C Sep. 1862.
He was obtained a clerkship in the grocery house of Elbert Bailey, then at 18 Sixth Ave, N. Y. C. C 1865. He was entered the office of the Lorillard Insurance Company for three months. He then took a position with the New York Rubber Clothing Company at 347 Braodway, N. Y. C. This company combined with the Goodyear Rubber Company in July 1867. In 1869.
