Amos Connell was born on January 13, 1808 in Maryland. He was but a toddler when he traveled with his parents and brothers to Columbiana Co. Ohio. His father died in 1821, when Amos was the mere age of 12. Amos was raised as a farmer. He likely was a resident of Knox Township by 1827 since his bride's family was from the area. At this point no marriage record has been found between he and Nancy Anna Hestand, commonly known as Anna. Amos and Anna are listed in the 1830 census of Knox Township. The record indicates along with their first two children, there is an aged man (age 60-70) and an aged female (age 70-80) living with them. The census of 1850 shows Amos and Anna along with their children, Benjamin, Isaac, Maria, David, Levi, Elizabeth, Hiram, Amos Jr. and Anne, in Knox Township, District 26. Their two oldest children had set up housekeeping on their own. Tragedy struck the household in 1851 with the loss of their son, Levi. By the time the 1860 census was taken, Amos had been dealt another terrible blow with the death of the mother of his children, Anna. Anna died on May 24, 1860 from an inflammation of the stomach that had lasted eleven weeks. Anna was born January 21, 1810 in Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Isaac And Sarah. Her family had settled in Knox Township. She had been raised in the Dunkard faith. In 1860, Amos and his children, David, Maria, Elizabeth, Hiram, Amos Jr., Annie and Clementine were at the same residence. His property was valued at $5400 and his personal value at $1000. To ease his loneliness he married Sarah H. Quinter on December 24, 1863, performed by Henry Kurtz, DVM. She was the sister of James Quinter, editor of the Gospel Messenger, published by the Church of the Brethren. In 1870 Amos owned 78.75 acres in the southeast corner of Section 22 and 35.43 acres on the west side of Section 26 of Knox Township. In 1870 Amos and Sarah also had Sarah Quinter, age 70, living with them. {James Quinter death} On August 23, 1870, Amos had to deal with another terrible heartache. He lost his daughter, Clementine , to typhoid fever. Three years later, on Feb 25, 1876, he lost another daughter, Elizabeth Helwig. She died of scarlet fever and left a husband, two sons and a baby daughter to grieve for her. By 1880, Amos was living with his son, Amos Jr. and his family. Sarah, Amos' wife, was not living with them. She was living in Stark Co. with her mother, Mary, and nephew, John Q. Vanderslice. Nothing is known at this point what happened between Amos and Sarah. In 1895, the Atlas shows Amos still owns the same land as he did in 1870. He died in June of 1899 in Columbiana Co. OH at the age of 91, from asthma. Amos was an old line Whig, but became a member of the Republican party upon it's organization. He was an avowed abolitionist, and a strong temperance advocate. Amos was the first to advocate that whiskey should be abolished in the harvest fields of his township. He belonged to the Dunkards. Amos is buried in the Reading Cemetery at North Georgetown, OH, next to Anna and his daughters, Clementine and Elizabeth. On his headstone~Connell, Amos D 20 June 1899 Age 91Y 5M 7D.
