Adelia Fitzmorris

Adelia Fitzmorris is my great-great grandmother. She was born about 1830 the daughter of John Fitzmorris in the Dublin area of Ireland. She and her family emigrated before 1844 to Boston and settled in West Roxbury where she met and married her German husband Francis May. Bfore Boston, her family may have lived too, on the Isle of Man .. also a ferry passage via Dublin to Liverpool. Fitzmorris is a very common name in thee Dublin area, and also on the Isle of Man; and is a French-Norman derivation .. meaning the ... son of someone from over the water .. fils de maries transformed to Fitzmorris. Their Norman ancestors arrived as Latinized French Vikings (the Normans) to Dublin & to Kerry with the Conquest in the 11th Century. By the referenced history noted below at "Local Ireland" ... the Fitzmaurice Family is a Norman-Irish Geraldine Family seated in County Kerry. Or family are believed to have left Kerry for Dublin-Isle of Man-Liverpool before emigrating to Boston about 1835-45. To be sired then and to sire were feudal rights .. church backed .. of the Lord .. the King or his Duke. Other name variations for Fitzmorris suggesting additional Spanish include "de mariscos". Our family has also spelled the name Fitzmaurice.

Adelia Fitzmaurice married German Catholic immigrant Francis May; their marriage is recorded in West Roxbury records; and had their first daughter in Brookline. That daughter Caroline, married Daniel Francis mcCormack .. Catholic Scottish-Canadian from PEI in Dorchester-Boston. Her brother or Uncle are mentioned in naturalization records for Boston .. she like many women, had no vote either way and did not pay for naturalization. She and Francis had eight children .. Francis had left boyhood farming in West Roxbury and became a baker. Her death record, for now, provided the name and birth place of her father John Fitzmorris. Other Fitzmorrises may have migrated from Boston to the Springfield-Holyoke area mid century after mills opened there.

She died in Brookline before the turn of the century. Adelia is an anglicized Christian Latin name intended to replace the more pagan viking or celtic Bridgid or Bridget. My Great Great Grandmother has records for her childens births with the same husband by both names -Bridget & Adelia, Delia & Adeline .. also her daughter Caroline May's marriage license.
