David Anderson Workman was born on September 4, 1848 in Knox Co. OH. He was the son of Levi and Catherine (Hunter) Workman. Both born in Maryland, his parents were farmers in Ohio, but moved to Kosciusko Co. Indiana in 1859. Levi (1811-87) was a devout member of the German Baptist Church. Several Brethren families from Ohio moved to the Columbia City area. He served the Spring Creek and Washington congregations. The Spring Creek congregation was organized in March, 1870 from the Eel River congregation [started 1836 north of N. Manchester] at the home of Levi Fox. Levi Workman was the first resident elder 1870-72. The first meeting house was built in 1871. It was located north and east of Sidney. They had 8 children; George, Norman, Isaac, Sanford, Eliza, David A., Lydia & Robinson.
By 1907, David was the sole survivor of his family. David remained at home as a helper on the farm until he was 24 years, when he struck out on his own. He was elected in 1876 of the German Baptist church and ordained by the elders that same year. His first assignment was the church at Columbia City organized in 1875 from the Blue River congregation. A meeting house was built just west of town in 1881. Jeremiah Gump was the elder in charge. David served there most of his ministry. He did some evangelistic work in Ohio and other parts of Indiana. David's poor health often interfered with his ministry. In the 1880 census he is living in Thorn Creek Twp. Whitley Co. IN and occupation is that of farmer. David is listed as preacher in the Brethren's Family Almanac for 1895 and 1900 in Columbia City, IN. Failing health in 1900 forced him to give up ministerial work. His church in Columbia City dissolved in 1927. David owned 40 acres in Thorncreek township. He was a Republican. He died on June 5, 1907 in Columbia City, IN and is buried at Stough Cemetery. {David Workman biography}
