Snyder, Isaac Funk, S.P. Miller and George W. Hopwood.

In 1849, in what was formerly the town of Dresden (Deep River), the German Baptist Brethren or Dunkards, organized a church.  It was among the oldest church organizations in Poweshiek County.  The Church of the Brethren at Brooklyn was granted in 1866 thru the Deep River congregation of which it was a part of.  They held services in school houses and barns.  John Wise was the first preacher, but Jacob Snyder is inseparable from the affairs of the early Brooklyn Church.  He had been called to the ministry in his former home county of Fayette, PA.  No regular preacher was maintained in the early day.  Most of the men farmed and Mr. Snyder often preached on Sundays.  In 1883 a building was built on Jacob Snyder's land.)   Jacob is listed in the 1895 (pg 45) and 1900 (pg 36) of the Brethren's Family Almanac.

Practices of the early Dunkers were:  They used no buttons, but all hook and eye fasteners.  Women wore prayer caps.  They celebrated a "love feast" once a year which consisted of a pot luck and then a ceremonial washing of the feet.
