JOSEPH CONNELL

 

 Joseph R. Connell was born on February 29, 1828 near North Georgetown, Ohio.  Joseph is listed in the 1850 Knox Twp. Columbiana Co. OH census living with the David and Sarah Shively family.  He was married to Charity Margaret Bowman on October 10, 1852 in Canton, OH. Charity was from Mapleton, Stark Co. Ohio at the time of her marriage. 

Charity Margaret Bowman was born on May 14, 1836 in Ohio.  She was the daughter of Michael and Rachael (Elson) Bowman.  Charity was a sister to Thomas Bowman, father of Grace Bowman, wife of Llewellyn Helwig. 

Joseph and family migrated from Ohio to Kosiusko Co. Indiana on March 29th, 1865 and on to Whitley Co. Indiana on Dec. 6th, 1873.     He is listed in the 1870 Koscuisko Co. IN census Jackson Twp. and is the proprietor of a Sawmill, with real estate value of $3,000 and personal of $3,300.   In the 1880 census he is listed living in Columbia Twp. Whitley Co. IN and farming. 

Joseph and Charity became members of the Dunker (Brethren) Church in 1858.

Joseph died on October 19, 1894.  {Joseph Connell obituary}  The funeral was performed by Rev. Bollinger of the church in Tunker.   He is buried in Eberhard Cemetery, Columbian Twp. Whitley Co. IN.  [A24-28].  In 1900, Leander was the only one living with Charity.  Charity died on July 24, 1912, and buried in Eberhard Cemetery, Columbian Twp. Whitley Co. IN.  [A24-27].

             3                      ii.    Samantha E. Connell  She was born  Aug. 15, 1856 in Stark Co. Ohio and died  on March 22, 1858.  She is buried in Reading Cemetery, Columbiana Co. OH.

            +4                    iii.    Levi Micheal Connell (born on March 29, 1859).

            +5                    iv.    Rachael A. Connell (born in 1862).

              6                     v.    Lemon A. Connell was born on July 2, 1865 in Indiana.  He died on July 8, 1887.  He did not marry.  He is buried in Eberhard Cemetery, Columbian Twp. Whitley Co. IN.  A24-25.

              7                    vi.    Simon A. Connell was born in 1866 in Indiana.

  SECOND GENERATION

 

2.   Henrietta Louisa Connell (Joseph R.-1) was born in May 1854 in Stark Co. Ohio. She moved with her family in 1865 to Indiana.

  She was married to David Anderson Workman on September 8, 1872 in Spring Creek Koscuisko Co. IN.  Book: D:571  

David Anderson Workman was born on September 4, 1848 in Knox Co. OH.  He was the son of Levi and Catherine (Hunter) Workman.  Both born in Maryland, his parents were farmers in Ohio, but moved to Kosciusko Co. Indiana in 1859.  Levi (1811-87) was a devout member of the German Baptist Church.  Several Brethren families from Ohio moved to the Columbia City area.  He served the Spring Creek and Washington congregations.  The Spring Creek congregation was organized in March, 1870 from the Eel River congregation [started 1836 north of N. Manchester]  at the home of Levi Fox.  Levi Workman was the first resident elder 1870-72.  The first meeting house was built in 1871.  It was located north and east of Sidney.  They had 8 children; George, Norman, Isaac, Sanford, Eliza, David A., Lydia & Robinson.  

By 1907, David was the sole survivor of his family.  David remained at home as a helper on the farm until he was 24 years, when he struck out on his own.  He was elected in 1876 of the German Baptist church and ordained by the elders that same year.  His first assignment was the church at Columbia City organized in 1875 from the Blue River congregation.  A meeting house was built just west of town in 1881.  Jeremiah Gump was the elder in charge.   David served there most of his ministry.  He did some evangelistic work in Ohio and other parts of Indiana.  David's poor health often interfered with his ministry.  In the 1880 census he is living in Thorn Creek Twp. Whitley Co. IN and occupation is that of farmer.  David is listed as preacher in the Brethren's Family Almanac for 1895 and 1900 in Columbia City, IN.   Failing health in 1900 forced him to give up ministerial work.  His church in Columbia City dissolved in 1927.  David  owned 40 acres in Thorncreek township.  He was a Republican.  He died on June 5, 1907 in Columbia City, IN and is buried at Stough Cemetery.  {David Workman biography}

In 1920 Henrietta had a nurse living with her in Whitley Co.  Henrietta resided her last few years at the home of Mrs. Walter Pritchard of South Whitley, who was caring for Henrietta.  She died in April of 1940.  Luckenbill's Sons Funeral Home in Columbia City held the funeral services.  Rev.             11                      i.    Charity Catherine Workman was born on July 9, 1873 in Iowa.  She died in 1884 in Indiana.   She is buried at Stough Cemetery, Whitley Co. IN

          +12                     ii.    Minetta Clyde "Nettie" Workman (born on July 17, 1875).

          +13                    iii.    Ira Joseph Workman (born on January 30, 1878).

            14                    iv.    Amos Elson Workman (born on May 23, 1881).  He married Estella A. Schuman.  She was born in 1879 and died in 1961.  He was living in Three Forks, MT in 1940.  He was employed by the railroad.  He died in 1961.  They are both buried at Greenhill Cemetery, Columbia City, Whitley Co. IN.

            15                     v.    George Homer Workman was born on April 1, 1885 in Thorncreek Twp. IN.  In 1907 was with the Pennsylvania Railroad at Fort Wayne. 

          +16                    vi.    Blanche Workman (born on July 30, 1887).

           17                    vii.    Roy Workman  was born Dec. 1890.  He died September 25, 1903 and is buried at Stough Cemetery.

 

4.  Levi Michael Connell (Joseph R.-1) was born on March 29, 1859 in Stark Co. OH.    Levi is listed in his parent's household and attending school in the 1870 Kosciukso Co. IN census.  In the 1880 census he is still living at home in Columbia Twp. Whitley Co. IN and works in a saw mill.  The census of 1900 finds them living in Clear Creek Twp. Huntington Co. IN and Cain C. Weimer, age 23, living with them.  In 1910, Levi, Martha, Edith and nephew Clarence Zeigler were living in Clear Creek Twp. Huntington Co. IN.  In 1920 their nephew Clarence F. Ziegler is still living with Levi and Martha in Huntington Co.  Levi died on July 2, 1949, and is  buried in Clear Creek, Huntington, IN.

  He was married to Martha Elizabeth "Lizzie" Royer on October 28, 1884 in Wabash Co IN.  Martha Elizabeth Royer was born on September 10, 1864.  She died on February 3, 1958 in Huntington, IN. 

Levi Michael Connell and Martha Elizabeth Royer had the following children:

5.  Rachael A. Connell (Joseph R.-1) was born in 1862 in Stark Co. Ohio.

  She  married  William A. Ream Jr. on April 9, 1879 in Whitley Co. IN, performed by David A. Workman.  William A. Ream was born in 1857 in Indiana.  In the 1880 census he is living in Columbia Twp. Whitley Co. IN and farming.  Rachael and William divorced.  She married a 2nd time to Dr.  Christopher Souders, Whitley Co. and a third time to (by 1940) Mahlon L. Butterbaugh, Wabash Co.  In 1904 she was living in Liberty Mills, IN.  Rachael died in 1947 at Liberty Mills, Wabash Co. Indiana.

Rachael A. Connell and William A. Ream had the following children:

 

            20                      i.    Josie Ream was born in 1880 in Indiana.  She married Harold  Ortel.

          +21                     ii.    Idella Ream was born Dec. 13, 1881 at Larwill, Whitley Co. IN. 

            22                    iii.    Louise Ream was born Dec. 29, 1887.   "Lulu" married Othel D. "Bud" Willard Oct. 15, 1910 in Indianapolis, Indiana.  Bud was born Dec. 1889.

 

 

8.  Harriet E. Connell (Joseph R.-1) was born in 1868 in Indiana.  She married Mr. Morris.

  Their  children:

9.  Leander William (Doc) Connell (Joseph R.-1) was born in April 1873 in Indiana.  He died in 1943.

  He  married Bertha PulverThey were divorced.  Leander was living with his mother, Charity, in 1900.  In the 1910 census of Clear Creek Twp. Huntington Co. IN Leander and his two sons, Levi F. and John R. are living with his widowed mother, Charity.  Leander states his marital status to be widowed, not divorced.  In 1920 Leander and his son-in-law, Isiac Bell, were living in Whitley Co. IN.  In 1940 he was living in Noble Co. IN.

Leander William (Doc) and Bertha Connell had the following children:

 

                                            25        i.    Levi F. Connell was born on July 19, 1901 in Indiana.  He died in 1922.  He was buried in Eberhard Cemetery, Columbian Twp. Whitley Co. IN.  A-24-26 On Tombstone:  Pvt. Co. 168 B. No Russ. Exp  He never married.

                                            26       ii.    Carey Connell was born on January 23, 1903.  Graduate of Columbia Community High School, Columbia City, Whitley Co. IN.

                                            27       iii.    Gladys Connell.

                                            28       iv.    John R. Connell was born on March 27, 1905 in Indiana.  He died in November 1938.

10.  Chloa Mae Connell (Joseph R.-1) was born in 1878 in Indiana.  She died in 1966.

  She was married to  Ottis Dow Carter.  He was born in 1867 and died in 1958.  They are both buried in Blue River Cemetery, Whitley Co. IN.  In 1940 she was living in Smith Twp. Whitley Co. Indiana.

 Cloe Mae Connell and Ottis Carter had the following children:

 

            30                      i.    Elizabeth Carter1921 graduate of  Columbia High School, Churubusco, IN. Deceased as of 1970.  She married Mr. Gordon.

            31                     ii.    Mary A. Carter.  She was born Jan. 24, 1905 Smith Twp. Whitley Co. IN.  She married Olen W. Shaffer on July 29, 1923.  She died Feb. 1986.  Burial Christian Chapel Cemetery   {obituary}   

            32                    iii.    Irene Carter  1926 graduate Columbia High School; Churubusco, IN.  She married Mr. Tucker.  

            33                    iv.    Helen L. Carter.  1928 graduate Columbia High School; Churubusco, IN.  She was born Dec. 26, 1906 in Whitley Co.  She married Archie Pounds on Dec. 20, 1930.  Archie died in 1975.  Helen died July 1985.  Burial Eel River Cemetery  {obituary}

            34                    v.    Walter Ottis Carter was born in 1913 and died in 1917.  He is buried at Blue River Cemetery, Whitley Co. IN

THIRD GENERATION

 

12.   Minnettie Clyde "Nettie" Workman (Henrietta Louisa Connell-2, Joseph R.-1)  was born on July 17, 1875 in Indiana.  She died on November 30, 1910.  Nettie died of TB.   She is buried at Stough Cemetery [B-12-26-1]

  She was married to Dr. Lewis A. Kenner on December 30, 1894 at Columbia City, IN.    He was born in 1870 and died in 1956.  Dr. Kenner is buried in Stough Cemetery [B-12-27-1]  

Minetta Clyde "Nettie" Workman and Dr. Lewis D. Kenner had the following children:

 

            36                      i.    Irene Kenner.  She married Mr. McConnell.

 

13.  Ira Joseph Workman (Henrietta Louisa Connell-2, Joseph R.-1)  was born on January 30, 1878 in Thorncreek Twp. IN.  He died on November 30, 1908 in Thorncreek Twp. IN.  Ira died of TB and is buried at Stough Cemetery.

  He was married to Bertha Jackson on December 22, 1903 in Thorncreek Twp. IN. Bertha was born in 1882 and died in 1985 at the age of 103.  She is buried at Stough Cemetery.

They had the following child:

            37                    i.    Donald Workman was born in 1905.        

Bertha and Donald were living in Thorncreek Twp. Whitley Co. in 1910 not far from her mother-in-law, Henrietta.

 

16.  Blanche Workman (Henrietta Louisa Connell-2, Joseph R.-1)  was born on July 30, 1887.  She died on June 7, 1910.  She died of TB.

  She was married to Horton H. Bills on October 4, 1905.   In 1907 and on the 1910 census H.H. and Blanche were living in Troy Township, Whitley Co. Indiana.  In 1920 Horton was living alone in Columbia on E. Ellsworth St.   Horton was born in 1880 and died in 1967.  They are both buried at Stough Cemetery.

 

18.  Edith Miona Connell (Levi Micheal-2, Joseph R.-1)  was born on August 17, 1885 in Whitley Co. IN.  She died on March 15, 1981 in Muncie, IN.  She was a school teacher.

  She was married to William Bina Johnson on June 24, 1915 in Huntington, IN.  William Bina Johnson was born on August 15, 1889 in Scott Co. IN.  He died on January 25, 1957.  He was buried in Scottsburg, IN. 

Edith Miona Connell and William Bina Johnson had the following children:

 

            38                      i.    Mary Elizabeth Johnson was born on May 3, 1916 in Warsaw, IN.  Residing Muncie, IN in 1989.

          +39                     ii.    William B. Johnson (born on June 17, 1919).

            40                    iii.    Betty Ann Johnson.

 

 21.  Idella Ream (Rachael A.-2, Joseph R.-1)  was born Dec. 13, 1881 at Larwill, Whitley, Co. Indiana.  She married Will A. Tucker, July 22, 1902 at Wabash, Indiana.  Will was born Jan. 1881 at Claypool, Koscuisko Co. IN.  Idella died Nov. 18, 1966 at the Alfran Nursing Home in Warsaw, IN.  Will died Feb. 25, 1970 at the Alfran Nursing Home.  They are both buried at Oaklawn Cemetery, North Manchester, Wabash Co. Indiana.    [Will's mother, maiden name, Ganote, died giving birth to him.  His father was William M. Tucker.  He then married the sister of his first wife, Anna Ganote.  William died in 1895 of appendicitis.  Anna Ganote Tucker then married Jacob Warner, divorced husband of Anne Connell, in 1904]

They had the following children:

        41                        i.  William Lowell Tucker was born June 27, 1903 at Silver Lake, Kosciusko Co. IN.  He married Ruby Pearl Ulery June 4, 1925 at Warsaw, Indiana.  Ruby was born Oct. 30, 1904 in Kosciusko Co.  William died Oct. 24, 1981 at Huntington Memorial Hospital, Huntington, IN and buried at Eel River Church of the Brethren Cemetery, Koscuisko Co. IN.

        42                        ii.  Joe Witt Tucker was born June 24, 1910 at Silver Lake, Koscuisko Co. IN.  He married Margaret Elizabeth "Beth" Tucker Aug. 23, 1930.  Joe died Nov. 4, 1989 at Denver, Miami Co. IN and buried at Mount Hope Cemetery, Peru, Miami Co. IN.  He was an Indiana State Policeman.

 

29.  Bernice Connell (Leander William (Doc)-2, Joseph R.-1)

  She  married Isiac  Bell.   In 1920 Isiac and his father-in-law, Leander, were living in Whitley Co. IN.  Bernice Connell and Isiac Bell had the following children:

 

            43                      i.    Frances Bell      Frances was deceased as of 1970.

 


FOURTH GENERATION

    39.  William B. Johnson (Edith Miona Connell-3, Levi Micheal-2, Joseph R.-1) was born on June 17, 1919 in Indianapolis, IN.  He died on January 18, 1989.  Last Residence:  Mountain Lakes, NJ: SS issued; Indiana

  He was married to Marjery Brown in June 1941 in Lincoln, NE.  He was divorced from Marjery Brown in 1955 in Indianapolis, IN. 

Their children:

 

            44                      i.    son Johnson

            45                     ii.    Patricia Ann Johnson was born on June 28, 1944 in Indianapolis, IN.  She died on June 17, 1998 in Boonton, NJ.  Residing Rome, Italy in 1989.
