Hiram & Nancy Jane Connell
Hiram Harvey Connell was born on August 7, 1844 in N. Georgetown, OH. He served as a member of Co. D. 115 Regiment Ohio Infantry at Winchester, OH (He enlisted Aug. 14, 1862 and discharged due to disability at Camp Chase, OH Jan. 31, 1863). His discharge was due to partial paralysis of the muscle in the left leg and foot and partial surditis resulting from a long and severe attack of typhoid fever while enlisted in the Army.
Hiram married Nancy Jane Williston (daughter of Joseph and Angelina Williston) on July 10, 1864 in Moultry, Knox Twp. Columbiana Co. OH, performed by John Nicholson, Min. (John Nicholson [1824-1904] was a minister for the German Baptist Brethren, starting out in western PA and on to northeastern Ohio in the 1860's)
Nancy Jane Williston was born on April 22, 1845 in Georgetown, OH. She was left an orphan when six years old. Her father and mother died just two weeks apart, and after their death she lived with her grandparents until her marriage. [Her mother died June 5, 1852, age 29y 5m 9d and buried in Reading Cemetery Knox Twp.]
{1850 Knox; Joseph Williston, 31, blacksmith; Angeline Williston, 28; Eliza A. Williston, 7; Nancy J. Williston, 6; Wm. F. Williston, 3; John M. Williston, 1}{1860 census Knox Twp. Columbiana Co; William Sisson, 65; Leadise Sisson, 66; Sarah A. Sisson, 23; Nancy J. Willetson, 15; William Willetson, 14; John Willetson, 12}
Hiram and Nancy commenced married life in Kosciusko county, Indiana, where they lived one year and from there came to Poweshiek county, Iowa in 1867. In 1869 they moved to Lafayette county, Missouri. Hiram and Nancy united with the German Baptist (or Tunker) Church in Sept. 1871 in Jonson Co. MO. In 1875 the grasshoppers ate everything green. They loaded all of their possessions in a covered wagon in late fall of 1875. A stove was in the wagon to keep them warm. Hiram, Nancy and family along with another family by the name of Lytle moved back to Brooklyn, Iowa. Upon arrival, Hiram worked for Holmes Lumber Co. in Brooklyn. Not long afterwards he went to work for Mr. Libby who had a large tract of land SW of Guernsey and involved in farming and stock raising. Mr. Libby had two or three others working for him also. In the 1880 census he is listed as a laborer living in Brooklyn, Poweshiek Co. IA. In 1882 they changed their membership to the Brethren Church of Brooklyn, IA. They were the first 2 of the 6 charter members of this church. In 1883 they moved to Lincoln township where Hiram started a cement block factory. They lived on the English River, north end of the "Ridge". Hiram was a very proud man of his dress and always looked neat. He never followed the dress code of the German Baptist Brethren. He enjoyed fruit trees, especially apple. He also had beautiful chickens with the long tails which they allowed to roost in the trees. Hiram insisted a piece of pie be placed in front of his plate at every meal. He would eat the pie first before his meal. If the pie was not present at the meal he would refuse to eat. While living in Deep River Hiram made a trip to Texas and purchased a ranch in New Mexico. His knowledge of ranching was poor and eventually his sons, Tira and Willie went down and sold the ranch for him. After Nancy's death he would take his meals at his son's (Tira) house.
Nancy was very heavy set woman in her later years. She died on February 4, 1899 at her home two and one half miles west of Guernsey, Iowa of lagrippe. Funeral services were held in the Brethren church of south Brooklyn, by Rev. J.O. Falley, of Chicago. She is buried in Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery, Sec. 8, Row 5; Brooklyn, IA. {Per burial records it is listed as Feb. 6, not Feb. 4.} [Nancy Connell Obituary]
After Nancy's death, his daughter, Minnie and son came to live with Hiram. They moved into Deep River in 1904. She stayed until 1905 when she moved back out to the country. At this time, Hiram's sister, Anne Warner, came to live with him for awhile, but moved back to Muncie, Indiana. He then left for New Mexico.
Hiram
purchased land in New Mexico, staked off and set apart a tract of land
from which to erect a church building. (The
church had not been built at the time of his death).
He was a member of the school board of his district.
He died on April 12, 1908 in Nara Visa, Union Co. NM.
He was buried in Brooklyn
Memorial Cemetery, Brooklyn, IA. Sec.
8, Row 5. {listed in
burial records as 1902, not 1908.}

i. Elza Elona
Bramer (born on March 16, 1894).
While living on the 20 acres Minnie married George Dappen circa 1905. George Dappen was born on May 27, 1874 and committed suicide on June 29, 1910.
6. Tira Harvey Connell (Hiram Harvey-1) was born on January 29, 1872 in Knobnoster, MO.
He married Caroline Jane "Jennie" Smith (daughter of John Smith and Ellen Byers) on December 22, 1898. She was born on November 13, 1875 in Deep River, Poweshiek Co. IA and raised on a farm northwest of Deep River. Jennie attended the Ivy Green or Ridge Schoolhouse.
Her father, John, was born Apr. 23, 1839 at Lancaster, PA. His parents came from Switzerland. Ellen was born Sept. 8, 1850 in Mercer Co. Illinois to parents of Irish descent. John and Ellen were married Feb. 25, 1867. John died June 20, 1919 and Ellen Feb. 15, 1923. They lived on a farm near Deep River for 35 years before moving into Deep River. They had eleven children: Mary, Josephine, Emma, John, Jennie, Bert, Pete, George, Florence, Ethel and Lester. {Family presented Deep River, Iowa 1884-1984; pg 381}
Tira farmed after they were married. Shortly after their marriage, Tira came down with appendicitis in the middle of winter. Jennie rode the horse to Deep River to get the doctor for him since he was very sick. Jennie's mother-in-law would not let her care for him since Nancy didn't think she knew how. Even though Nancy was in Jennie's life only a short time, Jennie did not care much for her mother-in-law. Their first home was in a new corn crib that Jennie described as being fixed up "real homey". They lived near her folks and she helped her family in the fields to earn money for her first sewing machine. Around 1904 Tira built a new house in Deep River next to Hiram. When Hiram was living alone he would take his meals with them. Jennie knew of his desire to have pie on the table at each meal. Rather than get dirty looks from him, she obliged instead. Tira attended the Still College of Osteopathy. January 1st, 1900 he purchased the hardware, furniture and undertaking business in Deep River from George Icenbice. In 1916, Tira and E.T. Whitney built a new brick building on the corner of Main Street and Third Avenue in Deep River. The first floor was furniture and hardware; 2nd floor was the undertaking business and the basement contained the garage for the hearse. James Scovel joined the partnership. Tira had to retire after 40 years in the business due to ill health. {This family is presented in Deep River, Iowa 1884-1984; pg 243; pg 24}
Jennie was an accomplished milliner and seamstress at What Cheer, IA. She started this career as a young girl. She would travel back and forth to her family's farm by train. She never got to finish school as she was needed at home. She joined the Deep River Methodist Church May 17, 1894.

From letter written by
Mary Lou of 1999: Orville
was in the service when Elzie and I went to live with his Dad (Quinter).
We had been married a month but tried to keep it a secret until
school was out. Then we and
his mother went to see Quinter and moved in with him before school was out
so therefore we announced it sooner than expected.
Some thought perhaps it was a "have to" case but it
wasn't. He wanted to clinch it
before I changed my mind. We
stayed about a year and rented a small farm for a year and then to a
larger place near Guernsey and Deep River for about 8 years.
Went to Oklahoma for a year where the weather was not so cold as he
suffered with frost bite in his feet.
Then we moved close to "Tightwad" MO until he died in
early Feb. 1986. In Aug of
1986, I started moving to my original home town (Slater, MO) where I have
an apartment. I buried him in
the City Cemetery. My
grandfather settled 3 1/2 or 4 miles from here in 1885.
Mary Lou taught school for 27 years. |
