Biography
NORFLEET HARRIS, planter, was
born in Hale, then Marengo County,
December 5, 1848; son of Richard
Norfleet and Amanda (Banks) Harris,
and brother of John James
Harris. He attended the University of
Alabama, but was forced to
leave this institution on account of the
burning of its buildings by
the Federal forces. He finished his
edcuation at the University
of Virginia, receiving the degree of LL.
B., 1869; was admitted to
the bar the fall previous to his
graduation, 1868, having studied
under his brother-in-law, Judge H.
M. Somerville. He began
the practice of his profession in St. Louis,
Mo., but soon returned to
Alabama and located at Tuscaloosa. In 1873
he retired to his country
home near Tuscaloosa and in 1878 he removed
to his plantation at Laneville,
Hale County, where he became a
planter and merchant.
He served in the house of representative 1882-
83; senate 1890-92, and was
United States consul at Leeds, England,
1893-98. Married: to Bettie
Cooper Blocker. Residence: Laneville.
