Notes: Bryan Connolly is remembered as immigrating to the United States as a boy with his family; and was born in some part of Lietrim County, Ireland .. north near Sligo Bay. Winifred McGowan was also born in Ireland, and emigrated to the United States. Whether their transit was via Boston, the Maritimes, or directly to Portland, Maine from Ireland is being researched by Scott M Connolly. Bernard Connolly also a wagon-driver (teamster) in the 1858-9 City Directory is of an age for parentage of Bryan and may have introduced the trade to his son. A second coterminous Bernard Connolly, may have beena brother of Bryan ..also lived and raised a Portand, Maine family,, and married a second Winnifred McGowan (1843) with separate children .. but similar names to Bryan Connolly. Bryan has a naturalization record - which as US citizen permiited him city employment. ..Correspondence with a Steven Coleman, produced more family information as to mf GF Joseph A Connolly's sister 'Sadie' (Sarah) who married Cornelius Coleman .. his GGF. * Records Dilemma: Terrence McGowan begins in the 1858-9 City Directory (maybe earlier) and is of an age to parent Winnifred McGowan and also has a Terrence Jr in business. Only other reason for parental assumption until records check is an uncle named Terrence Connolly-son of Winnifred & Bryan Connolly which may have been named for Winnifred's father. Joseph Augustive[sic for 'ine' or 'us'] Connolly, became a paper & corrugated box-board wholesaler; is also listed in his function as an electrical engineer in the 1906 Portland City Directory on Cumberland Avenue [alleged held patents for electro-mechanical processes in paper & box-board machinery & processes ..records check in process] .. and moves to Warren, O. --in the 1907 City Directory of Portland, Maine.
Joseph & Sarah Connolly lost their first son Joseph Jr, who died as an infant (told to Scott M Connolly by Sarah Scott Connolly and likely in Warren, Ohio death records.

As a pronunciation note ...our Connolly family has always pronounced itself ... like the sound: CON-LEE ...2 syllables.. a fashion more favored by the French ..also closer to the McCondley. Our branch has French & Spanish Galacian antecedents .. and the northern branch is closest to 18th and earlier centuries French contacts with Ireland. |
