As Maine & New England and American history buffs know
...Maine borders New Brunswick and Maien and Canada almo went to war ...or were always wary of resurgent British claims and settlers east and north and along Quebec. My anscestral Scotts were thought to have placed at least two or more generations of American Scotts along the eastern fronter from Calais to Lubec to Baileysville. Another Charles Scott married a Mary Alice Scott (whose son thought she was American born - unless we're on the wrong track --) from New Brunswick. Living a time in or near Calais many inter-related Scott familes Scottish, British, Irish & Canadian made frequent crossings -- there from St Stephen.
Our male Scotts - all American by census were classic Scott family & Maine settlers - stakeouts for American settlement and interest along the Canadian border -- ours evidently go: Henry Scott --> Henry M Scott [married Maine born Mary Alice Pegrim -- > Charles H Scott [married Mary Ann Durgin had two surviving daughters: Sarah & Mary Alice .. all Maine born. None were rich --- and land and territory being such .. Maine people staked a claim by living there against Canadian encroachment --though they obviously married them. (Aroostook War .. mild shooting with Canadians and Maine 'ers ultimately was settled by the Webster-Ashburton Agreement on the Maine New Brunswick border ... got along so well they settled the rest of the US Canadian border ..along its present lengths. |
