Wyndham

Wyndham ... is the name give to sevral conties in the United States, most certainly in New England; and also to several towns.
Its name drives from the old English town of Wyndoeham which is near modern (and ancient Norwich) in Norfolkshire; East Anglia. It joins a common use of old East Anglia Towns named after the old homes of 17th century English settlers - particularly in Massachusetts Bay Colony old Connecticut and other New England colonies:
Colchester, Yarmouth, Norwich, Coventry, Canterbury ..and so on.

Our English ancestors in the paternal Scott line of Owen Connolly via Sarah Scott encompasses the Scotts of Suffolk, the Hobarts/Hubberds of Wyndoeham; the Durgins and Pegrims of Suffolk; the Hales and so forth.
In my GGGG-GF Thomas Scott's time,the old Tolland County of Connecticut gave it land to the new Wyndham County; its settlers from East Anglia via Boston migrated nward in Connecticut and Massachuetts and Vermont creating Wyndham Conties and towns named Wyndham which track their historic migration.
Thomas Scott removed himself and his family to Vermont to take lands ther when Vermont was becoming settled in its southern areas .. once though part of Massachusetts but traded to Connecticut settlers in a border settling land swap. (Ethan Allen - one will learn - was raised in Litchfield County Connecticut.).
Once in Vermont Thomas Scott and his family, and five or more Hale familes from Wyndham County Connecticut - settled in the new town of Halifax and West Halifax (founded in 1761) and named the county Wyndham.
To its north another town was named Wyndham.
These were Connecticut people or descendants of them who brought their lives and culture to Vermont. Martialed for self-common-defense as Minute Men Militia .. and mainly Congregationalists --by then still called Separatists to distinguish themselves from the full Church of England - the established church & tax supported - begrudgingly tax supported by Congregationalists.

My GGG-GF Henry Scott was born in West Halifax in 1783 - 7 years before Vermont statehood. When he married, he travelled to North Yarmouth Maine -- another town named like Wyndham for that part of East Anglia where their forbears had been born; and also settled by the Wyndham ancestried Hobarts and Jones of Maassachusetts. GGG-GF Thoams Scott's son Henry Scott would marry GGG-GM Sarah Jones in 1807 and live in North Yarmouth.
Using this history and learning other East ANglian English ancestry - helped me trace this ancestry and make more sense of it. Don't confuse Halifax as a Tory center in the post-revolutionary war era by the way .. that Tory center was Halifax, Nova Scotia - where the British Army and Tories vacated themselves.
GGGG-GF Thomas Scott - hardly a Tory, was a Minute Man and the son of Connecticut and Vermont Pioneers, well aware of General Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys - and joined them to save his country, his home, and family -- and fought and defeated the British Army and General Burgoyne at the Battle of Bennington. They meant, with their tradition of public government meetings (Town Meetings) and Church Meetings to continue their self-government.
