SAMUEL SMITH HARRIS, bishop of the Protestant Episcopal church, was
born September 14, 1841, near Prattville, Autauga County, died in
London, England, August 21, 1888 and was buried in Detroit, Mich.;
son of Buckner and Sarah Marian (McKeithen) Harris of Robinson
Springs and brother of Joseph Archibald Harris. He graduated from the
University of Alabama, A.B., 1859; received the honorary degree of
D.D., William and Mary college, 1874, and LL. D., University of
Alabama, 1897. After completing his college education, he at once
began the study of law; was admitted to the bar at the age of
nineteen,1860, by a special act of legislature; a few months later
entered the Confederate Army as a member of the staff of Gen. Bragg,
and immediately after the war removed to New York City where he began
the practice of law. He came to Mobile, 1867, and offered himself as
a minister to the bishop; returned to New YOrk City where he pursued
his studies for the ministry, at the same time practicing law. He was
ordained a deacon, 1869, at Montgomery and held the pastorate of St.
John's church, until he was made a priest, June 30, 1869, when he
removed to Columbus, Ga., and later to Trinity church, New Orleans,
La,; received a call from St. James' church, Chicago, 1875; and was
chosen bishop of the diocese of Michigan, 1879, and consecrated,
September 17, of the same year. He died in London while attending the
convention of bishops of the British, American and Colonial churches.

Mary Gindrat, daughter of Albert James and Sarah Smith (Harris)
Pickett of of Autaugaville. Children: 1, Eliza Pickett, d. in
infancy; 2. Sallie Pickett, m. Charles Mills Gayley, the latter the
author of many well known books; 3. Corinne Pickett, d. in infancy;
4. William Pickett, civil engineer, Detroit, m. Sarah Edwards McGraw;
5. Samuel Smith, lawyer, Detroit; 6. Joseph Buckner, deceased; 7.
Julian Hartwell. Last residence: Detroit, Michigan.
