CARPENTER, probably a sister of Simon CARPENTER who lived in the north part of the town of Killingly, Connecticut. He was living in Johnson, RI in 1774. His family then consisted of one adult male, one adult female, and three males under the age of 16. (Rhode Island census of 1774) The
late Henry HAMMOND of Danielson, Connecticut, who was
perhaps the best authority on this family, said that it was
the tradition that Stephan's father was Benjamin Hammond and that
he did all the interior work on Rev. Stephan

THE HAMMOND FAMILY He enlisted in the Rhode Island Troops in 1777 at the age of 13 years and served as a private for six months. In the spring of 1778 he enlisted as a marine on a guard ship under the command of Capt. Jerah CLARK and served nine months. In 1779 he again enlisted under Capt. or Col. TALBOT and served as a private for five months. In 1780 he enlisted as a marine on the ship "Washington" under command of Capt. James Monroe and served four months. In March 1781 he again enlisted as a marine on the ship "Conqueror" and served three months. Stephan
is said to have had a large family,
about whom nothing has been learned. Stephan died in Fairfield,
Herkimer
County, New York. He was on the pension roll in 1840.
ELEAZER WESCOTT HAMMOND, son of Stephan Hammond I and a Miss CARPENTER, was born 12 May 1772, in Johnson, Rhode Island. He married 24 Mar 1805, Ann M. BROWN. She was born 6 November 1783, daughter of David and Elizabeth H. BROWN of Pomfret, Connecticut. His parents died when he was quite young and he was brought up by a relative, Simon CARPENTER, in Killingly, Connecticut. Eleazer was a printer by trade. Cranston, Rhode Island, the son of Simon Hammond I. He married

BABCOCK, of Rhode Island, daughter of Rev. Arnold

Hannah died in German Flats, Herkimer County, New York. Simon then
married
Harriet FRAZEE, born 1 July 1795, daughter of

FRAZEE of Elizabethtown, New Jersey. She
died 7 August 1877 in Centerville, South Dakota. 13 THE HAMMOND FAMILY Simon moved from Rhode Island to German Flats in New York with his father and lived there the greater part of his life. was born 12 Feb 1806 at Pomfret, CT. He married, 28
June
1829, Grace Ainsworth WALKER. She was born 15 May 1807
in
Woodstock, Connecticut, daughter of Uriah and Eunice
(CHAMBERLAIN)
WALKER. Stephan was a black- smith by trade and
a local preacher in the M.E. church for more than forty years.
Stephan
died 8 June 1884 in Danielson, Ct. Grace died 14 December 1888.

June 1834 d. 12 Nov 1836 MARY TILLINGHAST HAMMOND, daughter of Eleazer W. HAMMOND and Ann M. Brown was born 18 April 1808 in Pomfret, Ct. At an early age she joined the Methodist church in West Thompson, and when the Methodist church was formed in Danielson, she brought her letter to it. She moved to Providence for about eight years. She returned to Pomfret and gave her church letter to the Congregational church. She remained in that church until her death 7 July 1901. She was totally blind for the last eleven years. HON. HENRY HAMMOND, son of Eleazer Hammond and Ann M. BROWN was born 15 October 1813 in Pomfret, Connecticut. He married Emma DORRANCE, 8 April 1840, daughter of Samuel and Amy DORRANCE. She was born 4 April 1813 in Brooklyn, Ct. Henry was engaged in the mechanical business until 1851. In 1847, Mr. Hammond was selected as a delegate to the anti-slavery convention from Connecticut to the convention in New York. Hon. Henry Hammond was a member of the House of Representatives in 1854 and again in 1865. He served in the senate in 1881 and 1882 from the 16th district. Henry was, for several years, active trustee in the Windham County Savings Bank of Killingly. He was director of the Danielson Cotton Company. He was also president of the First National Bank of Killingly. Hon. Henry Hammond spent most of his life in the cause of Anti-Slavery. He died 2 April 1890 and Emma died 14 November 1895, both in Danielson, CT. 1. Charles

Kingsley Hammond b. 17 Jan 1847 DR. EZRA HAMMOND, son of Eleazer W. Hammond was born 3 June 1819 in Pomfret, Ct. He married Mrs. Amanda (FISKE) NICHOLS, daughter of Amariah FISKE of Hampton, CT. Dr. Hammond moved to Waterford, Dakota County, Minnesota, where he resided for about thirty years. After his wife's death he went back to Pomfret, Ct., and in 1895 went to live with his niece, Miss Harriet J. Hammond at Danielson, Ct. Ezra and Amanda had no issue. Mrs. Hammond had several children by her first husband. Ezra died 27 April 1897 in Danielson, Ct. His wife Amanda died 8 March 1878 in Waterford, Minnesota. LEWIS KINGSLEY HAMMOND, son of Eleazer W. Hammond was born 29 April 1822 in Pomfret, Ct. He married first Phebe WARREN. Second to Elizabeth CARPENTER of Providence, Rhode Island. He had no issue. Lewis lived for many years in Sterling, Ct. OLIVER
HAMMOND, son of Simon Hammond II and Hannah BABCOCK

born 21 June 1815 in German Flats, New York. He married

1815, daughter of Hulda (BATES) THOMPSON of Tyrone, New York. Oliver
moved
from German Flats, New York to Bradford, Penn-
In 1854
he joined a wagon train and headed west. The train gathered
at Olean, New York, where they started on their long journey.
Most
of the people in the train were
Hammond
families. Part of the train came into Michigan and the other
group
went on to Wisconsin and Minnesota. There were thirty
prairie
schooners in the train. Oliver Hammond settled in
Laingsburg,
Michigan. As he was a manufacturer of boots,
shoes,
and harnesses he started a shop there. 18 He tanned
skins and made them into leather from which he made his products.
The shoes he made were all of leather and they lasted a
long
time, not like the shoes of today, which are half made
of
paper to hold them together long enough to be Oliver later sold his farm and bought a piece of land in St. Louis, Michigan, where the sugar factory was later built. When they built the sugar factory the company bought 30 acres from him at the price of $39,000.00. After his wife's death, Oliver went to Tennessee to live with his daughter Emeline. Rhoda died 28 July 1892 in St. Louis, Michigan. Oliver died 31 August 1899 in Dechard, Tennessee. 1. Emeline
