German May Family - Baden, Germany ---Boston
Scott M Connolly's German great great-grandfather Francis J. May was born in 1823 and emigrated from Baden, Germany where his parents were born; probably with his family. Whether permitted to emigrate or did so without permission (then needed from the German Confederation & Empire) is yet unknown. Believed to be from Karlsruhe area ... and would mesh with family reference that the Frankish May's to us were also affiliated with Alsace-Lorraine.
Francis J. May is listed below in a Ward 19 of the 1880 Boston Federal Census .. and may have affiliated with Holy Trinity Church (RC) in Boston ... His daughter Caroline is the USA born wife of PEI-Scottish 4th generation then to Boston .. blacksmith Daniel F. McCormack Ward 23 or 24. They are buried in Holyhood,Brookline Sachem Path lot 365 ... the Mays in Roxbury or West Roxbury (which became part of Brookline).
a Francis J May is in the Boston Directory in 1900, p1062 & 1905 p1239 at 1780 Centre opposite Beech .. and the May Family is in the 1850, 1860 & 1870 Census, in West Roxbury, Massachusetts - an immigrant German-American family.
Baden Wuttemberg Hesse Mecklinberg are parts of the old German Confederation & Empire's southern Catholic Frankish states .. Baden was once a Grand Duchy ..in and out of Napoleon's French Empire and borders France & Switzerland.
These May's shared German Boston with Herzigz, Sondheims, many others.
May is an old middle European name running also to the UK via the Dutch Lowlands -especially the once Spanish Catholic ones. Boston's English May's from the 17th century & later (to Worcester & Connecticut -1730's to Pres Bush's [like Boesch -Frankish form 'woodsman or of the forest'] English family) would not be directly related to these Mays.
Also 'Mai' in some places.

Editor note place of birth .. CA is for Canada, PE for Prince Edward island, CB Cape Breton, NS fro Nova Scotia etc USA is for America ... Listing for 'Adelia' is believed to be for "Bridgit Adelia [Adeline] Fitzmorris Baker' ---- wife of Francis J Baker - per Mass Vital Statistics Birth Certificate -Caroline May 1851 birth
Fitzmorrises who married the Mays are also in the 1850, 1860 & 1870 census indexes for Massachusetts - in Norfolk County-West Roxbury (future Brookline)
...Another Catherine Fitzmorris by 1850 is in Boston's 4th Ward. Some of the May's also extended south to Attleboro in the 1870 census.
Fitzmorris is an Anglo-Irish name from the Conquest and stamped the midlands to Dublin with a crossing at the Isle of Man (also a re-crossing by ferry to catch a boat at Liverpool to America). (Normans are French-Viking descendants like the conqueror)... and rejoin the Franco-Irish Connolly via the Connolly-McCormack marriage. (Franco-Norman should be noted as including 'latin' bloodlines.)

Daniel F. McCormack evidently took the Steamer from Georgetown, PEI or otherwise came to Boston ..[now seems to have worked a ship from PEI down] passing thorugh Dorchester - and established at least his first blacksmith shop at 523 Columbia Street near Mattapan in Grove Hill, Roxbury [Boston City Directory 1919] .. lived also in Dorchester & died in 1936 at Mattapan listed as a real estate businessman - but still owned the blacksmith shop at 523 Columbia St Grove Hil area [a 'horseshoer' in the 1919 Boston City Directory] .. and in the 1900 & 1905 directory ..Home also 3 Rill, Sagamore. [May also have played a marketing trick as blacksmith Dan'l McCormick at 10 Seminary 1900 Boston directory.] As for the real estate business? A John J McCormack also joins the directory on Tremont Street, a John H McCormack also a blacksmith ... and in 1905, that John McCormack realtor is a lawyer at 43 Tremont Street. Two Daniels McCormack follow: a son-1880 & a great-grandson - who died in 1984 (believed nephew of Daniel #2. One of Daniel McCormack's partner's was a brother who shares a 1906 photograph ... and possible Boston's McCormack Realty Group (records check in progress). [Boston City Directory - 1905 p1137 ] A modest, pious man .. he purchased land when he could -- buried his parents Michael [b 1812] & Margaret Catherine [b 1828] McCormack-McPhee (reversed sometimes) maybe at [Old] Mount Calvary Cemetery, Roslindale near present Franklin Park in Roxbury-Mattapan sections of Boston .. and purchased a plot No 365 Sachem Path in Holyhood Cemetery, Brookline-Newton, Ma.
[Scott M Connolly is descended from Scottish Roman Catholics - some of whom via his great-great -aunt Margaret MacNeil-Flavin's memory still spoke Gaelic -she was born in PEI in 1869 .. is buried in HolyHood - Brookline]
McCormack, his wife and three of his children are listed in the 1880 Boston Federal Census Ward 24 or 23. Aso there is his father-in law Francis J. May Ward 19. ... and in the 1841 PEI Census Lots 55 & 54
are his PEI McCormack family from which he came.

New Data Possible DF McCormack lineage
Michael McCormack b (CA PEI) 1812 dod
NB for genealogy fraud prevention & identity fraud census records for Canadians from Prince Edward Island are being purposely portrayed as CapeTown, SA ..ocasonally as Cape Breton ... the census abbreviation is CA PE (for Canada & Prince Edward)
For PEI'ers St John IS will always be Saint John Isle .. the old French name for Prince edward Island ... it is too frequently alongside the separately typed St John's for Newfoundland and tere will be corresponding passenger arrival lists and birthplaces. New Brunswick encompassed almost all of ST John New Brunswick entries ...with an NB ..... NS etc for Nova Scotia.
As to ggf McCormack's business - if it mattered, another McCormick blacksmith shop may have lured those seeking a Protestant McCormick. (ack's were frequently Catholics .. "ick"s helped re-people Ulster with loyalists) [10 Seminary Road, Boston 1905 City Directory]

McCormack Family Tree from Scotland to PEI to Boston-USA
Thanks to Island Register the McCormack lineage of my family, possibly, in part is here:
Daniel F.McCormack in bold print is noted here in PEI, farming, by 1870 he is in the Boston Census ...his older brother John is in the US Navy during the Civil War. Mary Ann McCormack Coggins is buried in b 1834 1889 (dead age 55) with her younger Danielr? -but the relationship is not yet known maybe a cousin in HolyHood, Brookline, Ma ...The war hero or veteran brings his younger brother to Boston? .. , the latter opens a blacksmith shop ..and they enter the Real Estate business. ... or perhaps from PEI to New York, then Boston?
http://www.islandregister.com/selkirk_settlers.html
McCormack married Miss Catherine McPhee, of Big Pond, Lot 45, Prince Edward Island. a daughter of Joseph and Jane (McLean) McPhee, the latter a daughter of Capt. Charles McLean, of the British army. To Mr. and Mrs. McCormack were born the following children, namely: Joseph, of San Francisco; John, who is in the United States navy; Charles; Peter, of San Francisco, California; James; Bennett. of New York City; Cenerus, of Brandon, Manitoba; Alexander, of Providence, Rhode Island: Daniel. who remains at home and is engaged in farming and fishing; Mary Ann, of Providence. Rhode Island, and Sarah Jane. at home.
The subject's paternal grandparents came from Uist, Inverness. Scotland, in 1772, and located first at French Fort, where they remained for six years. The McLeans, who are of Scottish nativity, emigrated to Prince Edward Island in 1803 on the ship "Polly." Angus McCormack was the father of the following children: Donald, the father of the subject; James; Michael: Joseph and John. Of these, Donald, the father of the subject, who was born in 1799 and who died in 1874, at the age of seventy-five years. settled at DeGross Marsh, Lot 54, while the others remained at Launching. The subject had one brother. Gregory. who was drowned in young manhood. Donald McCormack married Miss Sarah Macdonald a daughter of Donald Macdonald, of Launching, who was one of the first six settlers at that place, the company including Angus McCormack, the subject's grandfather. Angus Walker, Mr. McPhee, Donald and Roderick McDonald and a Mr. McCormack. a relative of Angus. They all came originally from South Uist, Scotland, and bought six hundred acres of land at Launching in a joint grant and worked it in common, clearing and tilling the soil. In subsequent years the property was divided by mutual deeds of grant." P&P, Pg. 601
Peter McCormack, another great-great uncle? resided in San Francisco -mid 19th Century. These McCormacks & McPhees and others developed the Launching & Georgetown in Lots 45-55 De Gross marsh etc..660 acres owned in fee simple. The crowding, and discovery of Boston brought them south to the USA.

Scott M COnnolly:
When I was younger, my grandmother -Anne Keefe McCormack referenced her father-in-law as a blacksmith who owned several blacksmith shops and invested in (bought) real estate. her mother told and showed me some of the area where he lived ..we drove along the Blue Hill Highway near a Wellington Hill Street [a crescent adjoining drive] house distantly .. and she'd say he owned property here, and into Hyde Park and Jamaica Way, as well as the house we passed in Mattapan.
The area now is a mix of single family homes, apartments and adjoins the Olmstead Emerald necklace. At the joinder of Brookline and Boston, one sees signs for Jamaica Way and Hyde Park. The area was developed at the end of the last century with the street cars. Blue Hlls beyond Franklin Park Zoo,and with various cemeteries are part of the Olmstead greenzone the Hills are part of the reservation for Boston drinking water supplies.
For non-Bostonians with a knowledge of San Francisco .. its development resembles that single family style which begins at West Portal.
John McCormack ...was real estate partner of Daniel F McCormack either alone or with cousins McCormack .. and had offices at 43 Tremont Street [later law offices] ..see the McCormack-May page ...
From a telephone directory about 1900 --
There is also a listing in Mattapan for a John J. McCormack; Phone: Milton 706-4.
Daniel F McCormack died in 1936 at his home in Mattapan ..and previously lived at 3 Rill Street, Sagamore.
D.F. McCormick (Dorchester horseshoer). No residence given, but the phone was listed as Dorchester 839-1.
Daniel F McCormack likely entered the USA ..January 28, 1868 intending to immigrate ... trade then was a seaman. See the passenger notes here.
And gggps .. his parents are buried in Roslindale:
Michael McCormack b1812-1898 m Margaret Ann or Catherine b.1828 [3?] d 1891
Graves in Old Calvary Cemetery Roslindale [West Roxbury, now Boston], Massachusetts: Range 145 Grave 34 Section 6
[A "John" born-1869 d1891 is also listed]
