CENSUS FILES

  • The Census material used in this site is from the official record of the US Census whenever possible .. source in Massachusetts has been the US Department of Commerce official US Census archives microfilm series reviewed at the Connecticut Valley Historical Society genealgical Library.
    For other states censuses (Maine) Scott M Connolly, the webmaster and genealogist here; has interimly relied on bona fide no-cost Census excerpts from persons on the internet as noted ..some of their sources include the LDS CD publication of the US Censuses.
  • The Canadian Prince Edward Island Census was consulted for 1841 & 1881; and is here .. searchable on line.
  • There is no available 1890 US Census remaining save a few scraps -- it was destroyed a fire in the US Commerce Department basement in the 1900's. Various replacement sources of that period are consulted - business directories; other records. A US 1890 Veteran's Census for that period exists.

  • Early US censuses only listed heads of household and their family by number, age and sex; and property ie. slaves (done to calculate the congressional representation).
  • The next public issuance of a US Census is April 2, 2002 for the year 1930. See NARA for details. It is a publically collected document of American life summarized after its taking, every 10 years by constitutional requirement [since 1790]; and released to the public -- al detailed returns after a reserved period for privacy.
