• Owen F Connolly [1921-1996] ..son of Josh A Connolly of Portland Maine. told son SMC that he remembered at least one of his his grandparents came over from Ireland as a young boy with his family ..from Lietrim area and that hhis grandfather grew up in Portland and he worked for the city of Portland.
  City Directories notes referenced, noted on the Connolly lineage page, or on this site, confirm Bryan Connolly as a teamster both privately, and later as a driver for the City of Portland. Varios census notes including 1880 note his grandparents [Bryan's parents] as Irish born and too his wife McGowans.
  An 1858-59 directory listing notes a teamster [a horse-drawn wagon driver] Bernard Connolly in Portland, Maine ..which (only by inference of introduced trade of work and time) could be Bryan Connolly's father.
• Joseph A.Connolly mentioned by relation as keeping or visiting a woman's house in Somerville, Ma. [cf those Connollys]
• Sarah Scott Connolly (scott m connolly's grandmother) .Nana- told him in explanation, that her first son was named Joseph A. Junior ..but that he died as an infant. To continue the name and to honor her first born, her second son Joseph is named Joseph Augustus[ive] Connolly II or 2d. In the Portland City Directory for 1907, Joseph A. Connolly has closed his PortlandCumberland Place/Ave offices and moved to Warren, O.[Ohio presumed or Ontario?] .. Joseph & Sarah were married in Portland in 1906. ... [birth & rdeath record check for Joseph Jr - Ohio, Florida]
• Edward & Agnes Connolly
  19th Century Hampden County, Massachusetts land records list an Edward & Agnes Connolly as landowners --separately & jointly? The Hampden County records die out post 1860... Also possibly some lisiting in Franklin & Hampshire County. Franklln County Probate will also list Joseph P & Agnes Connolly --which Connolly (20th century) relate to Connolly's in West Haven Connecticut ---
  The California Land Records -San Francisco & Voting records ... Vera Tract Land Records San Francisco County -- list property owned separately by an Edward Connolly & Agnes Connolly ...they owned after 1845, land at the junction of Larkin St & Eddy St (that corner) ... their property was sold to the Archdiocese of San Francisco after the 1906 fire & quake ... which then sold it sub-divided to the builders of two or more 1912 era still existent apartment buildings. Vera Tract & old voting records, hard-bound and saved from the fire, are in the Hisory & rare books room at San Francisco Public Library..[casually known as the Tenderloin - but does not today truly characterize the neighborhood at those streets (maybe 1 or 2 massage parlors & 2 bars in the blocks adjoining]

  By coincidence --Scott M Connolly lived at an apartment 2 years at 556 Larkin Street in one those buildings. [learned a year after living there in a trace of land history - other Hampden County records discovered after a return from California]. [Found the apartment, a vacancy, from a listing at the owners other business - a laundromat he patronized]
  Voting & census? records ... note Edward as a 'bookbinder' from Massachusetts with a shop on Sansome Street, maybe Kearney Street ... near Portsmouth Square .... and he had an apprentice named 'Michael' from Ireland. Agnes was also listed as from Massachusetts at the Larkin Street address - no occupation given.
• Scott M Connolly' s grandfather Joseph A.Connolly may have had business contacts in Oakland, CA & elsewhere in the Bay Area or North West via Continental Can Corporation etc in the paper & boxboard business. (See Connolly Forum -under California)
• Joseph A Connolly born 1880 in Portland, Maine had an office listing in 1906 on Cumberland Ave in Portland, Maine as an electrical engineer [sic Portland City Directory-1906 consulted April 19, 2001 Portland, Maine].
  Owen F Connolly told SMC that his father and mother moved for his paper and boxboard mill business in the first years and that they had also lived in northern Florida .. and that his father had had a few patents for electric-mechanical processes ..ie probably for the paper and box making machinery. [A patent search can disclose his and anyone's historical patents --they are likely outmoded now].
  The family moved back to Massachusetts (Sarah Scott Connolly did not like the climate in Florida; and lived in Malden, Allston? Milton? and then settled in Lexington.
• Grandfather Connolly owned more than one house and property during the years, but lost one in the depression 1929+ [Owen Connolly to Scott about his father Joseph..ie the old mortgages and he sold or had forclosure ..thereafter rented his primary family home in Lexington, Ma 110 Bedford Street. (Note some mortgages at the time were like today's 'balloon' mortgages .. a large lump some after an intitial lower pay arrangement. ..record check in Middlesex & Suffolk to do.) ..nb Owen F Connolly born Malden 1921. ... also Mary Alice Scott, in her elder years had moved into a Seniors Old Folks Home (private front room big Edwardian House) in malden, as Scott M Connolly remembered her ..she died there in 1969.
• Scott M Connolly in 1958, toured Continental Can Company [CCC] boxboard corrugated plant in Cambridge, Ma with his father, brother Owen [Chip] and father; then went to Fantasia's [always pronounce fan-tays-yuh] near Fresh Pond center; and a Red Sox ball game at Fenway Park - with good seats either resered grad stand or box. (We were visiting Lexington before leaving for the UK USAF duty staton of Owen Connolly
• Joseph Connolly in 1961 [age 71] is being retired by Continental Can Corporation .. and in a family discussion in Nana's kitchen at his home; states his intention to start his own busines, ie a separate corporation; to continue working ....implying he'd bring his business customers etc with him .... Uncle Charles says "Ok, Pappy .. but we'll manage it ..you won't be in charge of the money." .. Instead of the business Grandfather Joseph Connolly continued with CCC for several more years ..retiring late 60's or early seventies. ..[Scott M Connolly was in the kitchen with his father and uncles and grandfather; while visitng Owen F had been tansferred to Dow AFB USAF-Lt Col , Bangor Maine from UK 1961-1966.
• Uncles Charles and Joseph both served in WWII and were given, or low price sold, home-sites in Lexington, Ma ..in a program by the Town of Lexington; for veterans post war... they built their homes at Hill & Cedar Streets near the Country Club. Owen, also eligible was still in the US Army-Air Force ..and did not participate his (always teased) would have been on a planned and never opend street at the corner -- now conservation land.
  Uncle Charles served in the US Army-Signal or Engineers & staff duty at Dumbarton Oaks Conference-Wash DC; and Uncle Joseph in US Coast Guard.
• College-University ..education of Joseph A Connolly beyond secondary is unknown presumed graduated high school. All of his sons attended college pre-war ..Owen at St Johns Prep-Danvers & Boston University until 1942 (tried to enlist Dec 8 Pearl Harbor mustered in in Feb 1942. Owen did not return after the War. Joseph attended Law School but did not finish ... Charles became an electrical engineer; High Voltage Engneering & Lowell Tech Inst Staff & Falculty -nuclear program. (In the 50's recession 1957 Uncle Charles also owned/leased the Concord Hill Market in Lexington, Ma ..SMC's grandfather Charles A McCormack, then a year retired from the telephone company, also worked there part-time - per Scott M Connolly's memory for 1957)
  Aunt Sarah, about 1936?, per her account, in 1984, an excellent student was accepted and ready to attend New England College of Law [then a law school for women on Beacon Street in Boston - now co-ed] but her father wouldn't pay for it nor permit it --- "A women in law school ... who ever heard of it ... a waste of money! . Aunt Sal went instead to business school for office skills, and commercial art school to become a drafting artist eventually working in the Art Department of the corrugated box-board plant. (ie designing packaging graphics) -- [Sarah died in 1991 - a victim of bone cancer which mestasized from her right elbow .. in her medical history as she told me (she said the doctor asked the same questions) her right elbow used to rest near a radium paint pot used for flouresecnt paint effects.]
• 1969-70 ..Joseph A Connolly and his daughter Sarah declined to renew or pay a more expensive lease for their home at 110 bedford Street (Battle Road is that street's name between Lexington & Bedford for the 1775 battles.) ..they also did't like the offer price for a purchase .. so Sarah Connolly purchased a lot and built a home at 44 Grapevine Avenue; where her parents and she lived until they died. [Joseph Connolly's house was rented for 40 years at the turn of the Great Depression (1929-30)]
• 1970 Death of Joseph A Connolly ..at funeral JA Connolly's pallbearers honary) were his grandsons Funeral Casey's Funeral Home from St Bridgid's to Hillside Cemetery in Lexington.
  As to Grandfather Joe Connoly's finances.. an overheard conservation of SMC's mother and father .."Well I don't understand, why you ..why not Charlie he's the oldest one, ...or Joe ... " Owen responded to Dorothy in the negative both times regarding his brothers. presumambly the matter was a possible trust administration for his mother still living - both daughters of Charles H Scott.
  Owen told his son Scott -that his father had pre-selected his funeral plot; pre-paid and arranged his funeral. On hearing this from me, his sister Sarah said "What? ..he better get his story straight ..I did all that!"
  Sarah and Jospeph Connolly and their unwed daughter Sarah Connolly are buried in Hillside Cemetery, Lexington, Ma. --where as Aunt Sal put it she can look out on Lexington. Charles & Mary Alier Connolly are also buried there.
• Bryan and Winnifred McGowan Connolly had five or more children Joseph was the youngest in the 1880 census return for Portland, Maine -- one month old --- the middle initial "M" is evidently an error for the "A". His oler brothers and sisters from the Census are Sadie, Theresa, John & Patrick.
• Aunt Sarah Connolly mentioned an Uncle Terrence whome she remembered .. that was however on the McGowan side --also 1880 Portland, Maine census.
• McGowan's are Scotch-Irish Ireland born both parents ... Foley is the mother-in-law possibly or relation in the 1880 Portland, Maine Terrence McGowan house ... and possibly SMC's great-great-grandmother. McGowans are also referenced in the 1890 Ireland Parish Census (first one) in Lietrim County, Ireland.
• Cornelius Connolly ..also lived in Portland, maine and was Ireland born ... Whether he is related to Joseph A Connolly is unknown. He is the Connolly mentioned in the 1890 Civil War Veteran's Census .. owned and managed a grocery store and other businesses. He entered the United States circa 1840? ... [more on him coming].
• Connolly Transit to Portland from Ireland ...is unknown ... some passenger entries list a few Connolly's of that period 1848-1880 on the SS "City of Boston" and the SS "New England" including some with children as alin port arrivals for Boston. Some, though Ireland born have sailed to Boston from New Brunswick .. either staged trips and or travellng in search of work or immigration. Noteed for source later but a trip from Ireland at the time cost about 5 1/2 pounds ..and about 3 pounds for children .. usually via British ports with ferry connection from Ireland. Records (NARA) exist for separate Portland passenger entries after 1906.
  By source material about immigration at the time .. frequently agents of employment were ready to offer employment at woolen mills in Saco-Biddeford, Maine (south of Portland) and rail transportation.
  Whether mill work was the lure; or whether a welcome was extended the family of Cornelius Connolly in Portland, Maine to his countrymen & name sake (ie aeas often immigrate together ...) is being checked.
• A John Connolly married an Annie Connolly in Portland, Maine in 1903 relationship being checked may be g-uncle ..and the Connollys of this site lived at 95 Elm Street (City Directory-Portland) and others in check.

  I was unable to find any listings for a Bernard Connolly in this census for the entire state of Maine.
  I found three Terrance McGowens in the same census. All resided in Portland. None of which were born in or near 1835.
