 Dr. Aaron and Amelia Connell Family

 

1. Dr. Aaron A. Connell was born in March 1807 in Frederick, MD.  Aaron is listed in the 1830 Columbiana Co. OH census living in New Lisbon.  There are 3 males under 5 yrs. of age listed (Alfred, Benjamin, and Dewitt Clinton); 2 males between 20-30 (Aaron & possibly one of the brothers living with them {David????}; and one female between age 20-30 (Amelia, his wife).  He was a physician.  In 1845 Aaron was practicing in Salineville, Washington Twp Columbiana Co. OH.  It was stated that he died in 1850.  However on pg 50 of the 1879 History of Columbiana Co. it states that Aaron Connell attended a pioneer reunion.  In the 1860 census he shows up at Elkart Co., Elkhart Town, IN as a physician with a personal property worth $100.  According to the article below he is back in Columbiana County in 1871 living at Summitville.

From the Souvenir Edition 1803 Sesquicentennial 1953 Lisbon, Ohio, Vol II:  FAMILY REUNION:  Children and grandhchildren of Dr. Aaron Connell met at his residence in Summitville on the 27th having been separated from more than 20 years.  The number present was 34, being father and mother, 6 sons, 2 daughters, 1 son-in-law, 5 daughter-in-laws and 18 grandchildren.  The next morning they all took the cars for Wellsville where they spent a day and night with the oldest son, Alfred.  Dr. Connell can boast of what few men can, namely that he furnished 7 sons for the war of the Great Rebellion, of whom 2 were killed.  [New Lisbon Journal Monday Oct. 9, 1871]

 

  Aaron married  "Amelia"Mildred Davidson on February 23, 1826 in Columbiana Co. OH,  by Joshua Chandler JP.  "Amelia"Mildred Davidson  was born on May 3, 1808. 

Dr. Aaron A. Connell and "Amelia"Mildred Davidson had the following children:

            +3                      i.    David F. Connell was born in 1829.  He died on May 15, 1864 in Basagga, Georgia.  David was a member of the 19th Infantry Battery.  He was killed at the Battle of Basagga (entry on tombstone).  He was buried in Bethesda Church Cemetery, Franklin Twp. Columbiana Co. OH.  Row 21, 1/r

              5                    iv.    Frank Connell was born in 1834.  He died in infancy

              7                    vi.    John Connell was born in 1836.  John went south in 1854.  Per 1880 letter from John Connell he went to Mobile, ALA-was a cripple.

              9                  viii.    Samuel Linday Connell was born on January 21, 1843.  He died on September 2, 1862.  He was buried in Bethesda Church Cemetery, Franklin Twp. Columbiana Co. OH.  Row 21 1/r Samuel's headstone states Sargeant of Co. I 48th Ind Regt., killed at the Battle of Juka, Mississippi.  Co. I 48th OVI flag on grave. [He was living with his father and step-mother in 1860 at Elkhart Twp Elkhart Co. IN.]

Aaron  married a second time to Sarah McClellan. She was born in 1814 in Pennsylvania.   Sarah died at age 61.


  SECOND GENERATION

 

  2.  Benjamin David Connell (Dr. Aaron A.-1) was born on August 13, 1828.

  He was married to Margaret McGinley on May 3, 1855 in Columbiana Co. OH, by Wm. Young Brown.  "married May 3 by Rev. WYB.  BDC of Norwalk, OH and Miss Margaret McGenley, New Lisbon". 

 Benjamin David Connell and Margaret McGinley had the following children:

4. DeWitt Clinton Connell (Dr. Aaron A.-1)  was born on September 13, 1830.  DeWitt enlisted on Aug. 12, 1862 as Quarter Master Sargent in Co. S of the 102nd Ohio Infantry Regiment.  He was promoted to 2nd Lt. on Feb. 25, 1863 and transferred on Feb. 25, 1863 to Co. I.  Promoted to 1st Lt. and transferred back to Co. S Apr. 17, 1863.  In 1880 census located in Hancock Co. Findlay Twp. OH.

  DeWitt Clinton Connell had the following children:

6. Alfred Connell (Dr. Aaron A.-1)  died on December 1, 1894 in Wellsville, OH.  Cause of death was listed as heart trouble.  He was born bet 1828/3 Dec 1836 in New London, OH.  Alfred was a butcher.  He lived at Wellsville, OH.  In the 1860 census, Alfred and his family were living in Yellow Creek Twp. Columbiana Co. where he listed himself as a farmer with personal property worth $500.  In the 1880 census he is living in Wellsville, Columbiana Co. OH and his occupation was butcher.  CONFLICTING INFORMATION on census of 1880.{It shows: Alfred, age 52; wife Sarah, age 53; dau. Amanda, age 22; dau. Catherine M., age 19; John Risher (other) age 26}

  He was married to Mary Bowman on July 16, 1850, by J. Campbell.  "Alfred Connell and Mary Bowman, both of Wellsville, married 16 July 1850".  Mary Bowman was born in 1829 in Ohio. 

There is a Mary Ann Connell buried at Springhill Cemetery Wellsville, Yellow Creek Twp. Columbiana Co. with entry as follows:  born New Lisbon Ohio Jan. 7, 1829, died May 10, 1864; last residence, Wellsville; removed from Old Cemetery.  Also an Alfred Connell, born Wellsville Aug. 3, 1863; burial date of Feb. 28, 1866; removed from Old Cemetery

Alfred Connell and Mary Bowman had the following children:

8.   William James Connell (Dr. Aaron A.-1) was born on April 11, 1838.  He died in 1910.  Per 1880 letter from John Connell:  Living in Fulton, OH.

  He  married Mary Lois

            28                     ii.    Ed. E. Connell was born on April 12, 1866.

10.   George M. Connell (Dr. Aaron A.-1) was born on April 2, 1845 in Ohio.  He died in 1908.  He was buried in Lisbon Cemetery, Lisbon, OH.  Row 11 1/r. GAR marker  In 1860 he was living with his father and step-mother in Elkhart Twp. Elkhart Co. IN.  He is listed in the Veteran Grave Registration as serving in the Army.  Per his son's biography he was widely known as the author of the play, "The Fall of Atlanta." In the 1880 census he is listed living in Center Twp. Columbiana Co. OH and his occupation as Painter.

  He was married to Mary Louisa (Lou M.) Chandler on November 10, 1870 in Columbiana Co. OH, by Albert Baker VDM.  "married 16th Nov. at residence of N.A. Haldeman near Hanover Oh by Rev. Albert Baker.  G.W. Connell and Miss Lou M. Chandler, both of this county." Mary Louisa(Lou M.) Chandler was born in 1849 in Ohio.  She died in 1899.  She was buried in Lisbon Cemetery, Lisbon, OH. 

George M. Connell and Mary Louisa(Lou M.) Chandler had the following children:

            32                     ii.    Eleanor M. Connell was born in 1880 in Ohio.  Eleanor never married.  Headstone placed in Lisbon Cemetery Row 11 1/r, but no death date as of 1988.

11. Marie E. Connell (Dr. Aaron A.-1)  was born on December 15, 1847.  In 1860 she was living with her father and step-mother in Elkhart Twp. Elkhart Co. IN.  Per 1880 letter from John Connell:  living in Salineville, Ohio.  In 1910 she was residing in Youngstown, OH.

  She was married to Dr. John A. Lindsay.  Dr. John A. Lindsay died in December 1908.  He was a prominent member of the medical profession in Columbiana Co.  He served during the Civil War in the 19th Kentucky Regiment as sergeant.  He then located at Salineville and practiced medicine till his death.  He was a Democrat and belonged to the United Presbyterian Church.  [See biography of Dr. William A. Marie E. Connell and Dr. John A. Lindsay had the following children:

12.  Franklin Roach Connell (Dr. Aaron A.-1) was born on September 15, 1848 in Ohio.  A Franklin Connell of Salineville enlisted in the 12th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry Sept. 18, 1863 and mustered out July 14, 1865.  In the 1880 census Frank is listed living in Wellsville, Columbiana Co. OH and his occupation that of R.R. Conductor.

  He was married to Lucinda H. Emmons in Cleveland, OH.   Lucinda H. Emmons was born in 1850 in Ohio. 

Franklin Roach Connell and Lucinda H. Emmons had the following children:

 

            41                      i.    Ada F. Connell was born in 1871 in Ohio.  Ada never married.

            42                     ii.    Dr. Albert E. Connell was born after 1880.

 

13.  Mary Anna Connell (Dr. Aaron A.-1)  was born on May 7, 1854 in Goshen, IN.  In 1860 she was living with her father and step-mother in Elkhart Twp. Elkhart Co. IN.

  She was married to John C. McIntosh on November 17, 1876.   John C. McIntosh was born in 1849 in Ohio.  In the 1880 census he is farming and living in Brush Creek Twp. Jefferson Co. OH.  Mary Anna Connell and John C. McIntosh had the following children:

 

            43                      i.    Edwin H. McIntosh was born in 1879 in Ohio.

  THIRD GENERATION

 

  22.  Sarah Euphemia Connell was born in 1850 in Ohio.  She died on March 2, 1881.

        She married Henry Edward Finch on April 5, 1871 in Columbiana County Ohio.  After Sarah's death Henry remarried to Elizabeth Gould.

        They had the following children:

            52.        i.  Charles Oliver Finch was born in 1872.  He died on December 17, 1891.

           53.        ii.  Oceola Maxwell Finch was born in 1874.  He married Ellen Delilah Roberton.

            54.        iii.  Lillian Gertrude Finch was born in 1877.  She died on December 8, 1886.

            55.         iv.  Effie Pearl Finch was born in 1880.  She died on January 28, 1881.

 

  29.  Clare Vernon Connell (William James-2, Dr. Aaron A.-1)  was born on January 16, 1868.  He died on January 26, 1941.

  He was married to Nona A. Martin on May 12, 1896 in Adams Co. IN.  Vol 1, Bk G, pg 195.

 

30.  Elenor M. Connell (William James-2, Dr. Aaron A.-1) 

  She  married  a Martin on May 9, 1898.

  Elenor M. Connell and unknown Martin had the following children:

            57                     ii.    Fred W. Connell Martin (born on April 7, 1909).  He had 3 children.

31.  Charles Chandler Connell (George M.-2, Dr. Aaron A.-1) was born on September 27, 1871 in Lisbon, OH.  He died in 1944.  He was buried in Lisbon Cemetery, Lisbon, OH.  American Legion marker on grave.  Row 11 1/r.  Charles received his early education in the public schools of Lisbon, then Ohio State University until 1892 and graduated from the Cincinnati Law School in 1894.  He has since been engaged in the practice of law in Lisbon since graduation (1926).  During World War 1 he held the rank of major and was awarded the Medal of Honor by the French War Department for his work done as chief of the medical personnel of the American Red Cross.  He served as a member of the Senate for four years.  He is vice president of the Firestone Bank of Lisbon (1926).  Charles is affiliated with the Masonic Lodge, the Ohio Society of New York and the Leister Club of Dublin, Ireland.  As of 1926 they had no children.  He was one of the authors of An Historical Sketch of The Old Village of New Lisbon, Ohio; 1903.

  He was married to Evelyn G. Gaskill (daughter of Charles Gaskill and Kitty Harvey) on June 27, 1901.  Evelyn G. Gaskill was born in 1880.  She died in 1972.  She was buried in Lisbon Cemetery, Lisbon, OH.  Row 11 1/r.

CHARLES CHANDLER CONNELL, of Lisbon, is a representative member of the bar of Columbiana County.  He was born at Lisbon, Sept. 27, 1871, and is the son of George and Louisa (Chandler) Connell; his father George M. Connell, deceased, was widely known as the author of the play, "The Fall of Atlanta."

C.C. Connell received his early education in the public schools of Lisbon, in Ohio State University until 1892 and graduated from the Cincinnati Law School in 1894.  he has ever since been engaged in the practice of law at Lisbon.

During the World War Mr. Connell held the rank of major and was awarded the Medal of Honor by the French War Department for his work done as chief of the medical personnel of the American Red Cross.  he served as a member of the Senate for four years, as U.S. referee in Bankruptcy for seven years, and he also served as city solicitor for 12 years.  Mr. Connell is vice president of the Firestone Bank of Lisbon.

On June 27, 1901, Mr. Connell was united in marriage with Miss Evelyn Gaskill, of Lisbon, the daughter of Charles and Kitty (Harvey) Gaskill.  They have no children.

Mr. Connell is affiliated with the Masonic Lodge, the Ohio Society of New York, and the Leister Club of Dublin, Ireland.                                                                   {History of Columbiana County; Barth 1926; pg 769-70}

 

33.  Margaret Connell (George M.-2, Dr. Aaron A.-1)  was born in July 1894.

  She was married to J. A. Genereux.

  Margaret Connell and J. A. Genereux had the following children:

34.  Dr. William A. Lindsay  (Marie E. Connell-2, Dr. Aaron A.-1) was born on January 31, 1874 in Salineville, Columbiana Co. OH.  His literary training was at Franklin College and his medical degree from Ohio Medical University graduating in 1898.  He started practice in Salineville.  In 1905 he located at Amsterdam, Carroll Co. OH.

  He was married to M. Luella McKenzie (daughter of James McKenzie) in Salineville, Columbiana Co. OH.

William A. Lindsay, M.D., physician and surgeon at Amsterdam, Ohio, owning and conducting the drug store adjoining his residence, occupies a leading position in the town's affairs and is well known professionally all through this section.  He was born at Salineville, Columbiana Co., Ohio, January 31, 1874 and is a son of Dr. John A. and Marie E. (Connell) Lindsay.

The late Dr. J.A. Lindsay was a prominent member of the medical profession in Columbiana County,  During the Civil War he served as a soldier, enlisting as a private and later was made a sergeant in the 19th Regiment Kentucky Infantry.  After the war was over he located at Salineville, Ohio, where he engaged in the practice of medicine until the close of his life, his death occurring in December, 1908.  his widow resides at Youngstown, Ohio.  In politics he was identified with the Democratic party, and in religion he belonged to the United Presbyterian Church.

W.A. Lindsay complete his literary training at Franklin College and then naturally entered upon the study of medicine, his father and both grandfathers, Dr. John Lindsay and Dr. Aaron Connell, having been more or less eminent in the profession.  He received his degree from the Ohio Medical University, where he was graduated in the class of 1898, and immediately located for practice at Salineville, where he continued for seven years.  In July, 1905, Dr. Lindsay came to Amsterdam and has built up a large and substantial practice here, and owning his own drug store, has the advantage of knowing just precisely how his prescriptions are filled.  He is the U.S. examiner for the Government Marine Recruiting Station at this point.

Dr. Lindsay was married at Salineville to Miss M. Luella McKenzie, a daughter of James McKenzie, of that place, and they have one son, James A. who is a student in the Amsterdam schools.  Dr. and Mrs. Lindsay are members of the Presbyterian Church.  In his political views he is a Democrat.  He keeps fully abreast with the times in his profession and is a member of the Jefferson County and the American Medical Associations.                                                                                                {20th Century History of Steubenville & Jefferson County Ohio; Doyle; 1910}

56.  Lois C. Martin (Elenor M. Connell-3, William James-2, Dr. Aaron A.-1)  was born on August 25, 1901.  She died in October 1984.  Last residence:  Little Rock, Pulaski, AR; SS issued AR

  She was married to J. R. Burnside on December 18, 1926.
