AMOS J. CONNELL, Jr.

Amos J Connell Jr. was born on November 30, 1846 in Knox Twp. Columbiana Co. OH.  He died on January 25, 1928 in Knox Twp. Columbiana Co. OH.  He was buried in N. Georgetown Cemetery, Columbiana Co. OH.

Amos enlisted on October 12, 1864 and served with in Co D. of the 25th Ohio Infantry.  He was discharged due to disability at DeCamp Hospital, NY Harbor on Aug. 13, 1865.  His brother, David H., served in the same company with him.

He was married to Anna Rosetta Eckstein (daughter of David Hummel Eckstein and Mary Kutz) on April 14, 1872 in Knox Twp. Columbiana Co. OH.  D.H. Eckstein  owned 60 acres in Section 24 of Knox Twp. (on the north edge of N. Georgetown) in 1870 and still owns the land in 1895. Anna Rosetta Eckstein was born on June 8, 1849 in Wellsville, Columbiana Co. OH.  She died on April 14, 1927 in Wellsville, Columbiana Co. OH.  She was buried in N. Georgetown Cemetery, Columbiana Co. OH.  Anna was the youngest of 8 children at the time of the 1850 census.

By 1870, all of Amos' brothers had left for either Indiana or Iowa.  His sister Maria had also gone to Iowa and Sarah on to Indiana.  Elizabeth was married and living in Columbiana County.  Sister Anne, was still at home, as was Amos.  In 1872 both Amos and Anne married.  Anne went to Indiana.  {Per letter from Amos Sr. to Ben:  Amos was living in Georgetown with wife and babe in 1873.} Not long after marriage his sister, Elizabeth died, and her son, Llewellyn, went to live in the parental home.  It would appear that Amos Jr. and family stayed on the homestead and farmed except for the early part of their marriage.  [See Amos Connell 1873 letter]  Amos Sr. owned 75 acres in Section 22 and 35 acres in Section 26 of Knox Township; located half way between North Georgetown and Reading.  Amos Jr. would have been the only Connell left to stay from this family in  Columbiana County.

In the 1880 census Knox Twp. Columbiana Co. OH it lists his father, Amos and nephew Llellyn Helwig living with them.  His occupation is farming.  Laborer James Hicks, age 20, was also residing with them.

It appears Amos was in disapproval by his church in 1891.  {Per church records of the Reading Church of the Brethren Columbiana Co. OH:  Nov. 14, 1891.....The committee report to wait on those who belong to secret orders as called.  They reported that 3 Brethren belong to the G.A.R., namely Ephriam B. Kelly, Henry Hahn, and Amos J. Connell.  On motion it was agreed to retain the same committee (this happened to another Brethren-they confronted him and disowned him) whose duty it will be to notify them to appear at net council and answer to the charge against them.  No entry reporting the outcome of the council.} He is not buried in the Reading Cemetery which is Brethren.
