                     THE HAMMOND FAMILY

                                  Part 3                                              Page 11-20

Stephan HAMMOND 1, Born about 1720, whose parentage cannot be certain was a  resident of Johnson, Rhode Island, where he died in 1780.   He is said to have married __________?  CARPENTER, probably a sister of Simon CARPENTER  who lived in the north part of the town of Killingly,  Connecticut. He was living in Johnson, RI in 1774. His family then consisted of one adult male, one adult female, and  three males under the age of 16. (Rhode Island census of 1774)

The  late  Henry HAMMOND  of  Danielson, Connecticut, who was perhaps the best  authority on this family, said that it was the tradition that Stephan's father was Benjamin Hammond and that he  did  all  the  interior work on Rev. Stephan Genoe's
first  church  in  Johnson,  Rhode  Island.  It  seems  quite probable that he was a descendant of William HAMMOND and Mary (WHIPPLE) HAMMOND.

1. Simon Hammond I* b. July 17582. Stephan Hammond II b. Feb 1764, 3. Eleazer Wescott Hammond b. 12 May 1772.

                                   SIMON HAMMOND I

There is no proof that the Simon Hammond I (below) was related to the Hammonds
above this point.

Simon HAMMOND I, was  born  in  July, 1758 in Johnson, Rhode Island. He moved, at an early age, to German Flats, New York, near Little Falls, where he resided to an extreme old age.  He died  28  January 1848, in German Flats, Herkimer County, NY.
His wife's name and dates not known.

1. Simon Hammond II* b. 10 Jan 1779,  2. Cynthia Hammond  3. Rufus Hammond

                                  STEPHAN HAMMOND II

Stephan HAMMOND II,  was  born 1764 in Johnson, Rhode Island.  He  married  Amy  HUNT, 17  January  1782, of Cranston, Rhode Island.  Amy  was  from  Warwick,  Rhode  Island. Stephan was married when he was under the age of eighteen.

Dan Goetz' Hammond line from Stephan Hammond II

Hi Richard

I recently started researching my Hammond genealogy and I am trying to determine the father of Stephen Hammond, Revolutionary Soldier born 1764 in Cranston, Rhode Island, died in New York.

Many online trees give his father as Stephen Sr., who died in 1780. The HAMMOND GENEALOGY says the only children with records or history was Eleazor, Stephen and Simon.

The Stephen Hammond, Rev soldier had brothers James and Pardon. Stephen is in Stephen Town, Albany, New York in 1790 with his brother Pardon.  There is a Stephen Hammond in Providence, Rhode Island also in 1790.

It appears Simon Hammond may have went to German Flats, New York and have led some researchers to believe the Stephen there was his brother. It is early in my research but I suspect Simon and this Stephen were cousins and not brothers.

A will in Amsterdam, New York probated 1808 of William Hammond names his sons; Stephen, Pardon and James, daughters  Sally Simmons, Nancy Potter and Freelove Hammond. [Extract]

Sally Hammond  married Jeremiah Simmons/Seamans [my direct line] and resided in Amsterdam, New York, Source; SEAMANS FAMILY IN AMERICA - 1933 - Jeremiah Simmons is on same page with Pardon and Stephen in the 1790 census of Stephen Town, Albany.

James Hammond, brother of Stephen made affidavit from Amsterdam in 1833 and living next door in 1830 was Stephen Potter [husband of Nancy Hammond, dau of William]

I am waiting for a copy of William Hammond's will but so far my research leads me to believe the Stephen Hammond born Cranston, RI in 1764 was not the son of Stephen and brother of Simon and Eleazor but son of William died 1808 in Amsterdam, New York, with brothers Pardon and James.

Would you have anything to help resolve these inconsistencies or know of anyone who might be able to?  I would appreciate any help at all.

Thanks
Joanne    JoannePezzullo "at" aol.com

He married Rhoda THOMPSON  25 December  1835.  She  was born 19 February 1815, daughter of Hulda (BATES) THOMPSON of Tyrone, New York. Oliver moved from  German Flats,  New York to Bradford, Penn-

In 1854  he joined  a  wagon train and headed west. The train gathered at Olean, New York, where they started on their long journey.  Most  of  the  people  in the  train  were  Hammond families. Part of the train came into  Michigan and the other group went on to  Wisconsin and  Minnesota. There were thirty prairie  schooners  in  the  train. Oliver Hammond settled in Laingsburg,  Michigan.  As  he  was  a manufacturer of boots, shoes, and harnesses he started a shop there.

He tanned skins and made them into leather from which he made his products.  The shoes he made were all of leather and they lasted  a  long  time, not like the shoes of today, which are half  made  of  paper to hold them together long enough to be
sold over  the  counter.  He  later sold his shoe and harness shop and  bought  a  farm three and a half miles northwest of Ovid, Michigan on Elsie road.

Oliver  later sold his farm and bought a piece of land in St. Louis, Michigan,  where  the  sugar  factory was later built. When they built the sugar factory the company bought 30 acres from him at the price of $39,000.00.

After his wife's death, Oliver went to Tennessee to live with his  daughter  Emeline. Rhoda died 28 July 1892 in St. Louis, Michigan.  Oliver died 31 August 1899 in Dechard, Tennessee.
